Ancient Wyvern Guide

The Ancient Wyvern is the strongest species of Wyvern in Old School RuneScape, a combat level 210 Slayer monster that resides in the Wyvern Cave on Fossil Island. Released with the Fossil Island update on 7 September 2017, it sits behind a hard requirement of 82 Slayer and completion of the Bone Voyage quest before it can be assigned or harmed.

Players fight Ancient Wyverns mainly for steady, profitable Slayer kills: every wyvern drops Wyvern bones, and the cave seeds a long drop table that includes the rare Granite longsword, Granite boots and the coveted Wyvern visage. The defining wrinkle is its icy breath – an attack so devastating you cannot even step into the cave to fight without an anti-breath shield equipped.

Requirements & where to fight

Ancient Wyverns require 82 Slayer to deal damage, and you must have completed the Bone Voyage quest for them to be assigned as a Slayer task. Tasks are handed out by Chaeldar, Konar, Nieve and Duradel. They are a Slayer monster, so a task is needed for the dedicated cave – if you try to attack them in the task-only area without a Fossil Island wyvern task, Weve (Steve's son) will stop you.

One niche workaround exists: per the strategy guide, eating a wild pie boosts Slayer enough to harm them at 77 Slayer, though kills will be extremely long, so it is rarely worth it.

They live in the Wyvern Cave on Fossil Island. The fastest route is the Digsite pendant used on the strange machine at the House on the Hill to teleport directly to Fossil Island, then run south-east to the cave entrance. For Slayer tasks, the Magic Mushtree (Mycelium Transportation System) next to the House on the Hill teleport drops you just north of the task-only cave under the Mushroom Meadow. The task-only entrance is a trapdoor in the Mushroom Forest; the regular entrance is south of the Museum Camp.

The icy breath – the shield you must bring

Before anything else: you must equip an anti-breath shield to fight Ancient Wyverns at all. Like other Wyverns, they require an elemental shield, mind shield, dragonfire ward, dragonfire shield or ancient wyvern shield to be equipped, or you will suffer devastating damage from their icy breath. Without one, the icy breath max hit is 44; with an elemental shield equipped it drops to 10.

There is an important catch the sources are explicit about: the ancient wyvern shield is the only shield that grants immunity to the freezing effect of the icy breath. The dragonfire shield, mind shield or elemental shield will reduce the damage, but you will occasionally still become frozen. And the regular Anti-dragon shield does NOT work here – do not bring it by mistake.

Fight mechanics

Ancient Wyverns have 300 Hitpoints and very high Attack, Strength and Defence (150 each), which is what makes them tanky, drawn-out kills. They use three distinct attacks:

  • Slash melee (max hit 16) – their standard melee swipe. Counter it with Protect from Melee, which negates the bulk of their damage.
  • Typeless Magic attack (max hit 10) – a magic attack that resembles a lighter-coloured Water Blast. Crucially it ignores Protection prayers, so it cannot be prayed against; it can also miss. This chip damage is why you bring food even with Protect from Melee up.
  • Icy breath (max hit 44, or 10 with a shield equipped) – the signature attack, handled entirely by the anti-breath shield described above rather than by a prayer.

Their Defence stats matter for gear choice: they are weakest to stab (50 defence) and have a 35% elemental weakness to Air spells, but defend heavily against Magic (170). Note that historical stat changes in the wiki's Changes log (such as the old combat level 227 and Defence 220) are not current values.

Recommended stats, gear & supplies

The strategy guide suggests around 80+ Attack, Strength, Defence and Hitpoints, with 43+ Prayer (for Protect from Melee, plus optional Piety at 70+). Higher is always better given how tanky these are.

Melee is the meta and the most profitable style. The approach is to tank the wyverns: maximise your ranged Defence (because their typeless magic hit comes through prayer) using high-defence melee armour families like Barrows, Bandos or Justiciar, keep Protect from Melee on, and hit them with a strong stab weapon. Ranged and Magic are listed as viable alternatives if you prefer, but the sources note melee is much more profitable, and ranged gives slower kills. Whichever style you pick, one of the anti-breath shields above is mandatory in the shield slot.

For exact best-in-slot picks tuned to your stats and budget, use our Boss Gear Finder above rather than copying a fixed list.

Supplies (per the strategy guide): a Divine super combat potion, 3–4 prayer potions, sharks or better for food, an optional emergency teleport, and an optional herb sack and bonecrusher (handy if you are not selling the wyvern bones). At least one prayer potion is needed for Protect from Melee, and more if you run accuracy-boosting prayers like Piety – the wyvern bones you collect easily pay for them.

Notable drops

With no separate drop table built here, the headline drops come straight from the wiki. Every kill yields Wyvern bones (always). The marquee uniques are the Granite longsword at 1/600, the Granite boots at 1/600, and the prized Wyvern visage at 1/10000. Konar tasks can also drop a Brimstone key, and the cave feeds herbs, seeds, runes and the rare drop table. Sell or bury the bones to fund your prayer potions.

Common mistakes

  • Bringing an Anti-dragon shield. It does not protect against the icy breath – only the elemental, mind, dragonfire, dragonfire ward or ancient wyvern shield will.
  • Assuming any anti-breath shield makes you immune to freezing. Only the ancient wyvern shield grants freeze immunity; with the others you will occasionally still get frozen.
  • Trying to pray against everything. The typeless magic attack ignores Protection prayers, so you will always take some chip damage – bring food and do not panic when Protect from Melee does not stop it.
  • Forgetting the quest gate. 82 Slayer alone is not enough; Bone Voyage must be completed for the task to be assigned.

Ancient Wyvern Guide — FAQ

What level do I need to kill Ancient Wyverns?

You need 82 Slayer to deal damage to them, and you must have completed the Bone Voyage quest for them to be assigned as a Slayer task. The strategy guide notes a wild pie can boost you to harm them at 77 Slayer, but kills will be extremely long.

Do I really need a special shield?

Yes. You must equip an elemental shield, mind shield, dragonfire ward, dragonfire shield or ancient wyvern shield or their icy breath will hit devastatingly hard (up to 44). The regular Anti-dragon shield does not work. Only the ancient wyvern shield also makes you immune to the freezing effect.

What is the best combat style for Ancient Wyverns?

Melee is the meta and the most profitable. You tank them by maximising ranged Defence with armour families like Barrows, Bandos or Justiciar while praying Protect from Melee. Magic and Ranged work but give slower or less profitable kills.

What are the rare drops worth chasing?

The marquee uniques are the Granite longsword and Granite boots, each at 1/600, and the Wyvern visage at 1/10000. Every kill also drops Wyvern bones.
