Dragon scimitar

“A vicious, curved sword.”

The Dragon scimitar is the strongest scimitar in Old School RuneScape — a fast, one-handed slash weapon. It needs 60 Attack and completion of the Monkey Madness I quest to wield. With a 4-tick attack speed and a strong +66 strength bonus it's a long-standing budget melee weapon: not best-in-slot overall (the abyssal whip and Ghrazi rapier out-class it), but cheap, fast and one of the most popular weapons in the game for training Strength. It's bought from Daga on Ape Atoll for 100,000 coins and trades on the Grand Exchange.

Equipment bonuses

The Dragon scimitar is a pure slash trainer: a big +67 slash attack (with +8 stab and a small −2 crush penalty), a +66 strength bonus, and a token +1 slash defence — nothing on the magic or ranged side. Its appeal is the high strength bonus on a fast 4-tick one-hander, not a deep stat sheet.

The Sever special attack

The Dragon scimitar's special attack is called Sever. It costs 55% of your special-attack energy and rolls against the target's slash defence with 25% higher accuracy — so it lands more often than a normal hit, but it adds no extra damage and does not lower the target's defence.

Prayer lock (PvP)
8t · 4.8s
In PvP fights only, a successful Sever hit disables the target's active protection prayer (Protect from Magic, Missiles or Melee) and stops them re-praying it for 8 ticks (4.8 seconds) — a window to land damage through their overhead. Against monsters there is no prayer effect, so Sever is just a more accurate normal hit and is rarely worth the energy in PvM.
The prayer-disabling effect is the scimitar's real niche. When the special first launched it instead stopped the opponent from moving; Jagex reworked it to the protection-prayer lock in the 4 April 2005 update.

How to get the Dragon scimitar

To wield the Dragon scimitar you need 60 Attack and completion of the Monkey Madness I quest — without the quest done, you can own it but not equip it.

Where it comes from
Buy it from Daga's Scimitar Smithy on Ape Atoll for 100,000 coins. You don't need a monkeyspeak amulet — right-click 'Trade' on Daga — but you must be in monkey form (a greegree), unless you've also finished Monkey Madness II.
If you've freed King Awowogei in Recipe for Disaster, the Ape Atoll Teleport spell (64 Magic) drops you near the shop for a faster trip.
It's also a rare drop from the Wilderness boss Scorpia and from the Zombie Pirate's Locker.
Most players skip the trip and simply buy it on the Grand Exchange (buy limit 70 / 4 hours).
It can't be smithed. Like most dragon equipment, the Dragon scimitar cannot be made with the Smithing skill — the shop, the Grand Exchange, or those rare drops are the only sources.

Dragon scimitar FAQ

What level do you need for a Dragon scimitar?
60 Attack to wield it — plus completion of the Monkey Madness I quest. There's no Strength or Defence requirement, but you do need to finish the quest before you can equip it.
What quest do you need for the Dragon scimitar?
Monkey Madness I. The scimitar can't be wielded until that quest is complete, and it's sold by Daga on Ape Atoll, which the quest opens up.
Where do you buy the Dragon scimitar?
From Daga's Scimitar Smithy on Ape Atoll for 100,000 coins. You don't need a monkeyspeak amulet — just right-click 'Trade' on Daga — but you must be in monkey form (a greegree), unless you've also finished Monkey Madness II. Most players just buy it on the Grand Exchange instead.
What does the Dragon scimitar's special attack do?
Its special, Sever, costs 55% special energy and rolls against the target's slash defence with 25% higher accuracy — it adds no extra damage. In PvP only, a successful hit disables the target's protection prayers and stops them re-praying for 8 ticks (4.8 seconds). Against monsters it's just a more accurate normal hit, so it's rarely used in PvM.
Is the Dragon scimitar good for training Strength?
Yes — it's one of the most popular Strength-training weapons in the game. Its high +66 strength on a fast 4-tick one-hander, plus the fact that whips and hastae can't train Strength on their own, make the Dragon scimitar a go-to choice on the aggressive Strength attack style.
Dragon scimitar vs abyssal whip — which is better?
The abyssal whip is the upgrade: it has higher attack bonuses and is more powerful overall. The Dragon scimitar's edge is that it can train pure Strength (a whip can't) and it's cheaper, which is why many players use the scimitar to train Strength and a whip for Attack.
How much does a Dragon scimitar cost?
Its fixed shop price from Daga is 100,000 coins; on the Grand Exchange the live price is in the panel above and is usually in that ballpark. Buy limit is 70 every 4 hours.
Can you make a Dragon scimitar with Smithing?
No. Like most dragon equipment, the Dragon scimitar cannot be smithed from raw materials. You buy it from Daga on Ape Atoll (or the Grand Exchange), or get it as a rare drop from Scorpia or the Zombie Pirate's Locker.

Update history

4 Apr 2005Special attack reworked: it now costs 55% special attack energy and prevents the opponent from using protection prayers for 5 seconds. The original special attack had instead stopped the opponent from moving for a short time.
