Dragon defender

“A defensive weapon.”

The Dragon defender (often shortened to “Ddef”) is a melee off-hand worn in the shield slot, requiring 60 Defence to equip. It's the second strongest defender in Old School RuneScape, behind only the Avernic defender, and it does not degrade — which makes it the standard melee shield-slot pick for most players. It's untradeable, so you can't buy it; you earn it from the level-106 Cyclopes in the Warriors' Guild.

Equipment bonuses

The dragon defender offers a balanced set of melee attack and defence bonuses plus a strength bonus — the reason it's worn over a heavier shield for melee DPS. Its full worn stats are in the table below.

How to get the Dragon defender

The Warriors' Guild basement
Work your way up the defenders at the Warriors' Guild until you've earned a rune defender from the Cyclopes.
Show the rune defender to Lorelai to unlock permanent access to the basement, where the stronger level-106 Cyclopes spawn.
Keep fighting those Cyclopes — the dragon defender is a random drop from them. (Warrior Guild tokens are needed for time in the basement, unless you have an Attack cape equipped.)
You need 60 Defence to equip the dragon defender, but the Cyclopes don't check your stats — you can get the drop earlier and wear it once you hit 60.
Next step up: attach an Avernic defender hilt (a Theatre of Blood drop) to a dragon defender to make the Avernic defender, the melee best-in-slot off-hand, which then requires 70 Attack and 70 Defence.

Dragon defender FAQ

How do you get the Dragon defender?
It's a drop from the stronger level-106 Cyclopes in the basement of the Warriors' Guild. To unlock the basement the first time, show a rune defender to Lorelai and she grants permanent access; after that you keep killing the Cyclopes until one drops.
Can you buy the Dragon defender?
No — it's untradeable, so there's no Grand Exchange price. You have to earn it from the Warriors' Guild Cyclopes yourself.
What level do you need for the Dragon defender?
You need 60 Defence to equip it. Interestingly, the Cyclopes don't check your stats, so you can obtain the drop before reaching 60 Defence — you just can't wear it until you do.
Do you need a rune defender to get the Dragon defender?
You need a rune defender once, to show Lorelai for first-time basement access. After that you keep permanent access — you don't need to keep a rune defender in your bank to get dragon defender drops.
Does the Dragon defender degrade?
No — it never degrades and needs no charges. That's a big reason it's the go-to melee off-hand for most players, since there's no upkeep.
Is the Dragon defender the best defender?
It's the second best. The Avernic defender is stronger, but it's far rarer and harder to get. The dragon defender is the best non-degrading defender you can earn directly from the Warriors' Guild, which makes it the standard pick below avernic.
Dragon defender vs Avernic defender?
The Avernic defender has higher attack, defence and strength bonuses and is the melee best-in-slot off-hand. The dragon defender is cheaper to earn and is the upgrade to the avernic — you make an Avernic defender by attaching an Avernic defender hilt to a dragon defender (which then needs 70 Attack and 70 Defence).
What is the defender progression in OSRS?
Defenders go bronze → iron → steel → black → mithril → adamant → rune → dragon → avernic. Each one drops from the Warriors' Guild Cyclopes after you've obtained the previous tier; the dragon defender sits one step below the top-tier Avernic defender.
