Best in slot gear for Basilisk Sentinel (current meta)
This setup is computed live from the same wiki-sourced combat stats and monster data that power our OSRS DPS calculator — so it tracks the current meta instead of going stale. Pick your combat style above and it ranks every viable weapon and armour piece by damage per second against Basilisk Sentinel, factoring in the boss's defences, size and any elemental weakness.
Not at maxed stats? Lower any level on the left and the recommendation re-ranks instantly — requirement-gated gear drops out automatically. For the full ranked list per slot, open the BiS calculator; to pit two specific items against each other, use Gear Compare.
Basilisk Sentinel Strategy Guide
Basilisk Sentinel Guide
The Basilisk Sentinel is a Slayer-only boss-tier monster: a superior variant of the basilisk knight with a combat level of 358 and 520 Hitpoints. It does not spawn from a normal task by default — you only have a chance of it appearing after buying the Bigger and Badder unlock for 50 Slayer reward points from any Slayer master, and only while on a basilisk Slayer task.
It is killed for its superior-tier rewards, most notably the Basilisk jaw (a 1/1000 unique drop). Like the standard basilisk knight, you must bring a mirror shield or V's shield to fight it safely — without one you take rapid damage and your stats are drained.
Requirements & where to fight
To fight the Basilisk Sentinel you need 60 Slayer — the same requirement as the regular basilisk and basilisk knight. It is fought wherever you would fight basilisks while on a basilisk Slayer task; the Sentinel is a superior monster, so it can only randomly replace a regular basilisk spawn during such a task.
Critically, the Sentinel only appears once you own the Bigger and Badder unlock, purchased for 50 Slayer reward points from any Slayer master. Without that unlock, superior monsters never spawn. Basilisk tasks can be assigned by Vannaka, Chaeldar, Konar, Nieve, or Duradel.
You must bring a mirror shield or V's shield. As with the basilisk knight, this shield is required to safely engage the Sentinel — otherwise you take rapid damage and have your combat stats drained, exactly as the standard variant does.
Recommended stats & gear
The Sentinel has a 40% elemental weakness to earth spells, so a Magic setup using earth spells (or a weapon that channels them) is the on-style choice. That said, the hard constraint is the shield slot: a mirror shield or V's shield is mandatory and occupies your off-hand, so plan your loadout around keeping it equipped at all times.
Defensively the Sentinel has only 10 defence against crush versus 50 against stab, slash, and magic, so crush is the style it resists least — if you go melee, a crush weapon lands best. Its earth-magic weakness still makes earth Magic the strongest on-style choice overall. For the exact best-in-slot pieces for your levels and budget, use our Boss Gear Finder above rather than copying a fixed list, and check live prices on the GE price tracker before you buy.
Inventory & supplies
The single non-negotiable item is the mirror shield or V's shield — do not enter the fight without it, or your stats will be drained and you will take rapid damage. Beyond that, because the special attack can deal a large amount of damage if you are entombed and fail to break free, bring enough food to survive a botched special. The Sentinel is aggressive, so expect it to attack on sight; it is not poisonous, so no anti-poison is needed.
Fight mechanics
The Basilisk Sentinel has three things to handle: its standard attacks, the gaze that the shield blocks, and a dangerous special attack.
Standard attacks (Magic and Melee, max hit 28). The Sentinel attacks with both Magic and Melee on a 4-tick attack speed, hitting up to 28 on a normal attack. Stay on top of your food while trading blows.
The basilisk gaze. As a basilisk-type monster, an unshielded player takes rapid damage and stat drain. Keeping the mirror shield or V's shield equipped neutralises this entirely — it is the whole reason the shield is required.
Special attack (the stone orb, max hit 74+). The Sentinel shoots a slower, pale-red orb at the tile you are standing on. If you do not move, it encases you in stone, stopping you from attacking for a few seconds ("You have been entombed in stone!"). You can dodge it entirely while the orb is in flight by moving one square away. If you are caught, spam-click away to break free — it takes four attempts before you escape ("You manage to escape from the stone!"). Failing to break out in time causes the stone to explode for a large hit ("The stone around you violently explodes!"), which can deal 74+ and instantly kill players with moderate Hitpoints. The special has roughly a 30-second cooldown from the first attack and is not guaranteed to fire immediately off cooldown. Note that since 2021 it cannot be countered with Auto Retaliate — you must move manually.
Strategy & kill rotation
The kill loop is simple once the shield rule is internalised: keep your mirror shield or V's shield equipped the entire fight, attack on your chosen style (earth Magic exploits the 40% weakness), and watch for the pale-red special-attack orb. The moment you see it, step one tile off your current square to avoid being entombed entirely. If you are caught anyway, spam-click to break out over the four attempts before the stone explodes. Eat ahead of the special rather than after it — the explosion can outright kill you if your Hitpoints are low when it lands. Because safespotting no longer works against the Sentinel, you will be in melee/magic range throughout, so prioritise reacting to the special over maximising DPS.
Notable drops
The marquee reward is the Basilisk jaw, dropped at 1/1000. This is the headline unique players hunt the Sentinel for. The Sentinel can also drop the Basilisk head (1/1000) and the Mystic hat (light) (1/256). As a superior monster killed on a Konar task it always drops a Brimstone key, and it always drops Big bones. Beyond the uniques it rolls weapon and armour pieces (rune and adamant), rune drops, herbs, and gems. See the full drop table for exact rates and quantities.
Common mistakes
- Fighting without the shield. No mirror shield or V's shield means rapid damage and drained stats — this is the number-one way players die here.
- Standing still during the special. The pale-red orb entombs you if you don't move one square; the resulting explosion (74+) can be an instant kill at moderate Hitpoints.
- Relying on Auto Retaliate to dodge. Since 2021 the special can no longer be counteracted with Auto Retaliate — you must move manually.
- Expecting to safespot. Safespotting no longer works against the Sentinel, so you can't kite it from a corner.
- Forgetting the Bigger and Badder unlock. Without the 50-point Slayer unlock, the Sentinel never spawns in the first place.
Basilisk Sentinel Guide — FAQ
What Slayer level do I need to fight the Basilisk Sentinel?
You need 60 Slayer, and you must be on a basilisk Slayer task. You also need the Bigger and Badder unlock (50 Slayer reward points) for it to spawn at all.
Do I really need a mirror shield?
Yes. A mirror shield or V's shield is required to safely engage the Sentinel, just like the regular basilisk knight. Without one you take rapid damage and have your stats drained.
How do I avoid the special attack?
The Sentinel shoots a slow, pale-red orb at your tile. Move one square away while it's in flight to dodge it entirely. If you get entombed, spam-click away — it takes four attempts to break free before the stone explodes for 74+.
What is the Basilisk Sentinel's best drop?
The Basilisk jaw (1/1000), its headline superior-tier unique. The Sentinel can also drop the Basilisk head (1/1000) and Mystic hat (light) (1/256).
