The Gauntlet Strategy Guide

Requirements - Song of the Elves

The Gauntlet is a solo minigame in Prifddinas, unlocked after the Song of the Elves quest. Every run drops you into a randomly generated instance with nothing but your stats — no gear, no supplies. You mine crystal shards and ore, chop crystal and phren bark, and fish paddlefish, then craft a full tier of weapon, armour and cooked food before the timer runs down and the boss room opens. Walk in fully kitted and the fight is fair; rush the prep and you fight the Hunllef undergeared, which is where most early deaths come from. There are two versions: the normal Gauntlet and the Corrupted Gauntlet, a harder variant that gives you less time to prep and throws stronger enemies at you, in exchange for much better drop rates.

The boss is the Crystalline Hunllef (Corrupted Hunllef in the corrupted version — 600 and 1,000 hitpoints respectively, same mechanics). It runs two separate prayer puzzles at once, and most guides blur the two. First, its own attacks: it alternates between Ranged and Magic every four attacks, starting on Ranged, so you flick Protect from Missiles and Protect from Magic to match — get the switch right and its standard attacks stop being the thing that kills you. Second, your attacks against it: every sixth hit you land that is off its current overhead (zero-damage hits count too), the Hunllef changes which style it prays against. You beat that by carrying two weapons — usually a halberd and the bow — and swapping so your hits keep landing off-prayer, so it never protects against your strongest style. Miss the weapon swap and your damage craters even though nothing on screen looks wrong.

On top of the prayer dance you are dodging the room. Tornadoes spawn as the Hunllef loses health, chase you, and last 20 ticks (about 12 seconds) each — you walk them off while keeping the prayer-and-weapon rotation going, and that juggling act is the real skill check. Do not stand underneath the boss: its stomp hits for a huge chunk and does not count toward its four-attack cycle. And keep game sounds on — while it is on its magic attacks it can throw a prayer-disabling special with a distinct sound cue, and if your overheads get switched off without you noticing, the next hit can end the run. Almost every Gauntlet death is one of three things: walking into a tornado, eating a stomp, or missing that prayer-off sound.

The Hunllef drops the crystal armour seed and the enhanced crystal weapon seed, which craft into crystal armour, the Blade of saeldor and the Bow of faerdhinen — the reason anyone grinds this. Run the normal Gauntlet first until the prayer-and-tornado rotation is muscle memory, then move to Corrupted: it cuts your prep window to seven and a half minutes, and its monsters and Hunllef hit harder, so it punishes weak prep — but the drop rates are far better (the crystal armour and weapon seeds go from 1/120 to 1/50, and the enhanced seed that makes the Blade and Bow from 1/2,000 to 1/400), which is why it becomes the grind people actually farm once they can clear it without thinking.

The Gauntlet - Regular Guide

You enter the Gauntlet with nothing — every item shown here is crafted inside the raid from resources you gather (ore, bark, fish, herbs, crystal shards). This is the full target set while you learn: a complete suit of perfected crystal armour plus a crystal weapon. Build the whole set before fighting the Crystalline Hunllef. New to it? See the OSRS Wiki strategy guide.

The Gauntlet - Speedrunning Guide

A faster, partial craft for experienced players chasing kills per hour. You still craft everything inside the raid — this setup skips some perfected pieces to save gathering time, trading a little survivability for speed. Only attempt once the regular craft feels comfortable. Tactics: OSRS Wiki strategy guide.

The Gauntlet - Regular Corrupted Guide

The Corrupted Gauntlet is considerably harder and rewards more. As in regular mode you craft all of this gear inside from gathered resources — nothing is brought in. Aim for a full suit of corrupted armour and a corrupted weapon before facing the Corrupted Hunllef. Learn the mechanics first on the OSRS Wiki strategy guide.

The Gauntlet — Frequently Asked Questions

What is the recommended gear for The Gauntlet in OSRS?

The recommended setup for The Gauntlet is shown above — a hand-picked loadout for this encounter rather than an auto-ranked gear grid, because the gauntlet isn't a standard combat-DPS fight (it's a raid, skilling, or multi-phase encounter where the best setup depends on role and mechanics, not a single damage number).

Bring the inventory shown alongside it (food, potions, and any fight-specific items), and check the strategy notes for how to approach each phase.

What stats do I need to fight The Gauntlet?

The Gauntlet doesn't gate on combat stats the way a normal boss does — there's no level wall, because the gear you fight in is crafted inside the instance and scaled to the encounter. What you actually need is the Song of the Elves quest for access, plus enough skilling and combat competence to gather fast and fight the Crystalline Hunllef without running out of time. Most people start the normal Gauntlet around the 70s-80s combat range and move to Corrupted once the prayer flicks and weapon switches feel comfortable. It's a mechanics check, not a stat check.

Do I need full BiS gear to kill The Gauntlet?

No — and not for the reason you'd think. The Gauntlet strips you on entry: you walk in with an empty inventory and a crystal sceptre, then skill and fight your way through the dungeon gathering shards, ore, fish and bark, and you craft your own crystal armour, weapon and potions inside the instance before facing the Crystalline Hunllef. Your bank gear — Torva, a Shadow, your Trident — none of it comes with you.

What actually decides runs is your prep: how far you upgrade (perfected armour, and bow vs staff for the Hunllef's attack switches), your food and prayer-potion count, and your prayer-flicking against the Hunllef. Corrupted Gauntlet is the same fight with tighter timers. Use the gear pages here to plan the rest of your account; for the Gauntlet itself, your gear is whatever you build in the room.

How do I get to The Gauntlet?

The Gauntlet is inside Prifddinas, so you need the Song of the Elves quest to get in. Once you're in the city, head to the far west and take the Gauntlet / Corrupted Gauntlet portal in the Tower of Voices area. There's no fairy ring or slayer teleport for it — the fastest repeat trip is a teleport straight into Prifddinas (Teleport Crystal, max cape, or a spirit tree) and a short run to the portal.

What are the best drops from The Gauntlet?

The "Notable Drops" section above lists the top items from The Gauntlet — the ones most players are actually grinding for. Most boss tables include a unique (the most valuable rare drop), a handful of mid-tier uniques, and a steady stream of GP-value drops like alchables, runes, and crafting materials.

Drop rates and exact loot tables come from the OSRS game data; specific roll mechanics (1/X, scales with kill count, etc.) vary boss-to-boss — check the OSRS Wiki for full drop tables and rate-of-return calculations.

How do I afford The Gauntlet gear?

There's nothing to buy. Crystal armour, the crystal weapons (Blade of Saeldor, Bow of Faerdhinen) and the crystal sceptre are all made from seeds and shards you earn inside the Gauntlet, and the gear you actually fight in is crafted fresh each run from resources you gather in the instance. No GP, no Grand Exchange, no shortcut — the only real cost is the time to learn the rotation and bank enough completions for the seeds you want.

How much DPS will my setup do against The Gauntlet?

Use our OSRS DPS Calculator to find out. Load your stats from the hiscores, equip your gear, pick The Gauntlet as the target, and the calculator shows your max hit, hit chance, and DPS across melee, ranged, and magic so you can see which style wins for this fight.
