King Black Dragon Best in Slot Gear & Strategy Guide

AKA - KBD

The King Black Dragon is a Black Dragon boss found within the King Black Dragon’s lair in the wilderness. Whilst the entrance to the lair is found within the wilderness, the lair itself is not considered wilderness and you are therefor safe from other players within it.

As the King Black Dragon is a Black Dragon, killing him will count towards a Black Dragon slayer task.

The King Black Dragon was the first boss monster to be added to the game, way back in Runescape classic. It was often killed by players who were hunting the famed Dragon Med Helm, however, players nowadays often kill the KBD for the chance at the KBD Heads, which allow you to re-colour the slayer helm to black, and also the Prince Black Dragon pet.

Players often use either Ranged or Melee at the KBD as viable methods to efficiently kill him.

KBD - Basic Melee Guide

The King Black Dragon uses multiple different Dragon Breath special attacks with differing effects. A Dragonfire Shield or Anti-dragon Shield will reduce the damage of these special attacks by 75% and is highly recommended. You can reduce the damage of these attacks even further by drinking an Antifire potion. This will reduce the damage dealt by the Dragon Breath special attacks to be no more than 10.

If you combine the above with the Protection from Melee prayer to protect you from 100% of the KBD’s melee attacks, you will only take a small amount of damage from the KBD’s Dragon Breath attacks.

Poison Breath (Green)

This attack will poison you, which is why you should bring either a Super Antipoison potion or wear a Serpentine Helmet (off-task)

Shock Breath (Blue)

This attack will slowly lower all of your stats. This is not much of a problem with melee as your stats will be restored and raised when using your Super Combat potion.

Freeze Breath (White)

This attack will freeze you in place for 10 seconds, making you unable to move or attack. You should use this opportunity while frozen to eat up and drink any potions you may need to drink.

Equipment / Inventory Notes:

If you don’t mind risking the extra item on your way to the KBD lair, you could bring a Special Attack weapon – even a cheap one like a DDS if you wished.

KBD - Basic Ranged Guide

The King Black Dragon uses multiple different Dragon Breath special attacks with differing effects. A Dragonfire Wardor Anti-dragon Shield will reduce the damage of these special attacks by 75% and is highly recommended. You can reduce the damage of these attacks even further by drinking an Antifire potion. This will reduce the damage dealt by the Dragon Breath special attacks to be no more than 10.

While ranging, you can avoid 100% of his melee attacks by staying at a distance, but this means he will be using more special attacks and you’ll therefore be taking more damage than a player using melee. There is no need for you to use any protection prayers while ranging.

Poison Breath (Green)

This attack will poison you, which is why you should bring either a Super Antipoison potion or wear a Serpentine Helmet (off-task)

Shock Breath (Blue)

This attack will slowly lower all of your stats. This is not much of a problem with range if you’re using Bastion Potions. However, if you’re using regular Ranging potions you may want to bring a Super Restore potion to bring your defence back up.

Freeze Breath (White)

This attack will freeze you in place for 10 seconds, making you unable to move or attack. You should use this opportunity while frozen to eat up and drink any potions you may need to drink.

King Black Dragon — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Best in Slot gear for King Black Dragon in OSRS?

The Best in Slot setup for King Black Dragon depends on your combat style and budget. The gear grid above shows the top-ranked items for each equipment slot — sorted by the stats that matter most for this fight (accuracy vs. max hit vs. defence). For most players, near-BiS gear (one tier below the absolute top) clears king black dragon comfortably without needing a max-stake bank.

Look at the inventory recommendation below the gear list for prayer potions, food, and any boss-specific items you should bring.

What stats do I need to fight King Black Dragon?

Check the "Requirements" line at the top of this guide — it lists the recommended combat stats and quest prerequisites. As a general rule, you can engage king black dragon at the listed minimums, but expect slower kills and more food consumption. Higher combat stats (especially Strength, Ranged Strength, or Magic Damage % depending on the style) translate directly to faster, safer kills.

If your stats are below the recommended minimums, consider training at easier slayer tasks first — efficiency goes up dramatically once you can actually use BiS gear effectively.

Do I need full BiS gear to kill King Black Dragon?

No. Full BiS makes kills faster but is rarely required. Most players clear king black dragon with mid-to-high tier gear — the difference between a Bandos chest and Torva, or a Trident and Shadow, is typically 5-15% DPS. That matters at endgame raid speeds; it doesn't matter for slayer or casual PvM.

Use the BiS gear above as your aspirational target, but start with what you have. The boss tells you what works through your kill speed and food usage.

How do I get to King Black Dragon?

Travel to King Black Dragon varies by boss. Check the OSRS Wiki for the exact teleport or walking path — most bosses have a fairy ring code, a slayer master teleport, or a quest reward teleport that works. Bring a way back to the bank between trips: skull-tricks, Achievement Diary teleports, or a House teleport are common.

If you're fighting King Black Dragon on a slayer task, your slayer master's teleport will usually drop you right at the lair entrance.

What are the best drops from King Black Dragon?

The "Notable Drops" section above lists the top items from King Black Dragon — the ones most players are actually grinding for. Most boss tables include a unique (the most valuable rare drop), a handful of mid-tier uniques, and a steady stream of GP-value drops like alchables, runes, and crafting materials.

Drop rates and exact loot tables come from the OSRS game data; specific roll mechanics (1/X, scales with kill count, etc.) vary boss-to-boss — check the OSRS Wiki for full drop tables and rate-of-return calculations.

How do I afford King Black Dragon gear?

Most BiS items for king black dragon come from raids (Tombs of Amascut, Theatre of Blood, Chambers of Xeric) or specific bosses you'd need to grind separately. The Grand Exchange shortcuts the grind for tradeable items: BiS gear costs anywhere from a few million to a few billion GP per piece.

If you want to skip the gold-grind and buy gear directly, Probemas sells OSRS gold safely — pick it up at the GE the same hour and you're back killing king black dragon with proper gear.

How much DPS will my setup do against King Black Dragon?

Use our OSRS DPS Calculator to find out. Load your stats from the hiscores, equip your gear, pick King Black Dragon as the target, and the calculator shows your max hit, hit chance, and DPS across melee, ranged, and magic so you can see which style wins for this fight.
