Cerb - Melee DPS Guide

Cerberus is a very dangerous boss fight which will require some practice before mastering. Cerberus has a few different special attacks all of which can be deadly if not dealt with correctly. For the majority of the fight, you should use the protect from magic prayer and attack with melee.

Special Attacks

Triple Attack – Cerberus will always start out the fight the same way. she will fire three orbs at the player, the first of which dealing magic damage, followed by ranged damage, followed by melee damage. If you switch your protection prayers with the correct timings, you can nullify all the damage from this attack.

Summoned Souls – Once Cerberus is below 400 health, she will occasionally howl ‘Aaarrrooooooo’ – summoning three summoned souls too appear from behind the archaic skull. Each of these souls attacks with a different attack style. Blue is magic, red is melee, and green is ranged. The order in which they appear and attack is random each time, however, if you pay special attention you can determine which order they will attack. The western-most soul will always attack first, followed by the soul in the middle, followed by the eastern-most soul. Therefore by looking at their colours, you can figure out which order you will need to switch your protection prayers. If you miss a prayer, you will take 30 damage. If you use the correct prayer, you will consume 30 prayer points (reduced to 15 prayer points while wielding a Spectral Spirit Shield).

As this attack is either going to do a lot of damage or drain a lot of prayer points – it’s important to keep both your health and prayer points high during the entirety of this fight.

AoE Attack – Once Cerberus is below 200 health she will throw out three puddles of lava – one of these puddles will always land on the square the player is standing on so it’s important to move. If you stand on one of the puddles, you will take 10 – 15 damage per game tick. If you stand within one square of these puddles, you will take half that damage – so it is important to avoid the puddles at all costs.

If you can master all of the above special attacks,  Cerberus can be an extremely rewarding and fun boss to fight.

Cerberus Guide

Cerberus is a level 318 hellhound boss who resides in Cerberus' Lair, deep beneath the Taverley Dungeon in the cave entrance in the north-east part of the hellhound area, found beyond the poisonous spiders. She is a three-headed gigantic hound and the Guardian of the River of Souls, and is classified as a demon. Defeating Cerberus requires a Slayer level of 91, along with an active task of hellhounds or Cerberus herself.

Cerberus has 600 Hitpoints and attacks with all three combat styles — Stab (melee), Ranged, and Magic — each with a max hit of 23 on a six-tick attack speed. She is the only monster in the game to drop the eternal, pegasian, and primordial crystals, which upgrade infinity, ranger, and dragon boots into eternal, pegasian, and primordial boots respectively. She also drops the smouldering stone, the jar of souls, and the hellpuppy pet. With a low Defence level of 100 and a 40% elemental weakness to water spells, she is a fast, profitable, and beginner-friendly boss for players who have just hit the Slayer requirement.

Requirements & where to fight

Cerberus is locked behind 91 Slayer, and you can only damage her while on a Slayer task of hellhounds or Cerberus herself. The 91 requirement can be reached with a boost: wild pies raise your Slayer level, but you must have a minimum of 86 Slayer base, and the boost must be maintained at or above 91 for the entire kill. Tasks are assigned by Vannaka, Chaeldar, Konar, Nieve, and Duradel.

She lives in Cerberus' Lair, found in Taverley Dungeon at the hellhounds' area — there is a small opening players crawl into to enter the lair. There are three different rooms inside the lair in which she can be found. Because the run from a bank to her lair is long, the Wiki strongly recommends not attempting the boss until you have 65 or higher Agility: the pipe shortcut needs 70 Agility (boostable to 65) and the wall trap shortcut needs 80 (boostable to 75), both of which avoid needing a dusty key.

  • If entering from the pipe, have Protect from Magic active before going in to avoid getting scorched by a blue dragon.
  • If entering from the wall spikes, attack a skeleton and let it hit you once before jumping, as the occasional poison spider wanders the area.
  • Effective routes to Taverley Dungeon include teleporting to Falador and using the wall shortcut near the West bank, or moving your Player-owned house to Taverley and running south from the house portal.
  • Key master teleports, which Cerberus herself drops, can be used to teleport directly to the Key Master outside her lair.

Recommended stats & gear

The Wiki's suggested skills for a comfortable Cerberus trip are 85+ Attack, 85+ Strength, 85+ Defence, 75+ Ranged, and 70+ Prayer (for Piety; 74+ for Rigour). If you want to use thralls, you also need 76 Magic and completion of A Kingdom Divided (80 Magic for Death Charge).

Melee is the meta. As a hellhound-type boss, Cerberus has very high offensive stats (220) but a low Defence level of 100, and she is weak to melee — primarily crush-based attacks. She is slightly resistant to stab and resistant to slash, magic, and ranged. As a demonic creature she is also weak to demonbane weapons such as Arclight and Emberlight, which should be set to stab unless you are using oathplate armour (which gives strong slash accuracy). Despite her ranged resistance, ranged weapons can still be extremely effective — in particular the twisted bow — and a scorching bow offers similar DPS to non-max melee setups.

For the actual item slots, describing every option here would just duplicate the work — plug your bank into our Boss Gear Finder above to get the best loadout you can actually afford. In broad strokes, the families that matter are: a slayer helmet (i) or black mask (i) for the on-task damage bonus, a high-tier strength amulet, a crush or demonbane main weapon (scythe of vitur, Emberlight, Arclight, Inquisitor's mace, Osmumten's fang, or abyssal bludgeon), a Bandos-tier or better body and legs, an avernic defender, and — importantly — a spectral spirit shield to swap in during the souls attack. A special-attack weapon such as the Elder maul, Bandos godsword, or Dragon claws helps lower her Defence or burst her down.

Inventory & supplies

Cerberus trips are short, so your inventory is mostly food and prayer restores. The Wiki's recommended melee inventory is built around these supplies:

  • 1–2 Divine super combat potions for boosted melee stats.
  • 6–9 Prayer potions or Super restores — the exact number depends on whether you own a spectral spirit shield (fewer if you do, because it halves the souls' prayer drain).
  • A special-attack weapon (e.g. Elder maul or Dragon claws).
  • A spectral spirit shield — and if you are using a two-handed weapon like the scythe of vitur or abyssal bludgeon, also bring a one-handed weapon (such as Arclight) to attack with while the shield is equipped during the souls attack.
  • A rune pouch and book of the dead for casting resurrection (thrall) spells on the Arceuus spellbook.
  • Runes for Ward of Arceuus to cut prayer drain (stacks with the spectral spirit shield), and optionally death/soul runes for Death Charge for more frequent specials.
  • Wrath runes for Demonic Offering, which can restore prayer once per kill mid-souls-attack to save prayer doses (less helpful if you already run a spectral shield).
  • House teleport tablets (or Construction cape / Max cape / Desert amulet 4) to bank and reset.
  • Sharks or higher-tier food for the remaining slots — Bluefin are a good alternative since their extra prayer restore is useful given the boss's heavy prayer usage.

Ranged setups are similar but swap the combat potion for a Divine bastion or ranging potion and the melee specs for a Zaryte crossbow or Saradomin godsword.

Fight mechanics

Cerberus is unattackable when she first spawns — she only has an examine option while sitting. Once she detects you in the arena she stands up and becomes attackable. If no players are present in her chamber she returns to the centre and restores all of her lost Hitpoints, so never leave a half-finished kill. Her special attacks trigger on a fixed attack counter, layered on top of her three standard attacks (melee bite, a translucent spiky ranged ball, and a smooth black magic ball, all max 23). The general default is to keep Protect from Magic active throughout.

Triple (combo) attack

The triple attack is performed as her first attack and then repeated after every ten normal attacks. She fires magic, then ranged, then melee, two ticks apart. The crucial detail: the melee hit lands regardless of distance and is not a dodgeable projectile. Each part can deal up to 23 and is fully blocked by the correct protection prayer. Because Protect from Magic is your default, you mainly need to be aware that this melee component will still tag you even if you are ranging from across the room.

Summoned souls (ghosts)

This attack only begins once Cerberus drops below 400 Hitpoints, then fires every seventh attack. It is signalled by her howling "Aaarrrooooooo" overhead, summoning three Summoned Souls that cannot be harmed. Each soul uses a different style and they attack once each, in sequence, from west to east: red is melee, blue is magic, green is ranged. The order of the three is randomised, so you must read the colours.

  • If you do not protect against a hit, it deals 30 damage (an elysian spirit shield reduces this to 22).
  • If you do protect against it, it drains 30 Prayer points instead. A spectral spirit shield halves this to 15, Ward of Arceuus reduces it by 33% to 20, and both together cut it to just 10 per soul.
  • You only need the correct prayer active when each attack is launched — even if that drains you to 0. A good technique is to flick to the next prayer in the sequence the moment the current attacking ghost drains your prayer.

The souls are the most resource-intensive part of the fight, causing heavy unavoidable damage or drain, which is exactly why a spectral spirit shield is so valued here.

Lava pools

Lava pools only occur once Cerberus is below 200 Hitpoints, then every fifth attack, signalled by her howling "Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr". Three pools deploy — one on your current tile, two at random parts of the room — each occupying a single tile. Standing on a tile as it spawns deals 10 damage; standing on an active pool deals 15 damage every two ticks. Antifire (dragonfire) protection reduces the prolonged damage from staying near a pool, though it does not stop the initial hit.

If you are outside melee range you have enough time to react to the pool animation and step away. In melee range there is not enough time to dodge unless you are already running as the attack begins — a major reason ranged users find Cerberus more forgiving, since the targeted pool is not applied on the same tick the mechanic starts.

Fire wall & auto-heal

A fire wall spawns between the entrance and the boss to stop you killing her from afar; it does not despawn unless you die fighting her, and crossing it deals 5 damage each pass. Separately, remember the auto-heal: if no player is in the chamber she returns to idle and fully restores her health, so don't run out and reset mid-kill unless you intend to. Once she is defeated, Cerberus respawns in five seconds.

Strategy / kill rotation

The core plan is simple: keep Protect from Magic on, deal damage as fast as possible, and count her attacks so the specials never surprise you. Her special attacks follow a fixed priority when they overlap: Triple attack > Summoned Souls > Lava pools. There is also a 10% chance she skips a souls or lava special and does a normal attack instead, so don't panic if a expected special doesn't appear.

The most common cause of death is the souls-and-lava combo around attacks 14 and 15 — souls first, then lava — where players get disoriented dodging pools and eating, and forget to pray the souls. Treat the souls as your highest priority every time. For maximum kills per hour the Wiki recommends being on the Arceuus spellbook for thralls and bringing a book of the dead. It is recommended to start each kill standing directly underneath her.

A useful DPS trick: Cerberus attacks on a six-tick (3.6s) cycle while a scythe attacks on a five-tick (3.0s) cycle, so by ducking under her for a few ticks then coming out to attack, you can land two hits for every one of hers — with high hits this can even kill her before she summons souls. Two lower-resource alternatives exist for ironmen or those without a spectral shield:

  • No Ghosts strategy: hit her to just above 400 HP and wait until the 14th attack (about 56 seconds), which guarantees no ghosts appear until the 28th attack, cutting prayer-potion use to roughly two doses per kill. Use defensive gear (e.g. Dinh's bulwark) and step back while waiting; if you accidentally drop her below 400 before attack 14, reset the fight by walking back over the entrance flames.
  • Dharok's 'red-click' strategy: drop your HP to 1 (rock cake or locator orb) for maximum Dharok's damage, attack, walk under the boss, and red-click the exit portcullis so she never moves or retaliates — a max hit of 104 is possible. Kill times are long, and it is not recommended for Hardcore Ironmen since one mistake can be fatal.

Notable drops

Cerberus is famous as the only source of three boot-upgrade crystals. Each of the primordial crystal, pegasian crystal, and eternal crystal drops at 1/520, as does the smouldering stone (used to make infernal tools). The jar of souls drops at 1/2000, and her pet, the hellpuppy, at 1/3000. Her unique drop table is hit at a 1 in 130 chance per kill. She also guarantees infernal ashes on every kill and has a strong supply of useful secondary drops like super restores, runes, coal, and noted herbs and seeds. The full drop table, with current values, is shown above.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting the souls during the lava combo. Around attacks 14–15 the souls and lava land back-to-back; players dodging pools forget to pray the souls and take 90 unblocked damage. Souls are always the priority.
  • Ignoring the triple attack's melee hit. The melee part of the combo lands regardless of distance, so ranged players who assume they're safe still get tagged for up to 23.
  • Standing in lava in melee range. In melee you can't dodge a pool unless you're already moving as the attack begins — pre-empt it by counting attacks.
  • Crossing the fire wall. It deals 5 damage each pass and won't despawn until you die, so avoid pacing back and forth through it.
  • Leaving the chamber mid-kill. If no player is present she fully restores her Hitpoints, wasting all your progress.
  • Going without prayer-drain mitigation. Without a spectral spirit shield or Ward of Arceuus, the souls drain 30 prayer each and chew through your potions fast.

Cerberus Guide — FAQ

What Slayer level do I need to kill Cerberus?

You need 91 Slayer, plus an active task of hellhounds or Cerberus, to deal any damage. You can boost into the requirement with wild pies, but only if your base Slayer is at least 86, and the boost must stay at or above 91 for the whole kill.

What is Cerberus weak to?

She is weak to melee, primarily crush attacks, and has a low Defence level of 100. She also has a 40% elemental weakness to water spells and is weak to demonbane weapons like Arclight and Emberlight. She is resistant to slash, magic, and ranged and slightly resistant to stab — though strong ranged weapons like the twisted bow still work very well.

How much damage can Cerberus hit?

Her standard melee, ranged, and magic attacks each have a max hit of 23. Her summoned souls hit for 30 if unprotected, and her lava pools deal 10 on spawn or 15 every two ticks if you stand in one. Crossing the entrance fire wall costs 5 per pass.

Why do I need a spectral spirit shield?

When Cerberus drops below 400 HP she summons souls that drain 30 prayer per protected hit. A spectral spirit shield halves that to 15, and combined with Ward of Arceuus it falls to just 10 per soul — dramatically extending your trips and protecting profit. It's swapped in only while the souls are attacking.

What are the best drops from Cerberus?

Her headline uniques are the primordial, pegasian, and eternal crystals and the smouldering stone, all at 1/520, which upgrade boots and dragon tools. The jar of souls (1/2000) and the hellpuppy pet (1/3000) are the prized collectibles. She is the only monster in the game that drops the three boot crystals.

Do I have to leave when she heals back up?

Cerberus only restores her full Hitpoints if no player is in her chamber. As long as you stay and keep fighting she won't heal, so avoid running out mid-kill. After you defeat her she respawns in five seconds.
