Dragon felling axe

“A very powerful felling axe.”

The dragon felling axe is the highest-tier tradeable felling axe, a two-handed woodcutting tool that needs 61 Woodcutting to chop with and 60 Attack to wield. Felling axes are built for the Forestry activity: while carrying Forester's rations it grants +10% Woodcutting XP and a 20% chance to not deplete logs on a successful chop. It chops at the same speed as a regular dragon axe, and is crafted by combining a felling axe handle with a dragon axe. It trades on the Grand Exchange for roughly 2M.

Equipment bonuses

The dragon felling axe is a skilling tool first, with only modest combat bonuses: +60 slash, +51 crush and +67 strength, alongside a -3 stab penalty.

It swings on a 7-tick attack cycle (4.2 seconds) using the Axe combat style, and requires 60 Attack to equip — fine for chopping and the special attack, but far too slow and weak to use as a real combat weapon.

How to get the dragon felling axe

The dragon felling axe is not dropped or bought directly — it is a crafted item. You make it by using a felling axe handle on a dragon axe while holding a hammer and standing next to an anvil, with level 61 Smithing (the requirement is boostable). The combine takes a moment and grants 5 Smithing XP.

This process is irreversible — once combined you cannot split the parts back out — but the finished felling axe remains fully tradeable, so you can also simply buy a completed one on the Grand Exchange instead of crafting it. It also appears as a master-tier emote clue reward variation in Treasure Trails.

Special attack: Lumber Up

The dragon felling axe carries the Lumber Up special attack it shares with the dragon, infernal, 3rd age and crystal axes. Activating it consumes 100% of your special attack energy and temporarily boosts your Woodcutting level by 3. The boost decays one level every 60 seconds, returning to normal after about 3 minutes — casting Preserve extends that by 50%.

Because the boost is visible, you can use it to chop trees that need a higher level than you have — the axe itself can be wielded for chopping from 58 Woodcutting with the special active (though you still need 60 Attack to equip it). Note that boosts above level 99 are capped at 99, so the practical benefit tapers off at levels 97–98.

Is the dragon felling axe worth it?

The felling axes exist for the Forestry activity, not for chopping speed — a dragon felling axe chops at exactly the same rate as a normal dragon axe. Their value is the ration bonus: if you carry Forester's rations (in your inventory or a Forestry kit), every successful chop has a 10% Woodcutting XP boost and a 20% chance not to consume a log (or tree root in Rising Roots events), at the cost of one ration. Without rations on you, it behaves like a plain dragon axe.

It is the best tradeable felling axe, but the upgrade above it — the crystal felling axe — chops at the same dragon-axe speed and only differs cosmetically and in source. For most players the dragon version is the practical pick. See our skilling gear picks and the OSRS Woodcutting guide for where it fits your training plan.

Dragon felling axe FAQ

What level do you need for the dragon felling axe?

You need 61 Woodcutting to chop with it and 60 Attack to equip it. Crafting one from a felling axe handle and a dragon axe also needs 61 Smithing (boostable).

How do you make a dragon felling axe?

Use a felling axe handle on a dragon axe while holding a hammer and standing next to an anvil, with level 61 Smithing. The combine is irreversible, but the finished axe stays tradeable.

Is the dragon felling axe faster than a dragon axe?

No. It chops at the same speed as a regular dragon axe. Its advantage is the Forestry ration bonus — +10% Woodcutting XP and a 20% chance to not lose a log when you carry Forester's rations.

What is the dragon felling axe's special attack?

Its special is Lumber Up: it consumes 100% special energy to temporarily raise your Woodcutting level by 3 for about 3 minutes (extendable with Preserve). It can let you chop the axe itself from 58 Woodcutting.

How much is a dragon felling axe worth?

It trades on the Grand Exchange for roughly 2M coins. Check the live GE price tracker above for the current price.

Can you use the dragon felling axe as a weapon?

You can equip it as a 2-handed melee weapon — it has +60 slash, +51 crush and +67 strength — but with a slow 7-tick (4.2s) attack speed and a -3 stab penalty it is far too weak and slow to use seriously in combat. It is a skilling tool, not a real weapon.
