OSRS Prayer Gear & Bonus

Prayer gear works differently from the three combat styles — it doesn’t add damage. Instead, every point of Prayer bonus slows how fast your prayer points drain, so your prayers stay on longer. At a boss you keep a Protect prayer and a damage prayer (Piety, Rigour or Augury) switched on; Prayer bonus plus a few restore potions is what lets you hold those for a whole trip instead of running dry.
This guide covers both halves: the gear that gives Prayer bonus (by slot), and the prayers worth using. One catch worth knowing up front — at a real boss you barely use prayer gear at all. Your damage setup (an offensive cape, amulet, ring and gloves) gives almost no Prayer bonus, and that’s fine — you keep your damage and sustain prayer with restore potions instead. Full prayer-bonus gear is for training and AFK content.
Every figure below is sourced from our drift-checked item database and spot-verified against the OSRS Wiki. To plan a real setup, load the OSRS Best in Slot Gear Calculator and sort any slot by Prayer bonus.
New to prayer? Start here. Prayer bonus means your prayers last longer — nothing more. For training or AFK flicking, wear full Proselyte (+18 across body, legs and head). For bossing, keep your normal damage gear and just bring Prayer potions — almost no high-end damage gear gives Prayer bonus, so you sustain prayer with potions and flicking, not by swapping gear.
Prayer bonus = slows prayer drain (about 3.33% longer per point). Flicking = toggling a prayer on and off each tick to save points. Protect prayer = blocks most of the damage from one attack style.
How Prayer Bonus Works
Prayer bonus does exactly one thing: it slows the rate your prayer points drain. Each point makes your prayers last roughly 3.33% longer — it does not make the prayers themselves stronger. Stack around 30 points and your prayers last about twice as long.
- For training or AFK content — where you flick prayers for hours — stack as much Prayer bonus as you can: full Proselyte or Sunfire fanatic, a god book, Devout boots and Holy wraps.
- For bossing — your damage gear comes first, and almost none of it gives Prayer bonus (your cape, amulet, ring and gloves are all offensive). So at a boss you don’t swap in prayer gear — you sustain prayer with Prayer or Super restore potions and by flicking.
The short version: more Prayer bonus = fewer potions and longer trips. It never changes what a prayer does — only how long you can keep it on.
Prayer-Bonus Gear by Slot
The highest Prayer bonus available in each slot. Requirements shown are the Prayer (or Defence) level to wear.
| Slot | Best in slot | Mid | Budget |
|---|---|---|---|
| Head | Sunfire fanatic helm (+6) | God mitre (+5, 40 Prayer) | Proselyte sallet (+4) |
| Body | Sunfire fanatic cuirass (+10) | Proselyte hauberk (+8) | Monk’s robe top (+6) |
| Legs | Sunfire fanatic chausses (+8) | Proselyte cuisse (+6) | Monk’s robe bottom |
| Cape | Soul cape (+8, 70 Prayer) | Ardougne cloak 4 (+6) | Ardougne cloak 3 (+5) |
| Neck | Dragonbone / Bonecrusher necklace (+12) | God stole (+10, 60 Prayer) | Holy symbol (+8) |
| Hands | Holy wraps (+3) | Tormented bracelet (+2) | Combat bracelet |
| Feet | Devout boots (+5, 60 Prayer) | Echo boots (+4) | Holy sandals (+3) |
| Ring | Ring of the gods (i) (+8) | Ring of the gods (+4) | — |
| Shield | Holy / Unholy book (+5) | Spectral spirit shield (+3) | Damaged book |
When does this table matter? Mostly for Prayer training and AFK content, where you flick prayers for hours and damage doesn’t matter — there you stack as much Prayer bonus as you can. At a real boss your damage gear wins every slot (an offensive cape, amulet, ring and gloves give little or no Prayer bonus, and you keep them), so you sustain prayer with restore potions and flicking instead of the gear above.
The Prayers Worth Using
Prayer bonus is only worth stacking if you’re running good prayers in the first place. The ones that matter for combat:
| Prayer | Level | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Protect from Magic / Missiles / Melee | 37 / 40 / 43 | Blocks most of the damage from that attack style — the core defensive prayer at every boss. Pick the one matching the boss’s attack. |
| Piety Melee | 70 | +20% Attack, +23% Strength, +25% Defence — the melee offensive prayer. |
| Rigour Ranged | 74 | +20% Ranged attack, +23% Ranged damage, +25% Defence — the ranged offensive prayer. Unlocked with the Dexterous prayer scroll (Chambers of Xeric). |
| Augury Magic | 77 | +25% magic accuracy and Defence, +4% magic damage — the magic offensive prayer. Unlocked with the Arcane prayer scroll (Chambers of Xeric). |
| Chivalry Melee | 60 | The step before Piety — the melee offensive prayer for accounts under 70 Prayer. |
| Preserve Utility | 55 | Your boosted stats (from potions) last 50% longer — worth keeping on through any long trip. |
| Smite PvP | 52 | Drains your target’s Prayer as you damage them — a wilderness/PvP tool, not for PvM. |
At any boss the combo is one Protect prayer + the offensive prayer for your style (Piety, Rigour or Augury). That’s two prayers draining at once — exactly why Prayer bonus and restore potions matter.
Keeping Your Prayer Up
Gear slows the drain; these refill it:
- Prayer potions restore prayer points; Super restores do the same and also fix drained combat stats — the bossing standard.
- Ancient or Forgotten brews restore prayer points and boost your Magic — the pick at magic bosses, where a plain restore would leave your Magic level dropped.
- A Holy wrench in your inventory (or the Prayer cape’s effect) makes each potion dose restore more points.
- A Bonecrusher necklace buries bones automatically for passive Prayer XP as you fight — and it’s the best Prayer-bonus amulet (+12).
- Flicking — toggling a prayer off and on each game tick — drains almost no points, and it’s how players hold overhead prayers for long stretches without potions.
Ironman Prayer-Gear Progression
Ironmen earn every piece, so Prayer bonus comes together as you unlock the content:
- Early — Monk’s robes (Edgeville Monastery) and a Holy symbol you string yourself give cheap starter Prayer bonus.
- Proselyte — from The Slug Menace quest; your first full prayer-armour set (+18).
- God book — assembled from pages collected around the world; +5 in the shield slot.
- Devout boots — the Grotesque Guardians. Ring of the gods — wilderness bosses, imbued to +8.
- Soul cape (Soul Wars) and Sunfire fanatic (Fortis Colosseum) are the endgame Prayer-bonus pieces.
Prayer Gear FAQ
What is Prayer bonus in OSRS?
Prayer bonus is an equipment stat that slows how fast your prayer points drain — each point makes your prayers last about 3.33% longer. It does not make prayers stronger; it only lets you keep them on longer before you need a Prayer potion. Stacking around 30 points roughly doubles how long a prayer lasts.
What is the best Prayer bonus gear in OSRS?
For pure Prayer bonus: Sunfire fanatic or Proselyte for body, legs and head, a Soul cape (+8), a Ring of the gods (i) (+8), a Dragonbone or Bonecrusher necklace (+12), Devout boots (+5) and Holy wraps (+3) — best for Prayer training and AFK content. At a real boss you keep your full damage gear, which gives little Prayer bonus, and sustain prayer with restore potions and flicking instead of swapping in prayer gear.
What prayers should I use for bossing in OSRS?
One Protect prayer matching the boss’s attack style (Protect from Magic, Missiles or Melee), plus the offensive prayer for your combat style: Piety (level 70) for melee, Rigour (74) for ranged, or Augury (77) for magic. Running two prayers at once is why Prayer bonus and restore potions matter.
How do I stop my Prayer running out in OSRS?
Bring Prayer or Super restore potions, stack Prayer bonus gear to slow the drain, keep a Holy wrench in your inventory so each dose restores more, and flick your prayers off and on between attacks to save points.
