Nylocas Vasilias Strategy Guide
Nylocas Vasilias Guide
Nylocas Vasilias is the third encounter in the Theatre of Blood, and it spawns only after your team has cleared the hordes of Nylocas Hagios, Nylocas Ischyros and Nylocas Toxobolos that flood the room before it. It is one of Verzik's pets, and the fight is built entirely around one mechanic: the boss constantly changes its carapace colour, and that colour tells you which combat style you must answer it with. Get the style right and you damage it; get it wrong and it reflects the hit straight back at you while healing itself.
Vasilias is aggressive and a members-only encounter. Its combat level is 800 in normal and hard mode (301 in Entry Mode), and it is the colour-switching wall that separates a clean Theatre raid from a wipe. Because it forces fast prayer and gear swaps under pressure, it rewards players who already have solid Ranged, Magic and melee foundations and a tidy inventory.
Requirements & where to fight
Nylocas Vasilias is fought inside the Theatre of Blood as the encounter's third room. You do not travel to it directly; it appears once the preceding Nylocas hordes (Hagios, Ischyros and Toxobolos) have been killed off in the same room. The Theatre is members-only content, so a members account is required.
There are three difficulties. Entry Mode is the most forgiving training version, while normal and Hard Mode raise the boss's damage and add extra spread mechanics. In Entry Mode all of the nylocas in the encounter can scale down to 20% of their original Hitpoints in a solo party, but you still have to kill the same number of nylocas in the hordes, so an unprepared solo player can still be overwhelmed. The room is failed if all four pillars fall.
Recommended stats & gear
Vasilias is unique among bosses because you need all three combat styles ready at once in the same fight. The meta is to bring a melee setup, a ranged setup and a magic setup and swap between them on every colour change. That means strong stats across the board rather than a single specialism, so shore up your Attack, Strength, Ranged and Magic before attempting it. For reference, the boss itself has 2,500 Hitpoints in normal and hard mode (1,440 in Entry Mode), and its maximum hit is 70 in normal mode, 105 in hard mode and 24 in Entry Mode.
Key item families are a strong melee weapon, a strong ranged weapon, and a powerful magic weapon. Vasilias also has a 15% elemental weakness to fire spells, so fire-based magic is the strongest option for its magic phase. For the exact best-in-slot loadout for each of the three styles, use our Boss Gear Finder above rather than guessing at individual pieces — and cross-check the three style families on the melee, ranged and magic gear pages.
Inventory & supplies
The hard part of Vasilias is not the supplies, it is managing three gear sets and the prayer swaps that go with them. Plan your inventory so each weapon swap is in a predictable slot and you never fumble during a colour change. Bring the food and brews your Theatre run normally uses for this point in the raid, plus a way to restore prayer, since you will be flicking offensive prayers and (in hard mode) protection prayers constantly. Keep your Prayer level high enough to run the strongest offensive prayer for each style. Note that Vasilias has 100% poison resistance and 100% venom resistance, so poison and venom weapons do nothing here — do not waste inventory space on them.
Fight mechanics
Colour / style switching (the core mechanic). Vasilias changes its combat style throughout the fight by changing its carapace, and the colour is your instruction: blue means attack with Magic, green means attack with Ranged, and white means attack with Melee. Attacking it with the wrong style causes it to reflect the hit back at you and heal from the hit, so a mis-match costs you twice. In normal and hard mode it changes every 10 ticks (6 seconds), and it always switches to one of the other two styles — it will never stay on the same colour twice in a row.
Matching prayer. Because Vasilias itself attacks with Stab (melee), Magic and Ranged at attack speed 4, pair your offensive prayer to the style you are using. For protection, always keep Protect from Melee on: it fully negates the boss's melee hit, and a protection prayer reduces incoming damage to 17 versus up to 70 off-prayer. The 6-second rhythm means you should pre-position your next weapon swap before the colour actually changes.
Hard Mode — ranged spread. In hard mode, Vasilias's ranged attack hits everyone standing within 2 squares of its target. The wiki advises spreading out with a 3-tile gap from the rest of your party whenever it turns green.
Hard Mode — magic bounce. Its magic attack bounces off the player it hits and spreads to every other player, dealing the same damage to each one regardless of whether Protect from Magic is up. That damage is reduced by 50% for players standing within two tiles of the target, and if the whole team stacks on the same tile the attack only damages the target.
Entry Mode pacing. In Entry Mode the boss takes longer to switch colours than in regular and hard mode, giving you more time to switch prayer and gear — which makes it the right place to learn the rhythm.
Strategy & kill rotation
Treat Vasilias as a reaction drill. Watch the carapace, swap to the matching weapon and offensive prayer, get your hits in, and be ready to swap again on the 6-second beat. Never attack into the wrong colour — a single wrong-style hit both reflects damage onto you and heals the boss, so a careless swap can undo several seconds of damage. Lean on the boss's 15% fire-spell weakness during its blue (magic) phase to squeeze extra damage out of those windows.
In hard mode, layer the positioning rules on top: spread to a 3-tile gap from teammates when it turns green to dodge the ranged spread, and coordinate stacking on the magic bounce so the team takes minimal total damage. If you are learning, do your reps in Entry Mode first, where the slower colour cadence forgives slower swaps and a wipe simply sends you back outside with unlimited attempts (though Hardcore ironmen still lose their status on death).
Notable drops
Nylocas Vasilias itself is a raid encounter rather than a standalone loot pinata — the Theatre of Blood reward chest handles the valuable uniques at the end of the raid. The one item directly tied to Vasilias is the Arachnids of vampyrium, a lore book always dropped here, which is no longer dropped once you have read the book. Check the live drop table above for current details.
Common mistakes
Attacking the wrong colour. The single biggest mistake — hitting blue with melee, green with magic, and so on — reflects the hit back at you and heals the boss. Always confirm the colour before you click.
- Slow swaps. With a 6-second switch in normal and hard mode, hesitating on the weapon swap means lost damage every cycle. Pre-arrange your inventory so each style's weapon is in a fixed, muscle-memory slot.
- Forgetting fire's bonus. Skipping fire spells on the magic phase leaves the 15% elemental weakness on the table.
- Bringing poison/venom weapons. Vasilias is 100% resistant to both, so they are wasted slots.
- Ignoring hard-mode positioning. Not spreading on green (ranged) or mismanaging the magic bounce stack can chunk the whole team.
Nylocas Vasilias Guide — FAQ
How do I beat Nylocas Vasilias?
Match your combat style to its carapace colour: blue = Magic, green = Ranged, white = Melee. It changes every 10 ticks (6 seconds) in normal and hard mode and never repeats the same colour twice in a row, so you must swap weapon and prayer on that rhythm. Attacking the wrong style reflects the hit back at you and heals the boss.
What is Nylocas Vasilias weak to?
Each form must be attacked with the matching style (Magic on blue, Ranged on green, Melee on white). On top of that, since the 25 June 2025 update Vasilias has a 15% elemental weakness to fire spells, so fire magic is the strongest choice during its magic phase. It is also fully resistant to poison and venom (100% each).
Where do I fight Nylocas Vasilias?
It is the third encounter in the Theatre of Blood (members-only). You don't seek it out — it spawns once your team has killed off the preceding hordes of Nylocas Hagios, Ischyros and Toxobolos in the same room.
What's different in Hard Mode?
Hard Mode raises the boss's maximum hit and adds two spread mechanics: its ranged attack hits everyone within 2 squares of its target (spread to a 3-tile gap on green), and its magic attack bounces and spreads to every player for the same damage regardless of Protect from Magic — reduced 50% within two tiles of the target, or limited to only the target if everyone stacks on one tile.
