OSRS Ranged Gear Progression
Ranged is the most flexible combat style in Old School RuneScape, and two stats drive it: your Ranged attack (the chance your shot lands) and your Ranged strength (the bonus added to every hit). Unlike magic, most of your Ranged strength comes from your ammunition — the arrow, bolt or dart you load matters as much as the bow.
The weapon you bring depends entirely on the target. Crossbows fire bolts whose special effects (ruby and diamond bolts) do the heavy lifting; bows like the Twisted bow and Bow of faerdhinen scale off their own mechanics; the Toxic blowpipe is the fastest weapon in the game. There is no single “best” ranged weapon — there’s a best weapon for the fight.

New to ranged? Start here. Buy a Rune crossbow (61 Ranged) and load Ruby and Diamond bolts (e) — that combo carries you through most of the game. Wear Black d’hide armour, an Amulet of glory, and an Ava’s device so you don’t lose ammo. Everything below is the path from there.
BiS = best in slot (the dream gear). (e) = enchanted bolts, which have a chance to trigger a powerful special effect. Multi-combat = a zone where several monsters can be hit — and hit you — at once.
How Ranged Gear Works
You upgrade ranged gear to push two stats, in this order of impact:
- Ranged strength — a flat bonus added to your max hit. The biggest single source is your ammunition (Dragon arrows, Dragon darts, enchanted bolts), then accessories like the Necklace of anguish and the Masori set. This is what scales your damage on every shot.
- Ranged attack bonus — raises your accuracy alongside your Ranged level. Matters most against high-defence targets; on low-defence Slayer monsters you’re already near-cap, so strength wins.
The short version: the right ammo for the fight, then a Necklace of anguish, the Masori set, and Zaryte vambraces for Ranged strength — and pick the weapon that matches the target (bolts for bosses, blowpipe for speed, Twisted bow for high-magic targets).

Four pieces carry every ranged setup. Get these first — they give the most damage per GP and work in almost every fight.
Necklace of Anguish
The best ranged amulet — +5 Ranged strength and +15 Ranged attack. One of the biggest single accessory upgrades you can buy.
Zaryte Vambraces
+2 Ranged strength and the best Ranged attack in the gloves slot. A direct drop from Nex.
Ava’s Assembler
Best-in-slot cape that collects your ammo and adds Ranged bonuses — so you never run out of arrows mid-fight.
Rune Crossbow
The budget workhorse (61 Ranged). Loaded with Ruby and Diamond bolts (e), it clears content far above its price.

Carry a spec weapon too. A bosser’s ranged inventory is a main weapon plus a special-attack weapon for burst damage. The Webweaver bow (50%-energy spec, four hits at up to 40% of your max hit each) is the top ranged spec; the Zaryte crossbow spec is the other big one. Pair either with a Lightbearer ring — it regenerates your special-attack bar twice as fast, so you can spec far more often.

Ranged armour gives Ranged attack (accuracy) and, on the top set, a little Ranged strength. Requirements shown are the Ranged level to wear (most also need Defence).

Ammo & Bolts — The Real Damage
Ranged strength lives mostly in your ammo, so loading the right one is the cheapest big upgrade you can make.

On a stacked Slayer task (Smoke Devils, Dust Devils, Nechryael in multi), throw Black chinchompas — like magic bursting, they hit every monster at once for fast XP. And always wear an Ava’s device: it picks your arrows back up so you’re not paying for ammo every kill.
Ironman Ranged Gear Progression
Ironmen earn every piece, so ranged progression follows the content you can do. The order that matters:
- Early — a Magic shortbow (Fletching) and a Rune crossbow with bolts you fletch yourself, in Black d’hide (Crafting). Do Animal Magnetism for an Ava’s device so you keep your ammo.
- Toxic blowpipe — from Zulrah. The single biggest ranged power spike for most accounts; rush Zulrah once you can.
- Necklace of anguish — built from a Zenyte (zenyte shards drop from Demonic gorillas and similar).
- Crystal armour + Bow of Faerdhinen — the Gauntlet (after Song of the Elves). A complete, ammo-free ranged setup from one piece of content.
- Armadyl armour — Kree’arra in the Armadyl God Wars Dungeon. Pegasian boots — Cerberus.
- Masori armour — Tombs of Amascut. Zaryte crossbow + vambraces — Nex. The endgame chase.
Ironman priority: blowpipe from Zulrah first, then the Gauntlet for a crystal/Bof setup, anguish from gorillas, and finally raids (ToA) and Nex for Masori and the Zaryte crossbow.
F2P Ranged Gear
Free-to-play ranged is bows and dragonhide — the blowpipe, crossbows, Masori and Ava’s device are all members-only. So an F2P setup is simple: the best bow you can draw, the strongest arrows you can afford, and a full dragonhide kit for the Ranged-attack bonus.

No Ava’s device in F2P — it’s members, so you pick arrows back up by hand. Stand where your arrows land (or fight magic-using monsters that stay put), and buy adamant arrows in bulk. What is the best ranged weapon in OSRS?
There isn’t one — it depends on the target. The Twisted Bow (85 Ranged) is BiS against high-Magic targets and most raid bosses; the Bow of Faerdhinen with Crystal armour is BiS against low-to-mid-defence targets; the Zaryte Crossbow with enchanted bolts is the best crossbow; and the Toxic Blowpipe is the fastest weapon and best DPS on many mid-defence monsters.
What is the best ranged armour in OSRS?
Masori armour (f) is best in slot (80 Ranged), followed by Armadyl and Crystal armour (both 70). Black d’hide is the cheap workhorse at 40 Ranged. Finish the setup with a Necklace of anguish, Zaryte vambraces, Pegasian boots and an Ava’s assembler.
