Best in slot gear for Rune Dragon (current meta)
This setup is computed live from the same wiki-sourced combat stats and monster data that power our OSRS DPS calculator — so it tracks the current meta instead of going stale. Pick your combat style above and it ranks every viable weapon and armour piece by damage per second against Rune Dragon, factoring in the boss's defences, size and any elemental weakness.
Not at maxed stats? Lower any level on the left and the recommendation re-ranks instantly — requirement-gated gear drops out automatically. For the full ranked list per slot, open the BiS calculator; to pit two specific items against each other, use Gear Compare.
Rune Dragon Strategy Guide
Rune dragon Guide
Rune dragons are combat level 380 metal dragons and the strongest of all metal dragons. They are first encountered during Dragon Slayer II, where you must fight one during Zorgoth's assault, and after the quest they can be found in the eastern chamber of the Lithkren Vault. With 330 Hitpoints, accurate attacks from every corner of the combat triangle, and two dangerous special attacks, they demand respect, but they reward you with a steady stream of runes, alchables and the chance at three rare dragon uniques.
This guide covers the requirement to fight them, the recommended setup, every attack you need to handle, and how to chain efficient kills. For your exact best-in-slot loadout, use our Boss Gear Finder above.
Requirements & where to fight
Rune dragons live in the eastern chamber of the Lithkren Vault, and you must have completed Dragon Slayer II to reach and fight them there. They can also be assigned as a Slayer task by Konar, Nieve and Duradel, falling under the Metal Dragons category.
The fastest way to reach them is to use a digsite pendant to teleport directly to the Lithkren Vault. Alternatively, take the boat by Jardric to the north-west of Fossil Island to Lithkren and navigate the ruins to reach the vault. After the quest you can also add a teleport straight to Lithkren onto a digsite pendant by using it on the strange machine north of the rune dragon room.
Because their attacks are accurate and they hit hard, this is endgame-level content. The Strategies page suggests roughly 90+ melee stats before taking them on.
Recommended stats & gear
The Strategies page suggests roughly 90+ Attack, Strength and Defence, 90+ Ranged, and 70+ Prayer. You can fight rune dragons with any of the three combat styles, each with a clear meta direction:
- Melee is a reliable option with base 90 melee stats and an Osmumten's fang or dragon hunter lance. Pair it with high-defence armour families (Bandos, Justiciar or Barrows) because the dragons' attacks are accurate and strong.
- Ranged works well with level 90 Ranged and a Dragon hunter crossbow, whose passive effect makes kills easy while letting you stand back from the melee attack entirely.
- Magic is strong because rune dragons have relatively low Magic defence. The Tumeken's shadow is described as the most effective weapon across all styles, even over dragonbane weaponry; without one, Earth spells are a viable alternative since the dragons have a 50% elemental weakness to Earth spells.
Whatever style you bring, wear insulated boots to cut the electric special's damage, and carry dragonfire protection. For the wider item families behind each style, read our melee gear, ranged gear and magic gear guides, then build your exact loadout in the Boss Gear Finder above.
Inventory & supplies
Whichever style you run, the Strategies page recommends a similar kit:
- A digsite pendant (or a mounted one in your POH with house tabs) for travel.
- A stat-boosting potion for your style: a divine super combat, super combat or super set for melee, a divine ranging or ranging potion for ranged, or a saturated heart for magic.
- One extended antifire, or an extended super antifire if you use a shield without dragonfire protection.
- 3-4 prayer potions.
- Food such as sharks, manta rays, anglerfish or karambwan.
The example inventories fill the remaining slots with cheap food, so you can stay for a long trip and alch your rune drops between kills.
Fight mechanics
Rune dragons have multiple attack styles plus two unique special attacks on top of their dragonfire.
Standard attacks. They have standard melee, ranged and magic attacks, with max hits of 29 with melee, 31 with ranged and 26 with magic.
Dragonfire. Their dragonfire can hit up to 50 when unprotected, so bring antifire protection. The Strategies page recommends an extended antifire, or an extended super antifire if your shield does not provide dragonfire protection. Keep your antifire topped up at all times.
Electricity special. The dragon throws two small balls of electricity onto the floor that then arc to nearby tiles, dealing rapid hits if you don't move. The main page states this deals 4-7 damage per tick for a few seconds, reduced to 1-2 per tick with insulated boots; you can avoid it entirely by running four to five squares away from your position when the attack launches.
Life Leech special. An augmented ranged attack that hits up to 40 through Protect from Missiles and heals the dragon for the damage it deals to you. To counter the healing, use Vengeance: as soon as a number appears in a purple hitsplat on the dragon, prepare or cast Vengeance so the dragon takes recoil damage instead of getting a free heal.
Strategy & kill rotation
The core rotation is simple once your supplies are set. Pre-pot your antifire so dragonfire can't touch you, drink your combat or ranging potion, and turn on your offensive prayer (Piety for melee, Rigour or Eagle Eye for ranged).
For protection prayer, melee setups use Protect from Magic alongside their offensive prayer, while ranged and magic setups use Protect from Missiles due to the dragons' accurate ranged attacks. Keep insulated boots on and run a few tiles whenever the electricity special appears on the floor. When the Life Leech ranged attack lands a purple hitsplat, fire off Vengeance to deny the heal. Eat when needed and keep topping up antifire and prayer so a single special never spirals.
If you want to refine your protection prayers and learn when to switch, our Prayer guide covers the supporting prayers in detail.
Notable drops
Every rune dragon drops dragon bones and a runite bar on every kill, plus rune armour, runes (including wrath, death and chaos runes) and other alchables that make trips profitable.
The marquee uniques all sit on the tertiary drop table: the Draconic visage at 1/8000, Dragon limbs at 1/800, and the Dragon metal lump at 1/5000. On a Slayer task given by Konar quo Maten, they also drop a Brimstone key.
Common mistakes
- Letting the antifire run out. Unprotected dragonfire can hit 50. Bring an extended antifire (or extended super antifire without a dragonfire-protecting shield) and re-pot before the timer expires.
- Standing in the electricity. Run four to five squares away when the balls drop, and wear insulated boots to cut the per-tick damage.
- Ignoring the Life Leech heal. It hits through Protect from Missiles and heals the dragon; prepare Vengeance and fire it on the purple hitsplat.
- Bringing weak gear. Their attacks are accurate and strong, so skimping on defensive armour or a dragonbane weapon makes kills slow and dangerous.
Rune dragon Guide — FAQ
What do I need to fight rune dragons?
You must have completed Dragon Slayer II to reach and fight them in the Lithkren Vault. The Strategies page suggests around 90+ melee stats, 90+ Ranged and 70+ Prayer.
How do I deal with rune dragon dragonfire?
Bring antifire protection. Unprotected dragonfire can hit up to 50. The Strategies page recommends an extended antifire, or an extended super antifire if your shield does not provide dragonfire protection.
Why does the dragon heal itself?
That is the Life Leech special, an augmented ranged attack that hits up to 40 through Protect from Missiles and heals the dragon for the damage it deals to you. Use Vengeance as soon as you see the purple hitsplat to deny the heal.
What is the best style and weapon for rune dragons?
All three styles work. Melee is reliable with a Dragon hunter lance or Osmumten's fang; Ranged is easy with a Dragon hunter crossbow; and Magic is strong because their Magic defence is low, with the Tumeken's shadow listed as the most effective weapon across all styles. For your exact loadout, use the Boss Gear Finder above.
What are the best drops?
The marquee uniques are the Draconic visage (1/8000), Dragon limbs (1/800) and the Dragon metal lump (1/5000). Every kill also gives dragon bones and a runite bar.
