Dragon full helm

“Protects your head and looks impressive too.”

The dragon full helm ("DFH") is a head-slot helmet that requires 60 Defence to equip. It posts solid mid-tier defences — +45 stab, +48 slash, +41 crush and +46 ranged defence — but offers no Prayer or Strength bonus, so it is not a best-in-slot combat piece. It is one of the rarest tradeable items in the game, dropped only by mithril dragons in the Ancient Cavern at an effective rate of about 1/8,192, and trades on the Grand Exchange for roughly 50 million coins — a price driven by rarity and prestige, not stats.

Equipment bonuses

The dragon full helm is a pure defensive helmet. It gives +45 stab, +48 slash and +41 crush defence, plus +46 ranged defence and a small -1 magic defence, with small negatives to magic and ranged attack (-6 magic, -3 ranged). It carries no Strength, Prayer or melee-attack bonus.

Its defences beat the dragon med helm but fall short of slot leaders like the Serpentine or Neitiznot faceguard once those are available. Equipping it needs only 60 Defence, and because it adds no Strength or Prayer it is worn as a sign of wealth far more often than for combat.

How to get the dragon full helm

The only source of the dragon full helm is killing mithril dragons in the Ancient Cavern. There are two ways it drops. The helm can come directly from a mithril dragon as a very rare drop at a rate of 1/32,768. It can also come from a barbarian spirit after lighting a pyre ship with chewed bones — chewed bones drop from mithril dragons at 3/128, and a lit pyre ship then yields the helm at 1/256.

Combining both paths, the effective drop rate of a dragon full helm per mithril dragon kill is about 1/8,192. There is no shop, quest reward, or creation recipe — every dragon full helm in the game came off a mithril dragon. Because it is tradeable, most players simply buy one on the Grand Exchange rather than grinding the drop themselves.

Is the dragon full helm worth it?

As a combat piece, the dragon full helm is not best-in-slot. Its +48 slash and +46 ranged defence are respectable for 60 Defence, but it has no Strength bonus for damage and no Prayer bonus for upkeep, so for serious melee training or bossing a slayer helmet, helm of neitiznot or a faceguard will out-perform it. There is no reason to pay tens of millions of coins for a defensive edge you can get for a fraction of the price.

What you are actually paying for is rarity and prestige. At an effective 1/8,192 drop and around 50 million coins, the dragon full helm is a wealth and collection-log flex rather than a power upgrade. It pairs cosmetically with the rest of the dragon armour set, and a dragon full helm ornament kit can be added to make the gold-trimmed version with identical stats. If you want raw combat value, check your account against the boss gear finder first — but if you want a rare statement helmet, this is one of the most iconic in OSRS.

Dragon full helm FAQ

What level do you need for the dragon full helm?

You need 60 Defence to wear the dragon full helm. There are no other skill requirements to equip it.

How do you get the dragon full helm?

It only drops from mithril dragons in the Ancient Cavern. It can drop directly at 1/32,768, or from a barbarian spirit after burning a pyre ship with chewed bones (chewed bones drop at 3/128, and the helm then comes at 1/256). The combined effective rate is about 1/8,192 per kill.

Is the dragon full helm best in slot?

No. It is a strong mid-tier defensive helmet for 60 Defence, but it has no Strength or Prayer bonus, so for combat it is beaten by helms like the slayer helmet, helm of neitiznot and the Serpentine helm. It is bought mainly for its rarity and prestige, not its stats.

How much is the dragon full helm worth?

It trades for roughly 50 million coins, with the live Grand Exchange price and history shown above. Its high alchemy value is 90K and its low alch is 60K — far below its market price, because the value comes from rarity, not alch.

Why is the dragon full helm so expensive?

Because it is extremely rare. It only comes from mithril dragons at an effective rate of about 1/8,192, and since it gives no Strength or Prayer bonus its high price is driven by rarity and prestige rather than combat usefulness. The wiki notes it is "more often used as a sign of wealth, rather than in combat."

Does the dragon full helm give a Strength bonus?

No. The dragon full helm has 0 Strength bonus and 0 Prayer bonus. It only provides defensive bonuses — +45 stab, +48 slash, +41 crush and +46 ranged defence — with small penalties to magic and ranged attack.

Can you trim the dragon full helm?

Yes. Combining a dragon full helm with a dragon full helm ornament kit creates the gold-trimmed dragon full helm (g). This is purely cosmetic and does not change the stats in any way.
