The Avernic defender hilt is the upgrade part from the Theatre of Blood. It is not a defender and you cannot wear it. Use it on a dragon defender and you get the Avernic defender, the finished shield-slot item.

How to get an Avernic defender hilt

The hilt only comes from one raid, and Entry Mode does not count.

Ways to obtain it
Theatre of Blood, normal mode — a unique reward from the Monumental chest. Once the chest gives a unique (about 1/9.1 with no deaths), the hilt is 8/19 of the picks.
Theatre of Blood, hard mode — the unique chance rises to about 1/7.7, but the hilt is weighted lower at 7/18 so the other uniques show up more.
Grand Exchange — the hilt is tradeable, with a buy limit of 8 every 4 hours.

Deaths in the raid lower the unique chance. The MVP, based on damage dealt and deaths, is the most likely to get the item.

What the Avernic defender hilt makes

The hilt makes one thing. Use it on a dragon defender, confirm, and you get the Avernic defender. It is a shield-slot defender that needs 70 Attack and 70 Defence.

Reversing it does not give the hilt back. The hilt is destroyed, so keep the defender unless you have a reason to go back to a dragon defender.

Hilt vs the finished Avernic defender

The hilt is an item you hold, and the finished Avernic defender is the item you wear. The hilt has no equipment stats. You need it to turn a Dragon defender into the better one.

The dragon defender is the second strongest defender, behind the Avernic one. The Avernic version has the top strength bonus in the shield slot at +8, one higher than the dragonfire shield. For the wider picture, see melee gear.
