OSRS Melee Gear Progression

Ghrazi rapier — a reliable stab best-in-slot.

Melee runs on two stats: your Attack (the chance your hit lands, and which weapons you can wield) and your Strength (the bonus added to every hit — your damage). But melee has a twist that ranged and magic don’t: every weapon attacks in one of three styles — stab, slash, or crush — and every monster is weaker to one of them. The most common melee mistake is bringing a high-damage weapon of the wrong style.

So there is no single best melee weapon — you bring the one whose style matches the target. The Scythe of vitur (slash) shreds large monsters; Osmumten’s fang (stab) beats high-defence single targets; a crush weapon like the Inquisitor’s mace wins where stab and slash bounce off.

Every figure below is sourced from our drift-checked item database and spot-verified against the OSRS Wiki. For exact numbers on your own setup, load the OSRS DPS Calculator — pick a target, equip your gear, and see your real max hit and damage-per-second.

New to melee? Start here. Buy a Dragon scimitar (needs level 60 Attack — a fast slash weapon) or an Abyssal whip (level 70) — either carries you for ages. Add a Dragon defender, an Amulet of fury, Barrows gloves, Dragon boots, and the best Bandos or Obsidian armour you can afford. Everything below is the path from there.
BiS = best in slot (the dream gear). Stab / slash / crush = the three melee attack styles — match them to the monster’s weakness. Spec = a weapon’s special attack, a burst move that drains an energy bar.

How Melee Gear Works

You upgrade melee gear to push two stats — and to carry the right style:

  • Strength bonus — a flat bonus added to your max hit. It comes from your accessories (Amulet of rancour, Ferocious gloves, Ultor ring, Primordial boots) and the top armour sets. This is what scales your damage on every hit.
  • Attack bonus — raises your accuracy in a specific style (stab, slash or crush). A weapon with huge stab attack is wasted on a monster that resists stab, so the style matters as much as the number.

The short version: stack Strength bonus from your accessories and the best armour set you can wear, then bring the weapon whose style matches the target — plus a special-attack weapon for burst damage or to drain a boss’s Defence.

Melee Gear Essentials

These four accessories carry every melee setup — they stack pure Strength bonus and work in almost every fight. Get them first.

Amulet of rancour - OSRS item icon

Amulet of Rancour

The best melee amulet — +12 Strength (from Araxxor). The Amulet of torture (+10) is the cheaper, near-identical standard.

Ferocious gloves - OSRS item icon

Ferocious Gloves

+14 Strength — the best melee gloves by a wide margin. A drop from Cerberus.

Primordial boots - OSRS item icon

Primordial Boots

+5 Strength — best-in-slot melee boots. Made from a Primordial crystal dropped by Cerberus.

Avernic defender - OSRS item icon

Avernic Defender

+8 Strength and the best off-hand defence in the game — the top defender. From the Theatre of Blood.

Melee Weapons — Progression

OSRS character wielding the Scythe of Vitur
Scythe of Vitur — hits up to three times on large monsters.

You pick the weapon whose attack style matches the target. Requirements shown are the Attack level to wield.

WeaponAttack reqStyleBest for
Scythe of Vitur BiS80 (90 Str)SlashHits up to three times per swing on large monsters — the second and third hits deal 50% and 25% damage. Devastating on large monsters (2×2 or bigger) weak to slash — many raid bosses and big multi-tile targets; wasteful on single-tile targets, where one big hit wins instead.
Osmumten’s Fang BiS82StabRolls accuracy twice and narrows its damage to 15–85% of max, so it lands far more often on high-Defence single targets (Tombs of Amascut, Slayer bosses). Its Eviscerate special adds +50% accuracy. From the Tombs of Amascut.
Ghrazi Rapier High80StabThe reliable stab BiS — no gimmick, just top stab attack and Strength. The general-purpose pick for any stab-weak target. Theatre of Blood drop.
Blade of Saeldor High80SlashThe slash twin of the rapier — same Strength, never degrades, no special needed. From the Gauntlet (crystal).
Soulreaper Axe High80 (80 Str)SlashA high-Strength two-hander that builds soul stacks as you fight (at a small Hitpoints cost), each one adding damage — strong sustained DPS on a single target. From Desert Treasure II.
Inquisitor’s Mace High80CrushThe crush BiS. With the full Inquisitor’s armour set it gains +2.5% crush accuracy and damage (+7.5% with the mace equipped) — the pick for crush-weak targets where stab and slash resist.
Dragon Hunter Lance High78Stab+20% accuracy and damage vs draconic targets (dragons, wyverns, the Great Olm) — the melee best-in-slot for Vorkath and dragon Slayer tasks. One-handed, so it keeps your Avernic defender.
Abyssal Whip Budget70SlashThe classic budget slash workhorse — fast, cheap, and carries you for ages. From Abyssal demons.
Dragon Scimitar Budget60SlashThe early-game pick — the fastest affordable slash weapon. From Monkey Madness.

Carry a spec weapon too. A melee bosser’s inventory is a main weapon plus a special-attack weapon, for one of two jobs. Burst damage: the Voidwaker (50%-energy spec) deals a guaranteed hit of 50–150% of your max that ignores Defence, and Dragon claws land four rapid hits. Defence reduction: the Dragon warhammer lowers a target’s current Defence by 30% per hit and the Elder maul by 35% — softening a boss for your whole team. The Bandos godsword doubles accuracy and drains stats. Pair any spec with a Lightbearer ring to regenerate energy twice as fast.

Match the Weakness — The Real Damage

This is the one rule that beats raw stats. Every monster is weaker to one melee style — stab, slash or crush — and matching your weapon to that weakness is usually a bigger DPS gain than a small stat upgrade. RuneLite’s monster info shows each target’s weakness.

StyleBest weaponsUse it on
StabOsmumten’s fang, Ghrazi rapier, Dragon hunter lanceThe Corporeal Beast (its slash and crush defence are huge — bring a stab corpbane weapon like a Zamorakian spear or the Fang) and draconic bosses (the Dragon hunter lance, +20%).
SlashScythe of vitur, Blade of saeldor, Abyssal whipDemons (use a demonbane like Arclight or Emberlight), Cerberus, and large slash-weak monsters (the Scythe’s extra hits land here).
CrushInquisitor’s mace, Elder maulHeavily armoured targets that resist stab and slash — and for landing a Defence-draining spec (Dragon warhammer, Elder maul) before a kill.

Build a small kit. A serious melee account keeps one stab weapon, one slash weapon, and one crush weapon — plus a Defence-draining spec like the Dragon warhammer — and swaps to whatever the fight is weak to. On undead targets, a Salve amulet (e) gives +20% melee accuracy and Strength (it replaces, and beats, a Slayer helmet’s bonus — the two don’t stack). On a Slayer task, the Imbued Slayer helm gives +16.67% melee instead.

Ironman Melee Gear Progression

Ironmen earn every piece, so melee progression follows the content you can do. The order that matters:

  • Early — a Dragon scimitar (Monkey Madness) in the best Obsidian or Rune you can grind, with a Fighter torso from Barbarian Assault and a Dragon defender from the Warriors’ Guild.
  • Abyssal whip — from Abyssal demons (85 Slayer). The first big slash spike. Fire cape — the Fight Caves.
  • Bandos armour — General Graardor in the God Wars Dungeon. A Dragon warhammer (Lizardman shamans) gives you a Defence-draining spec.
  • Raid weapons — Osmumten’s fang from the Tombs of Amascut, the Ghrazi rapier and Avernic defender from the Theatre of Blood, and the Blade of saeldor from the Gauntlet.
  • Torva armour — Nex. Ferocious gloves and Primordial boots — Cerberus. Infernal cape — the Inferno. The endgame chase.

Ironman priority: a whip from Slayer first, then God Wars for Bandos and a Dragon warhammer, then raids for the Fang, Rapier and Avernic defender — and finally Nex for Torva.

F2P Melee Gear

Free-to-play melee is rune metal and a scimitar. No abyssal whip, no Bandos, no Strength gloves, boots or ring — so the setup is full rune armour, the best scimitar you can wield, and a Strength amulet to push your max hit.

SlotF2P bestNotes
WeaponRune scimitar (+45 slash, +44 str, 40 Attack)The best F2P DPS weapon — fast (4-tick). A Rune 2h or longsword hits harder but far slower, so the scimitar wins for training and most fights.
AmuletAmulet of strength (+10 str)F2P best for max hit; switch to an Amulet of power if you want some accuracy and defence too.
HeadRune full helm (+32 slash def)
BodyRune platebody (+80 slash def)A rune chainbody gives more crush defence if that’s the fight.
LegsRune platelegs or plateskirt (+49 def)
ShieldRune kiteshield (+48 slash def)The Dragon defender is members — the kiteshield is the F2P off-hand.
HandsGreen d’hide vambraces / leather glovesF2P has no metal gloves — the Recipe for Disaster gloves need a members quest.
FeetFancy / Fighting boots (free)No metal boots in F2P (rune boots are members). Fancy or Fighting boots are a free reward from the Stronghold of Security; only Decorative boots (gold) from Castle Wars give any Strength (+1).
CapeAny team / coloured capeDefence only — no F2P Strength cape.

From level 40 Attack, the rune scimitar is the F2P damage standard — pair it with an Amulet of strength and full rune for the best free-to-play melee setup. The Strength-bonus slots (gloves, boots, ring, cape) don’t exist in F2P, so leave them defensive or cosmetic.

Can’t afford full rune yet? Adamant armour is the tier below and costs a fraction of rune for only slightly less defence — wear that (or steel while you’re really broke) and upgrade piece by piece. A rune scimitar plus full adamant is a cheap, complete F2P setup; check the live GE Price Tracker for current prices.

Melee Gear FAQ

What is the best melee weapon in OSRS?

It depends on the target and its weakness. The Scythe of vitur (80 Attack) is best on large slash-weak monsters; Osmumten’s fang (82) is best on high-Defence single targets; the Ghrazi rapier and Blade of saeldor are the general-purpose stab and slash picks; and the Inquisitor’s mace is best on crush-weak targets. Most bossers also carry a special-attack weapon like the Voidwaker or Dragon warhammer.

What is the best melee armour in OSRS?

Torva armour (80 Defence) is best in slot, followed by Bandos (65). Finish the setup with an Amulet of rancour or torture, Ferocious gloves, Primordial boots, an Ultor ring, an Avernic defender and an Infernal cape. Inquisitor’s armour is best specifically when using crush attacks.

What do stab, slash and crush mean in OSRS?

They are the three melee attack styles. Every monster is weaker to one of them, and matching your weapon’s style to the target’s weakness is often a bigger damage gain than a small stat upgrade. RuneLite shows each monster’s weakness, so you bring the weapon that exploits it.

What is the best budget melee setup in OSRS?

A Dragon scimitar or Abyssal whip, a Bandos chestplate or Fighter torso with Obsidian legs, an Amulet of fury, Barrows gloves, Dragon boots and a Dragon defender clears most of the game’s content for a small fraction of best-in-slot cost.

What is the best F2P melee gear in OSRS?

A Rune scimitar (40 Attack) is the best free-to-play melee weapon — abyssal whips and Bandos are members. Pair it with full rune armour (platebody, platelegs, full helm, kiteshield) and an Amulet of strength for the highest max hit. F2P has no Strength gloves, boots, ring or cape.
