The spirit shield is dropped only by the Corporeal Beast, at a rate of 8/512 (about 1/64). The Corporeal Beast is the sole source of the shield, the holy elixir, and the arcane, elysian and spectral sigils used to upgrade it.
Because it is tradeable, you can also buy it straight off the Grand Exchange — it usually costs around 100k coins, with the live price and history shown above. The buy limit is 8 every 4 hours.
Is the spirit shield worth it?
On its own the spirit shield is a budget-friendly defensive shield: good crush defence, no attack penalties, and a small +1 Prayer bonus, all at just 45 Defence and 55 Prayer. As pure defence it is roughly comparable to a rune kiteshield or obsidian shield rather than a clear upgrade, so most players value it for what it becomes, not what it is.
Its main purpose is as the foundation of the enhanced spirit shields. Using a holy elixir on it (85 Prayer) creates the blessed spirit shield, which can then have a sigil attached to make the arcane, elysian or spectral spirit shield. Note those passive effects — elysian's damage reduction, arcane's Magic boost, spectral's prayer-drain reduction — belong to the enhanced shields only; the base spirit shield has no passive effect.
