The defining feature of the elysian spirit shield is its passive effect: a 70% chance to reduce the damage you receive by 25%. Averaged out, this works out to roughly 17.5% overall damage reduction across a fight. A small animation plays over your character whenever the effect activates.
It is not universal mitigation. The passive does not reduce certain monster special attacks (such as dragonfire) or non-combat damage like poison and venom. Opponent healing effects — enchanted onyx bolts, Guthan's set — still heal their full amount even when the effect triggers, and recoil damage like Vengeance is applied after the reduction.
One useful quirk: if a hit would have dealt damage, the effect always removes at least 1, even on a hit of 1. That makes the shield strong against monsters that hit small amounts very often, such as the Kraken's tentacles. The reduction also stacks additively with the Justiciar armour set effect.
How to get the elysian spirit shield
The elysian spirit shield is not dropped directly. It is created by attaching an elysian sigil — a rare drop from the Corporeal Beast — to a blessed spirit shield with a hammer at an anvil. Doing it yourself requires 90 Prayer and 85 Smithing (granting 1,800 Smithing experience).
If you do not have the levels, Abbot Langley at the Edgeville Monastery will combine the sigil and blessed spirit shield for a fee of 1,500,000 coins. Because the assembled shield is tradeable, most players simply buy a finished one on the Grand Exchange rather than farming the sigil.
