Rune scimitar

“A vicious, curved sword.”

The Rune scimitar is a one-handed melee weapon and one of the best-known budget weapons in Old School RuneScape. It needs only 40 Attack to wield, is available to free-to-play players, and attacks fast at 4 ticks (2.4s). Its strong +45 slash attack and +44 strength for the level make it the go-to early melee weapon — the standard upgrade once you can use rune gear, and a staple for low-level Slayer and training. It's cheap on the Grand Exchange, can be smithed, and drops from a wide range of monsters.

Equipment bonuses

The scimitar's worn stats are simple: a solid +45 slash attack and +44 strength for its tier, plus a small +7 stab. Slash is the style that matters — it's what drives the weapon's accuracy and damage at this level.

How to get the Rune scimitar

There are three practical ways to get a Rune scimitar, and for most players buying it is by far the easiest.

Ways to obtain it
Grand Exchange — the cheapest and fastest route. It's free-to-play and trades for a low, stable price (buy limit 70 every 4 hours).
Smithing — make one yourself with 90 Smithing and 2 runite bars for 150 XP. At that level buying is usually cheaper, so this is mainly for the XP or an Ironman.
Monster drops — it drops from a wide range of monsters, so you'll often pick them up while training and Slayer.

Notable monsters that drop the Rune scimitar include Fire giants, Zamorak warriors, K'ril Tsutsaroth, Scorpia, Basilisk Knights, Rune dragons, Adamant dragons and many Skeleton-type monsters, among others. Drop rates vary by monster, so treat this as a list of who drops it rather than a rate table.

The one shop the wiki lists for it is Iorwerth's Arms in Prifddinas (a members' city), which sells it for 38,400 coins — far more than the Grand Exchange, so the GE, smithing or drops are the practical routes, especially for free-to-play players.

Rune scimitar FAQ

What level do you need for a Rune scimitar?
40 Attack to wield it. There's no other requirement — once you reach 40 Attack you can equip and use it straight away, and it's available to free-to-play players.
Is the Rune scimitar free-to-play?
Yes — the Rune scimitar is a free-to-play weapon. F2P players can buy it on the Grand Exchange, smith it, or get it as a monster drop, making it one of the best melee weapons available without membership.
How do you get a Rune scimitar?
Three main ways: buy it on the Grand Exchange (the cheapest, fastest route), smith it with 90 Smithing and two runite bars, or get it as a drop from many monsters — Fire giants, Zamorak warriors and others (see the section above). Most players just buy one.
How do you smith a Rune scimitar?
You need 90 Smithing and 2 runite bars on an anvil with a hammer. It gives 150 Smithing XP. At that level buying the scimitar on the Grand Exchange is usually far cheaper than smithing one, so most players smith only for the XP or an Ironman supply.
Does the Rune scimitar have a special attack?
No — the Rune scimitar has no special attack. It's a plain, fast melee weapon; its value is the strong slash and strength bonus for its low level, not a spec.
What is the Rune scimitar's attack speed?
4 ticks (2.4 seconds) per hit — fast for a melee weapon. That quick attack speed, paired with its +44 strength bonus, is what makes it such an effective training and Slayer weapon at low Attack levels.
Rune scimitar vs Dragon scimitar — which is better?
The Dragon scimitar is the stronger weapon — it hits harder, has the same fast 2.4-second speed, and adds a special attack (Sever, 55% energy). But it needs 60 Attack, is members-only, and requires the Monkey Madness I quest. The Rune scimitar is the free-to-play, no-quest, 40-Attack option, and the natural step before the Dragon scimitar.
How much is a Rune scimitar worth?
It's one of the cheapest rune weapons — see the live Grand Exchange price and history chart above for the exact current figure. Its low, stable price is a big part of why it's the default budget melee weapon.
