The tecu salamander is the strongest salamander in Old School RuneScape, a hybrid two-handed weapon that requires level 80 Attack, Magic and Ranged to wield and is loaded with irit tar as ammunition. Its standout trick is three attack styles in one weapon — Scorch (Slash), Blaze (Magic) and Flare (Ranged) — letting you hit an enemy's weakest defence without a gear swap. It's caught with the Hunter skill at level 79 rather than dropped, though it's tradeable for a couple hundred thousand coins.
Equipment bonuses
The tecu salamander carries +77 Slash attack, +87 Ranged attack and +91 melee Strength, plus a hidden magic strength bonus of 104 that powers its Blaze style. Each style draws on its own attack bonus, so the weapon flexes across all three combat types.

Other bonuses
Scorch (Slash) and Blaze (Magic) swing on a 5-tick speed (3.0s), while Flare (Ranged) speeds up to 4 ticks (2.4s) — a Rapid-like option — but every style needs you within melee distance (attack range 1) to land a hit.

How to get the tecu salamander
The tecu salamander is not a monster drop — you catch it yourself using the Hunter skill. It needs level 79 Hunter and a net trap, and is found south-east of Ralos' Rise in Varlamore. Each successful catch grants 344 Hunter experience.
Catching a fully-grown adult is rare — most attempts give you an immature tecu salamander instead, which can't be wielded. When you do land an adult, the game chat reads "The salamander is fully grown, you could use this as a weapon."
If you'd rather skip the grind, it's tradeable on the Grand Exchange — see the live price and history chart above. You can also train the skill with our OSRS Hunter guide.
How the salamander's attack styles work
The tecu salamander is loaded with irit tar as ammunition and offers three attack styles in a single weapon:
- Scorch — a Slash melee attack, using the +77 Slash bonus and +91 Strength, swinging every 5 ticks (3.0s).
- Blaze — a Magic attack powered by a hidden magic strength bonus of 104, also on a 5-tick speed.
- Flare — a Ranged attack using the irit tar's ranged strength of 60 (the same as dragon arrows), swinging faster at 4 ticks (2.4s), comparable to a bow's Rapid style.
Each style calculates its hit from its own attack bonus, so you can target whichever defence an enemy is weakest against without changing weapon. The catch: despite the Magic and Ranged styles, the salamander always needs you in melee distance to attack (attack range 1). It can still hit through fences and diagonally, so safespotting remains possible.
Is the tecu salamander worth it?
The tecu salamander is the strongest salamander in the game, but it's a niche pick rather than a top-tier DPS weapon. Its biggest pull is the two Salamander-only Combat Achievements — The Worst Ranged Weapon and More than just a ranged weapon — which the tecu is the best salamander for.
Because it covers Slash, Magic and Ranged in one slot, it's handy for low-effort hybrid setups and for fights where switching all your gear isn't worth it. For serious DPS you'll still reach for dedicated melee, ranged or magic gear. Compare options with our boss gear finder and watch its price on the GE price tracker.
Tecu salamander FAQ
What level do you need to use the tecu salamander?
You need level 80 Attack, 80 Magic and 80 Ranged to wield the tecu salamander. To catch one yourself, you instead need level 79 Hunter.
How do you get a tecu salamander?
It's caught with the Hunter skill using a net trap at level 79 Hunter, found south-east of Ralos' Rise in Varlamore, granting 344 Hunter XP per catch. Adult catches are rare — you'll often get an immature tecu salamander instead. It's also tradeable on the Grand Exchange.
What ammunition does the tecu salamander use?
It uses irit tar as ammunition. The irit tar's ranged strength of 60 (the same as dragon arrows) determines its Ranged max hit on the Flare style.
What are the tecu salamander's three attack styles?
Scorch (Slash melee), Blaze (Magic) and Flare (Ranged). Scorch and Blaze swing every 5 ticks (3.0s); Flare is faster at 4 ticks (2.4s). Each style uses its own attack bonus, so the weapon can hit all three combat types without a gear swap.
Is the tecu salamander good?
It's the strongest salamander in the game and the best one for the two Salamander Combat Achievements, but it's a niche hybrid weapon rather than a top DPS option. A drawback is that even its Magic and Ranged styles need you within melee distance to attack.
How much is a tecu salamander worth?
It usually trades for a fairly modest amount — see the live price and history chart above for the current figure, as it shifts with the market. Catching one yourself with Hunter avoids the cost entirely.
