Best in slot gear for Nechryael (current meta)
This setup is computed live from the same wiki-sourced combat stats and monster data that power our OSRS DPS calculator — so it tracks the current meta instead of going stale. Pick your combat style above and it ranks every viable weapon and armour piece by damage per second against Nechryael, factoring in the boss's defences, size and any elemental weakness.
Not at maxed stats? Lower any level on the left and the recommendation re-ranks instantly — requirement-gated gear drops out automatically. For the full ranked list per slot, open the BiS calculator; to pit two specific items against each other, use Gear Compare.
Nechryael Strategy Guide
Nechryael Guide
Nechryael are demonic Slayer creatures that require a Slayer level of 80 to harm. They sit at combat level 115 with 105 Hitpoints, and they are best known for their rune boots drop, one of the few boots in the game to give a Strength bonus when worn. They are also a reliable source of seeds and combat runes.
The normal Nechryael lives in the Slayer Tower and the Charred Dungeon. Its tougher cousin, the Greater nechryael, is found in the Catacombs of Kourend, the Iorwerth Dungeon, and the Wilderness Slayer Cave. The signature mechanic to plan around is the death spawn: the Nechryael summons little demons that can hit through Protect from Melee, so the fight is as much about supply efficiency as it is about raw damage. This guide covers the requirements, the gear style, the death-spawn mechanic, and the loot.
Requirements & where to fight
Nechryael can only be damaged with a Slayer level of 80. They are assigned by Krystilia, Vannaka, Chaeldar, Konar quo Maten, Nieve, and Duradel, so most mid-to-late-game Slayer masters can hand them out. Each kill gives 105 Slayer experience.
The normal variant spawns in the Slayer Tower (Basement and Top Floor) and the Charred Dungeon. One important catch: the Nechryael in the Slayer Tower Basement can only be attacked while you are on a Slayer task. The stronger Greater nechryael is a separate creature found in the Catacombs of Kourend, the Iorwerth Dungeon, and the Wilderness Slayer Cave, and it is the more common target for high-value Slayer trips.
Recommended stats & gear
Nechryael attack with Crush, so the fight is short and forgiving if your defence is reasonable. Their defence is even across the melee and ranged styles (a defensive bonus of 20 against stab, slash, crush, light and standard ranged) but they have no magic defence at all, which makes magic the standout weakness — this is why Greater nechryael are usually farmed with Ice spells. Against the normal variant, fast melee is the everyday choice; against demons, Emberlight is highlighted on the Wiki as very effective because Nechryael count as demonic creatures.
For melee trips, build around accuracy and fast kills with the strongest melee gear you can afford; if you prefer the magic route on Greaters, slot your best magic gear instead. Rather than list exact best-in-slot items here, use our Boss Gear Finder above to get a loadout matched to your stats and budget. Because they attack with Crush and never max above 11, you do not need top-tier defensive gear to survive — accuracy and damage matter far more than tank stats here, and a Strength bonus from those coveted rune boots feeds straight back into faster kills.
Inventory & supplies
Because Nechryael only max 11 and the death spawns only max 2, sustained trips lean on efficiency rather than heavy healing. Bring food sized to your defence, prayer potions if you intend to pray against the main demon, and runes or a teleport for your return trip. The bigger drain on your time is the death spawns, not damage taken, so prioritise gear and a weapon that let you clear both the Nechryael and its spawns quickly. The Wiki does not prescribe a fixed supply list for this monster, so scale food and potions to your own stats and the location you choose.
Fight mechanics: the death spawn
The defining mechanic is the death spawn. A Nechryael can summon these small demons to aid it, up to a limit of two each per Nechryael. Death spawns have semi-inaccurate attacks with a max hit of 2, and crucially their attacks hit through Protect from Melee — so a prayer that blocks the main demon will not stop chip damage from the spawns.
Auto-retaliate does not work on death spawns, so you have to manually click each spawn to kill it. There are two useful levers: spawns will not be summoned if the Nechryael cannot attack you back (for example when it is safespotted), and the spawns will stop attacking any player who moves more than 7 tiles away from them. In the Slayer Tower, the many tables and buckets can be used to safespot Nechryael, which prevents the summons entirely.
Strategy / kill rotation
Two clean approaches exist. First, the fast-kill method: stack accuracy and damage, ignore or quickly cleave the death spawns, and tank their small hits while you burn the Nechryael down. This is the standard high-XP-per-hour route for players with strong gear. Second, the safespot method using the Slayer Tower's tables and buckets: position so the Nechryael cannot reach you, which means it never summons death spawns at all — slower per kill but very low supply cost. For Greater nechryael in the Catacombs of Kourend, the meta switches to magic: the Wiki notes they are more commonly killed with Ice Burst or Ice Barrage, freezing groups for AoE damage. Notable drops
The marquee drop is rune boots, one of the few boots that grants a Strength bonus, at a rate of 1/116. Every kill drops malicious ashes. Beyond that, Nechryael are valued as a steady source of seeds (the rare seed table plus a limpwurt seed) and combat runes (chaos, death, law and blood runes). On a Konar task you can also receive a Brimstone key. The full drop table with exact rates is shown above — this section just names the loot worth caring about.
Common mistakes
- Praying Protect from Melee and assuming you are safe. Death spawn attacks hit through it, so you will still take chip damage and may underbring food.
- Waiting for auto-retaliate on spawns. It does not trigger on death spawns — you must click each one manually.
- Attacking Basement Nechryael off-task. The Slayer Tower Basement Nechryael can only be attacked while on a Slayer task.
- Confusing the variants. Greater nechryael in the Catacombs are a separate, stronger creature with a different optimal style (magic), not the same fight as the Slayer Tower normals.
Nechryael Guide — FAQ
What Slayer level do I need for Nechryael?
You need Slayer level 80 to harm Nechryael. Below that they cannot be damaged at all. See our Slayer guide for how to get there.
What are death spawns and how do I deal with them?
Death spawns are small demons the Nechryael summons, up to two per Nechryael, with a max hit of 2. Their attacks hit through Protect from Melee and they do not trigger auto-retaliate, so you must click each one to kill it. Safespotting the Nechryael prevents them being summoned at all.
What is Nechryael's weakness?
They have a defensive bonus of 20 against the melee and ranged styles but zero magic defence, making magic their clear weakness. As demons they are also vulnerable to Emberlight. Greater nechryael are most commonly killed with Ice Burst or Ice Barrage.
What is the best drop from Nechryael?
The standout is rune boots at 1/116 — one of the few boots that gives a Strength bonus. They also drop malicious ashes every kill plus a steady supply of seeds and combat runes.
