Best in slot gear for Galvek (current meta)
This setup is computed live from the same wiki-sourced combat stats and monster data that power our OSRS DPS calculator — so it tracks the current meta instead of going stale. Pick your combat style above and it ranks every viable weapon and armour piece by damage per second against Galvek, factoring in the boss's defences, size and any elemental weakness.

Galvek Strategy Guide
Galvek Guide
Galvek is the final boss of the Dragon Slayer II quest — a serpent-like dragon incubated by the Dragonkin Zorgoth to destroy humanity. For most players this is a one-time encounter you clear to finish the quest, not a repeatable loot grind. He is a combat level 608 members boss with 1,200 Hitpoints split across four elemental phases of 300 each, and he attacks with Slash, Ranged, Magic and Dragonfire. The fight is a sharp difficulty spike for a quest, mixing Vorkath-style one-hit dragonfire bombs with phase-specific gimmicks, so it pays to prepare properly.
This guide explains where the fight happens, the gear and supplies that carry it, and how to survive each of the four phases. Because Galvek is a quest boss, he drops nothing — the reward is quest completion. After the quest you can re-fight him safely through the Pool of Dreams in the Myths' Guild if you want to practice or chase a fast kill time.
Overview & where you fight him
Galvek is fought at the climax of Dragon Slayer II, on the deck of a ship during the quest's final battle. He is a members boss at combat level 608, sized 7 tiles, and he is aggressive. The encounter is a single continuous fight across four phases rather than a wave or instance you farm.
After you finish the quest, Galvek can be fought again through the Pool of Dreams in the Myths' Guild. Deaths in that instance are safe — win or lose, you are returned outside the pool — and the nearby Dream List tracks your kill count and fastest time. Treat the main quest attempt as the one that matters and the Pool of Dreams as low-pressure practice. Brushing up on combat fundamentals via our OSRS guides before attempting the quest pays off here.
Requirements & recommended stats
The hard requirement is simply being far enough into Dragon Slayer II to reach the final battle. Beyond that, Galvek punishes weak combat stats and poor supplies more than it punishes a missing item. Higher Hitpoints give you the buffer to survive a mistimed phase transition, and solid offensive stats shorten the fight so you face fewer of his one-hit specials.
Galvek's stats: 632 Attack, 268 Strength, 188 Defence, 160 Magic and 246 Ranged. His defensive bonuses are highest against Magic (+280) and notably lower against stab (+80), so a strong melee or Ranged setup chews through him. His attack speed is 6, and his per-hit max is 28 with Ranged, Slash or Magic; his dragonfire hits up to 121 unmitigated, which is exactly why the antifire combo (see Mechanics) is non-negotiable.
Recommended gear & supplies
The non-negotiable items are antifire protection: a super antifire potion combined with an anti-dragon shield reduces his normal orange and pink dragonfire to 0 damage. With only the shield, or only an antifire potion, you still take chip damage on a failed accuracy roll, so bring both. Note these do not stop his special one-hit fireball — nothing does except moving.
For your attack style, Galvek is weakest to stab and is generally taken on with a strong melee or Ranged setup; lean on your best melee gear or ranged gear rather than Magic, which his +280 Magic defence resists. For the exact best-in-slot loadout at your stats and budget, use our Boss Gear Finder above. On supplies, prioritise plenty of food, your antifire potion, and prayer restoration — a long four-phase fight drains both. Refresh your defensive prayers with our Prayer guide if you are unsure which to flick.
Fight mechanics
Galvek has 1,200 Hitpoints across four phases of 300 each, and uses all three combat styles. A few rules apply throughout the fight:
- Pull attack: if you are outside melee range, he may use a blue attack that pulls you closer to him.
- Defence reset: Defence-lowering attacks work on Galvek, but his Defence resets to its original level after every phase.
- Restrictions: Thralls cannot be summoned during the fight, and he is immune to reflect damage.
Dragonfire Bomb (the one-hit special): like Vorkath, Galvek throws a dragonfire ball into the air that lands on the tile you were standing on when he fired. It will instantly kill you if you do not move away; standing next to it still deals 50% as much damage. Antifire effects do not work against this attack — your only defence is movement.
Normal dragonfire: he also uses two ordinary dragonfire types — an orange variant and a pink variant that disables your prayers on impact. The super-antifire-plus-anti-dragon-shield combo nullifies both.
The four phases
Phase I (Fire): Galvek stands at the bow and attacks with Melee and Magic. He occasionally launches fire bombs that cover a 3x3 area; touching one deals an enormous hit that will very likely instantly kill you. The bombs always appear in the same positions and explode after a set time or if you move within one tile of them. This is a common phase to die in, because players panic-move to dodge his fireball special — or get teleported — and run straight into a bomb.
Phase II (Air): he flies to the western side of the ship and starts using Ranged attacks, mixing Ranged and Magic at random. He can launch gusts of wind that drain your stats by 2 and your run energy by 40%. He still uses the one-hit fireball here.
Phase III (Water): he flies to the eastern side and sends out tsunamis that hit for 70–120 damage (per Mod Ash), alongside the standard fireball special. This is potentially his deadliest phase — a tsunami plus an active fireball leaves almost no safe tiles. He also uses Ranged much more often here.
Phase IV (Earth): he lands in the middle of the ship and launches earth projectiles that bind you for several seconds. The bind deals no damage itself, but it leaves you wide open to his dragonfire, which he almost always follows up with. Avoid the rocks by simply moving one square; circling around him, or pacing back and forth on the north or south end, dodges both the rocks and the dragonfire.
Strategy & common mistakes
Rotation: keep your super antifire active at all times so his normal dragonfire is neutralised, watch constantly for the fireball special and move off your tile the instant he fires it, and chip his 300 HP per phase down with your strongest stab or Ranged attacks. Remember his Defence resets each phase, so don't over-invest in stacking Defence reductions. Re-flick prayers after any pink dragonfire hit disables them.
Common mistakes that end runs:
- Standing in a fire bomb in Phase I while dodging the fireball — know the bomb positions before you start moving.
- Failing to move off the fireball special — it is a guaranteed kill, and antifire does nothing against it.
- Getting bound in Phase IV and eating the follow-up dragonfire — keep moving so the earth attack misses.
- Letting your antifire lapse — without it, his orange and pink dragonfire chip away while you are busy dodging.
Galvek Guide — FAQ
What level do I need to fight Galvek?
There is no separate combat-level requirement — you reach Galvek as the final boss of the Dragon Slayer II quest. He himself is combat level 608, so come with strong combat stats, full antifire protection and plenty of supplies rather than relying on a stat gate.
What is Galvek weak to?
Galvek's elemental weakness is Water, including a 40% weakness to water spells added on 25 June 2025. In terms of defensive stats he is weakest to stab (+80 defence) and most resistant to Magic (+280), so a strong melee or Ranged setup is the practical choice over magic.
How do I avoid his one-hit dragonfire attack?
Move. The Dragonfire Bomb lands on the tile you were standing on when he fired it and instantly kills you if you stay; standing adjacent still takes 50% damage. Antifire potions and the anti-dragon shield do not protect against this special — only stepping away does.
Does Galvek drop anything?
No. Galvek is a quest boss, so there is no loot table — the reward is completing Dragon Slayer II. After the quest you can re-fight him through the Pool of Dreams in the Myths' Guild, where deaths are safe and a Dream List tracks your kill count and fastest time.
