The Original OSRS Best in Slot Gear Calculator

Best in Slot (BiS) means the single highest-stat item available for a particular equipment slot — like helm, body, weapon — given a specific combat style. In Old School Runescape, BiS gear changes depending on whether you're fighting with melee, ranged, or magic, and whether you care about accuracy, max hit, or defence.

Our BiS Calculator looks at every equippable item in the game and ranks them by real DPS for Attack, Ranged and Magic (and by raw bonus for Defence and Prayer), so you don't have to memorize stat tables.

Three steps:

1. Pick your combat style using the buttons above the gear grid. Melee, Ranged and Magic are ranked by real DPS — so the meta pick wins (Tumeken's Shadow, Twisted bow, Scythe of Vitur) — while Defence and Prayer rank by stat bonus. Every slot fills with the best item for that style.

The big three are typically the Tumeken's Shadow (BiS magic weapon, dropped from Tombs of Amascut), the Twisted Bow (BiS ranged weapon, Chambers of Xeric drop), and the Scythe of Vitur (BiS slash 2H, Theatre of Blood). All three trade for hundreds of millions to billions of GP depending on market conditions.

For melee armour, Torva is the most expensive full set — also a Theatre of Blood drop. Live prices change weekly, so check the Grand Exchange for current values.

No — and most players never reach full BiS. The difference between BiS and one tier down (e.g. Bandos vs. Torva, Blowpipe vs. Twisted Bow) is often only 5-15% DPS in real combat. For 95% of PvM content, near-BiS or even mid-tier gear clears bosses fine.

BiS becomes worth chasing for endgame content — Inferno, Colosseum, Theatre of Blood Hard Mode, CoX 100+ scaled — where the DPS margin matters for mechanics or kill speed. For everything else, "good enough" is good enough.

Each style has its own stat priority:

• Melee — Strength bonus dominates max hit; Slash/Stab/Crush attack bonus dictates accuracy. The split between these matters because most weapons specialize.
• Ranged — Ranged Strength scales max hit; Ranged attack bonus drives accuracy. Two-handed bows usually beat crossbow + shield setups in DPS but lose defence.
• Magic — Magic damage % multiplies your max hit (capped at +30% with full Virtus + Shadow); Magic attack bonus is the accuracy stat.

The same item slot can have wildly different BiS choices per style — e.g. the helm slot has Torva for melee, Masori for ranged, and Ancestral hat for magic.

Most BiS gear comes from endgame raids and bosses:

• Tombs of Amascut — Tumeken's Shadow, Osmumten's Fang, Masori, Lightbearer
• Theatre of Blood — Scythe of Vitur, Torva, Avernic defender, Sanguinesti staff
• Chambers of Xeric — Twisted Bow, Ancestral, Kodai, Dragon claws
• Nex / Nightmare / Phantom Muspah — Various other top-tier drops
• Grand Exchange — Almost everything is tradeable, so GP shortcuts the grind for non-Ironman accounts

BiS shifts whenever Jagex releases a new top-tier item — typically every 6-12 months when a new raid or major boss launches. Recent BiS-shifting releases include the Tumeken's Shadow (ToA, 2022) replacing Trident of the Swamp for magic, the Soulreaper Axe (Phantom Muspah, 2023) becoming a top-tier 2H melee weapon, and various Project Rebalance tweaks adjusting stat values.

The amulet (necklace) slot is best-in-slot per style: Amulet of rancour for melee (the upgraded torture, needs 90 Hitpoints), Necklace of anguish for ranged, and the Occult necklace for magic. If you want one amulet for everything on a budget, the Amulet of fury is the classic all-round pick. Amulet and necklace are the same equipment slot, so the best amulet is also the best necklace in OSRS.

For the hands slot: Ferocious gloves are best for melee, Zaryte vambraces for ranged (the only hands item with a Ranged Strength bonus), and the Confliction gauntlets for magic. Barrows gloves (from Recipe for Disaster) are the best budget all-round option and carry most accounts for a long time.

The four ancient rings from Desert Treasure II lead each style: Ultor ring for melee Strength (or Bellator ring for melee accuracy), Venator ring for ranged, and Magus ring for magic. In raids the Lightbearer (faster special-attack regeneration) often wins, and the Ring of suffering (i) is best for defence. Budget picks: the imbued Berserker, Archers and Seers rings, or the Brimstone ring.

Best-in-slot boots: Primordial boots (from Cerberus) for melee, and Avernic treads for both ranged and magic — the treads out-stat the older Pegasian and Eternal boots. On a budget, Dragon boots (melee) and Devout boots (prayer-heavy setups) are strong, cheap steps below them.

For the shield slot: the Avernic defender is best for melee (an offensive off-hand), the Twisted buckler for ranged, and Elidinis' ward (f) (or the Arcane spirit shield) for magic. Against dragons, the Dragonfire shield or ward adds fire protection. The Dragon defender is the best budget melee off-hand.

The best capes are Infernal cape for melee (from the Inferno), Dizana's quiver for ranged (from the Fortis Colosseum), and an imbued god cape for magic (from Mage Arena II). The Max cape matches their combat stats once you have all 99s. On a budget, the Fire cape and the basic god capes are excellent value.

For the helmet slot: Torva full helm is best for melee (Neitiznot faceguard is the budget pick), Masori mask (f) for ranged, and the Ancestral hat for magic. Crucially, while you are on a Slayer task the imbued Slayer helmet (i) beats all of them for every combat style.
