Best in slot gear for Colossal Hydra (current meta)
This setup is computed live from the same wiki-sourced combat stats and monster data that power our OSRS DPS calculator — so it tracks the current meta instead of going stale. Pick your combat style above and it ranks every viable weapon and armour piece by damage per second against Colossal Hydra, factoring in the boss's defences, size and any elemental weakness.

Colossal Hydra Strategy Guide
Colossal Hydra Guide
The Colossal Hydra is a superior variant of the regular Slayer monster, the hydra. It is a combat level 309 members' monster with 750 Hitpoints, and it can only be fought while on a Hydra Slayer task. Like its standard counterpart, it alternates between Ranged and Magic attacks every three hits, but instead of spitting poison it has a dangerous lightning special attack borrowed from the Alchemical Hydra.
Because it is a superior creature, the Colossal Hydra only appears after you purchase the Bigger and Badder unlock for 50 Slayer reward points from any Slayer master, and even then it only spawns occasionally in place of a normal hydra. It rewards 8,625 Slayer experience on death and rolls extra loot, including a shot at the same valuable uniques the Alchemical Hydra can drop.
Requirements & where to fight
To fight the Colossal Hydra at all you need 95 Slayer, the same level required to attack a standard hydra. You also need to be assigned a Hydra task and to have bought the Bigger and Badder Slayer unlock (50 Slayer reward points) so that superior monsters can spawn. The Colossal Hydra is flagged as a monster that can only be fought on task and one that takes priority in combat once it appears.
While killing your regular hydras, a Colossal Hydra will sometimes spawn in place of one of them. Konar is listed as the master who assigns hydras for this superior spawn, and a Konar task is also what unlocks the guaranteed Brimstone key drop.
Recommended stats & gear
The Colossal Hydra is overwhelmingly a Ranged boss. Its defence against light, standard and heavy ranged ammo is just 20, compared with 100 against stab and 200 against slash, crush and Magic. In other words, ranged attacks slip through far more easily than melee or magic, so the meta is to bring your best ranged setup and lean on the Ranged skill rather than trying to melee it.
Build around a strong crossbow or bow with high-accuracy bolts or arrows, a full ranged armour set for the damage-and-defence bonuses, and gear that frees up a prayer switch. Because you will be flicking protection prayers constantly, a high Prayer level and prayer-saving items help a lot. For the exact best-in-slot pieces at your stats and budget, use our Boss Gear Finder above rather than guessing — it ranks gear specifically for this fight.
Inventory & supplies
The page does not list a fixed inventory, but the fight itself dictates what matters. The Colossal Hydra is immune to poison and venom (both resistances are listed at 100), so weapons that rely on venom or poison damage are wasted here and you should not bother bringing them for the boss.
Beyond that, bring the usual high-level Slayer supplies: food, a way to restore Prayer, and stat-boosting potions appropriate to your ranged setup. Fittingly, the Colossal Hydra itself can drop Super restore and Super combat potion as loot, so it tops up some of what you spend.
Fight mechanics
Alternating Ranged and Magic. The Colossal Hydra switches its attack style every three attacks — three Ranged hits, then three Magic hits, and so on. You counter this by switching between Protect from Missiles and Protect from Magic to block whichever style is currently active. Both of its standard attacks fire on a 6-tick attack speed.
Lightning special attack. Instead of the poison special the normal hydra uses, the Colossal Hydra fires a ball of electricity (like the Alchemical Hydra's lightning) after every five standard attacks. The ball splits into two lightning currents that chase you for a short time, dealing moderate damage of up to about 18 and paralysing you for 4 ticks (2.4 seconds) if a current catches you. Keep moving to avoid the currents. Its overall max hit is 34.
Prayer-switch timing trap. The special attack fires on a five-attack cycle while the Ranged/Magic switch happens on a three-attack cycle, so the two timers do not line up. This means the moment you need to dodge lightning will not always match the moment you need to flip your protection prayer, and it is easy to get caught praying against the wrong style. Pay close attention when both events overlap.
Strategy
Treat the Colossal Hydra as a high-pressure version of a normal hydra kill. Because it spawns mid-task and takes priority in combat, you usually transition straight from a regular hydra into the superior fight. Keep up your ranged DPS into its low ranged defence, and use Protect from Missiles or Protect from Magic in line with its three-attack style rotation.
The discipline that wins the fight is tracking two clocks at once: the three-attack style switch and the five-attack special. Count attacks so you know when the lightning is coming, step away from the splitting currents when it fires, and resume praying against the correct style immediately afterwards. Avoid standing still during the special, and remember that since it cannot poison or venom you, all of your survival concern goes into prayer-flicking and dodging rather than antivenom management.
Notable drops
As a superior slayer creature the Colossal Hydra rolls extra loot on top of the normal hydra table — it always rolls three additional items, of which at most one can come from the superior unique table. Its standout uniques are the three Alchemical Hydra crafting parts: the Hydra's eye, Hydra's fang and Hydra's heart, each at a rate of 1/360.72 and received in that order. It can also drop the Hydra tail at 1/1001, plus rarer Dragon thrownaxe and Dragon knife stacks.
On top of those, it guarantees Hydra bones every kill and a Brimstone key when killed on a Konar task, and it can roll clue scrolls, runes, herbs and gems. The full drop table and exact rates are shown above — and you can check current prices for any of these on our GE price tracker.
Common mistakes
Treating it like a melee or magic boss. Its slash, crush and Magic defences are 200 and its stab defence is 100, but its ranged defence is only 20. Bringing a melee or magic setup throws away most of your damage; ranged is the correct style.
Bringing poison or venom weapons. The Colossal Hydra is fully immune to both, so any setup that depends on poison or venom damage loses that part of its output. Plan your gear around raw ranged damage instead.
Letting the two timers desync your prayer. The biggest killer is praying against the wrong style because the five-attack special knocked your attack count out of rhythm with the three-attack style switch. Keep counting through the special so you flip back to the right protection prayer.
Standing still in the lightning. The currents chase you and paralyse you for 2.4 seconds if they connect, which can chain into more damage. Keep repositioning when the special fires.
Colossal Hydra Guide — FAQ
What Slayer level do I need for the Colossal Hydra?
You need 95 Slayer, the same as a regular hydra. You also need the Bigger and Badder Slayer unlock (50 reward points) for the superior spawn, and you must be on a Hydra task — the Colossal Hydra can only be fought on task.
What is the best combat style against the Colossal Hydra?
Ranged. Its ranged defence is only 20 versus 100 against stab and 200 against slash, crush and Magic, so ranged attacks land far more reliably. Use our Boss Gear Finder to pick the best ranged gear for your stats.
How does the lightning special attack work?
After every five standard attacks it fires a ball of electricity that splits into two lightning currents which chase you. They deal up to about 18 damage and paralyse you for 4 ticks (2.4 seconds) if they catch you, so keep moving until they fade.
Can the Colossal Hydra poison or venom me?
No. It is immune to both poison and venom and, unlike the normal hydra, it does not spit poison — its dangerous special is the lightning attack instead. You do not need antivenom for the boss itself.
What are the best drops from the Colossal Hydra?
The marquee uniques are the Hydra's eye, Hydra's fang and Hydra's heart (each 1/360.72) used in Alchemical Hydra gear, plus the Hydra tail at 1/1001. It also guarantees Hydra bones and, on a Konar task, a Brimstone key.
