Best in slot gear for Aberrant Spectre (current meta)
This setup is computed live from the same wiki-sourced combat stats and monster data that power our OSRS DPS calculator — so it tracks the current meta instead of going stale. Pick your combat style above and it ranks every viable weapon and armour piece by damage per second against Aberrant Spectre, factoring in the boss's defences, size and any elemental weakness.

Aberrant Spectre Strategy Guide
Aberrant spectre Guide
Aberrant spectres are combat level 96 Slayer monsters that require level 60 Slayer to kill, plus completion of the Priest in Peril quest before they can be handed out as a Slayer task. They are aggressive, magic-using undead ghosts with 90 Hitpoints, examined in-game as "A very smelly ghost."
They are best known as a steady source of grimy herbs and herb seeds: each kill has a high chance of rolling the herb drop table, so most players bring a herb sack and seed box to make the most of the loot. The one rule that defines the fight is the smell: you must block your nose, or the spectre's stat-draining special attack will tear through your stats no matter what you do. This light guide covers the requirement, the gear style, and how to kill them efficiently.
Requirements & where to fight
To kill aberrant spectres on a Slayer task you need level 60 Slayer and completion of Priest in Peril. They are assigned by Vannaka, Chaeldar, Konar quo Maten, Nieve and Duradel. If you are assigned aberrant spectres but want a different setting, deviant spectres in the Catacombs of Kourend can be killed in their place.
There are three main spots to fight them, all containing level 96 spectres:
- Slayer Tower (1st floor) in Morytania — the one spot of the three where a dwarf multicannon cannot be placed, so this is the safespotting location.
- Stronghold Slayer Cave in Kandarin — a dwarf multicannon is allowed here, which the Wiki recommends for the fastest Slayer experience.
- Deepfin Mine, where a no-setup safespot exists near the easternmost torch by the nickel rocks; a dwarf multicannon can also be used here (in single-way combat).
Safespots exist in all three locations, but they only work with Ranged or Magic, because you need at least six tiles between you and the spectre to sit outside its attack range. Halberds and thrown weapons like throwing knives or axes do not reach far enough to safespot. Safespots also only work while the spectres are non-aggressive, since nearby aggressive spectres will attack you and break the trap.
The nose-peg requirement
This is the single most important thing about the fight. Wearing a nose peg or a Slayer helmet is required when fighting aberrant spectres. Without one, they use a special "smell" attack that always hits — even through Protection Prayers — and drains your combat stats extremely quickly, along with other stats. With your nose blocked, the spectre's maximum hit drops from 14 down to 8.
You cannot use boosts to equip the nose peg, so you need either real level 60 Slayer or a Slayer helmet to wear it. Because the Slayer helmet itself counts as nose protection, a Slayer helmet on task removes the need for a separate nose peg. Whatever else you wear, keep your nose blocked for the entire trip — the stat drain is unforgiving.
Recommended stats & gear
Aberrant spectres attack with Magic (attack speed 4), so the meta is to negate that damage. Use the Protect from Magic prayer, or wear magic-resistant armour such as dragonhide, to cut what they land on you.
Because spectres are undead, a salve amulet (or one of its variants) gives a damage and accuracy bonus and is the standout amulet for this task. Note the salve does not stack with a Slayer helmet's bonus when both are worn — only the salve effect applies — but you should still keep the Slayer helmet or nose peg on for nose protection regardless.
For your weapon and combat style, the choice is driven by your setting. In the Stronghold Slayer Cave, a cannon plus melee is the fastest route. When safespotting in the Slayer Tower or Deepfin Mine you need Ranged or Magic — a crossbow on rapid attack style can reach the trapped spectre from the safespot. Spectres have low Defence against most styles but a high Magic defence, and since the 2025 Summer Sweep Up they have a 50% elemental weakness to air spells and weakened standard Ranged defence, making air spells a strong option too. Inventory & supplies
This is a low-risk, loot-dense task, so the inventory is built around carrying loot more than survival:
- Herb sack and seed box — strongly recommended, because spectres frequently drop large numbers of grimy herbs and herb seeds and these store stacks of them.
- A few food items — with your nose blocked the spectre only hits up to 8, so you need little healing.
- Prayer potions if you intend to flick Protect from Magic for the whole trip.
- If you are cannoning in the Stronghold Slayer Cave, bring your dwarf multicannon and cannonballs.
Keep your nose peg or Slayer helmet equipped the entire time — it is not optional.
Strategy & kill rotation
The approach depends on where you fight:
- Fastest Slayer XP (Stronghold Slayer Cave): set up your dwarf multicannon, let it tick through the aggressive spectres, and clean up with melee. Keep your nose blocked and stay topped on Prayer if you are protecting from Magic.
- AFK / low-risk (safespotting): in the Slayer Tower, stand on the brick pile just west of the Agility chain shortcut and pull spectres in front of the suit of armour from the room to the south; a crossbow on rapid can hit them from there. In Deepfin Mine, use the easy safespot near the easternmost torch by the nickel rocks. Remember safespots only hold while spectres are non-aggressive, so wait out the roughly 10-minute hostility window first — in the Slayer Tower you can hide beside the table in the north-west corner with minimal risk.
However you kill them, the loop is the same: keep nose protection on, deal damage with your chosen style, and pick up the grimy herbs, seeds and coins. Bank with a full herb sack and seed box.
Notable drops
Aberrant spectres are valued for volume rather than rare uniques. Their signature loot is the herb drop table and rare seed drops — there is a 78/128 chance of rolling the herb table per kill, averaging just over one herb per kill, which is why a herb sack and seed box are recommended.
Beyond herbs and seeds, the marquee item drops are the Mystic robe bottom (dark) at 1/512 and the Lava battlestaff at 1/128. They also drop a steady stream of coins, the gem drop table, and tertiary rewards including a Brimstone key when killed on a Konar quo Maten task and an elite clue scroll step if you are carrying a qualifying elite cryptic clue. Use our GE price tracker to value the herbs and seeds you bank.
Common mistakes
- Fighting without nose protection. Without a nose peg or Slayer helmet, the spectre's smell special always hits — through prayer — and shreds your stats. This is the number-one trip-ender.
- Trying to boost into the nose peg. You cannot use stat boosts to equip the nose peg; you need genuine level 60 Slayer or a Slayer helmet.
- Stacking salve and Slayer helmet expecting both bonuses. Their effects do not stack — only the salve amulet applies when both are worn.
- Trying to safespot with a halberd or thrown weapon. Those do not have the six-tile reach needed; safespots require a Ranged weapon or Magic.
- Safespotting while spectres are aggressive. Nearby aggressive spectres break the trap — wait out the hostility window first.
- Skipping the herb sack and seed box. You will fill your inventory with grimy herbs and seeds fast and waste trips banking.
Aberrant spectre Guide — FAQ
What level Slayer do I need to kill aberrant spectres?
You need level 60 Slayer, and you must have completed the Priest in Peril quest before they can be assigned as a task.
Do I really need a nose peg or Slayer helmet?
Yes. A nose peg or Slayer helmet is required. Without one, the spectre uses a smell special attack that always hits — even through Protection Prayers — and drains your combat and other stats very quickly. With your nose blocked, their max hit also drops from 14 to 8.
Which prayer should I use against aberrant spectres?
They attack with Magic, so Protect from Magic is the prayer to use. Wearing dragonhide armour is also helpful as magic-resistant gear. Note that prayer does not block the smell special — only nose protection does.
Can I use a cannon?
Yes — a dwarf multicannon works in the Stronghold Slayer Cave and in Deepfin Mine. The only spot of the three where a cannon cannot be set up is the Slayer Tower. The Wiki recommends cannoning in the Stronghold Slayer Cave for the fastest Slayer experience. For exact gear, check the Boss Gear Finder above.
