Nightmare staff

“An ancient staff corrupted by darkness.”

The Nightmare staff is a one-handed magic staff dropped by The Nightmare, requiring 72 Magic and 50 Hitpoints to wield. It attacks at 5 ticks (3.0s), autocasts both standard spells and Ancient Magicks, and gives +16 Magic attack with +15% magic damage. It is the base form: attach one of three orbs to forge the Volatile, Eldritch, or Harmonised staff. As a drop it rolls at roughly 1/300, and the tradeable base typically trades around 41M.

Equipment bonuses

The Nightmare staff's defining stat is its +15% magic damage, paired with +16 Magic attack and +14 Magic defence. It swings every 5 ticks (3.0 seconds) and needs 72 Magic and 50 Hitpoints to wield.

On its own it is a flat damage boost roughly on par with other +15% staves; the real value is unlocked when an orb turns it into one of the three upgraded variants.

How to get the Nightmare staff

The Nightmare staff is dropped only by The Nightmare, the boss released alongside the staff in 2020. It sits on the boss's armour/mace/staff unique table at a rarity of 1/300 per eligible kill (the staff rolls on a separate slot from the other uniques).

  • Members only — The Nightmare is a members boss.
  • 72 Magic, 50 Hitpoints required to actually wield the staff once you have it.
  • It is fully tradeable on the Grand Exchange, so you can buy the base staff directly instead of farming the boss — useful when you want it as a foundation for one of the orb upgrades.

You can also pick one up from the Grand Exchange for around its market value, currently near 41M.

The three orb upgrades

The Nightmare staff is the base form. Attaching one of three orbs (each also dropped by The Nightmare) forges an upgraded staff, raises the Magic requirement to 82, and makes the result untradeable. The upgrades can be reverted back to their tradeable components at any time, so the base staff you buy here is the foundation for all three:

  • Volatile orb → volatile nightmare staff: grants a high-damaging special attack.
  • Eldritch orb → eldritch nightmare staff: grants a prayer-restoring special attack.
  • Harmonised orb → harmonised nightmare staff: removes the ability to autocast Ancient Magicks but speeds casting from 5 ticks to 4 ticks, making it a top-tier standard-spell weapon.

Because each variant is untradeable, you cannot buy them outright — you buy this base staff plus the orb you want, then combine them.

Is the Nightmare staff worth it?

On its own, the Nightmare staff is a flat +15% magic damage staff with +16 Magic attack and the ability to autocast both standard spells and Ancient Magicks. That puts it in the same damage bracket as other 15% staves rather than far ahead of them, so as a standalone weapon it is a solid but not transformative pick.

Its real value is as an upgrade base. Almost every player who buys one intends to attach an orb and create a Volatile, Eldritch, or Harmonised staff — each of which is a genuine endgame magic weapon. If you are not chasing one of those variants, a cheaper standard-spell setup may serve you just as well. Compare it against alternatives in our magic gear guide before committing.

Nightmare staff FAQ

What level do you need to wield the Nightmare staff?

You need 72 Magic and 50 Hitpoints to wield it. Upgrading it into a Volatile, Eldritch, or Harmonised staff raises the Magic requirement to 82.

How do you get the Nightmare staff?

It is a drop from The Nightmare boss, rolling at roughly 1/300 per eligible kill. Because it is tradeable, you can also just buy it from the Grand Exchange.

What are the Volatile, Eldritch, and Harmonised staves?

They are upgraded versions made by attaching an orb to the Nightmare staff. The volatile staff gains a high-damaging special attack, the eldritch staff gains a prayer-restoring special attack, and the harmonised staff casts standard spells one tick faster (4 ticks) but loses Ancient Magicks autocast. All three need 82 Magic and are untradeable.

Does the Nightmare staff have a special attack?

No. The base Nightmare staff has no special attack. Only the upgraded variants do: the volatile and eldritch staves each gain a special attack once an orb is attached.

Can you autocast Ancient Magicks with the Nightmare staff?

Yes. The base Nightmare staff can autocast both standard spells and Ancient Magicks. Note that the harmonised upgrade loses Ancient Magicks autocast in exchange for faster standard-spell casting.

How much is the Nightmare staff worth?

The tradeable base staff trades on the Grand Exchange for around 41M. Live pricing and history are shown above.

Is the Nightmare staff a good magic weapon?

As a standalone weapon it gives +15% magic damage and +16 Magic attack, comparable to other top staves. Its main appeal is as the base for the three orb upgrades, which are stronger endgame magic weapons.

Can you turn an upgraded staff back into a Nightmare staff?

Yes. The volatile, eldritch, and harmonised staves can be reverted back into the tradeable Nightmare staff plus the orb at any time.

Update history

11 May 2022

The Nightmare staff now requires level 72 Magic to wield instead of level 65 Magic (Equipment Rebalance Tier Changes & Poll 76).

5 December 2019

The staff was given an additional requirement of 50 Hitpoints to wield, and its idle wielding animation was changed so the chain slightly swings (Game Improvements and Nightmare Beta Changes).
