Best in slot gear for Smoke Devil (current meta)
This setup is computed live from the same wiki-sourced combat stats and monster data that power our OSRS DPS calculator — so it tracks the current meta instead of going stale. Pick your combat style above and it ranks every viable weapon and armour piece by damage per second against Smoke Devil, factoring in the boss's defences, size and any elemental weakness.
Not at maxed stats? Lower any level on the left and the recommendation re-ranks instantly — requirement-gated gear drops out automatically. For the full ranked list per slot, open the BiS calculator; to pit two specific items against each other, use Gear Compare.
Smoke Devil Strategy Guide
Smoke devil Guide
The smoke devil is a Slayer monster and a stronger variant of the dust devil, found exclusively in the Smoke Devil Dungeon. It is the regular precursor to the Thermonuclear smoke devil boss and the Nuclear smoke devil superior variant. Smoke devils have combat level 160, 185 Hitpoints, and attack with a magical ranged style at attack speed 4 for a max hit of 20.
You cannot harm a smoke devil without a minimum of 93 Slayer and an active Slayer task, plus a slayer helmet, slayer helmet (i), or facemask to protect against the smoke. Because the chamber is a multi-combat area, the meta is mass Magic training: bursting or barraging stacked devils alongside a Dwarf multicannon. They are one of only three monsters (with the boss and superior variants) that drop the occult necklace.
Requirements & where to fight
Smoke devils live in the Smoke Devil Dungeon and reside in a multi-combat area, so they can be burst, barraged, or hit with chinchompas. To fight them you need:
- 93 Slayer and an active Slayer task — they can only be fought on task, and are assigned by Konar, Nieve, or Duradel.
- A slayer helmet, slayer helmet (i), or facemask to survive the smoke (see Fight mechanics below).
- 40 Prayer for Protect from Missiles, which negates their attacks entirely.
The recommended way in is to bank at Castle Wars and run south-west of the building to the dungeon entrance. Alternatively, use the fairy ring with code bkp to teleport south-west of the dungeon, then run to the centre of the room. Note that smoke devils do not count toward dust devil tasks, even though the two are similar.
Recommended stats & gear
Smoke devils are a Magic-focused kill. Unlike dust devils, smoke devils have some Magic defence, so gear that provides Magic accuracy is beneficial, not just damage. The recommended setup centres on:
- 94 Magic to cast Ice Barrage (Ice Burst can be used at lower levels), which freezes and groups devils for fast multi-target hits.
- High Defence to equip Magic-damage robes such as Virtus or ancestral.
- A staff or wand that can autocast Ancient Magicks — the Kodai wand is noted as most effective, giving +15% Magic damage plus infinite water runes and a rune-saving chance.
Note that smoke devils have a 30% elemental weakness to air spells, so an air spell such as Wind Wave or Wind Surge lands harder against them; however, the multi-combat meta is still mass Ice Barrage/Burst for grouping and multi-target hits, so air spells are mainly relevant for single-target or Ironman luring rather than the standard barrage rotation.
The wiki also flags the bracelet of slaughter over the tormented bracelet: although the tormented bracelet raises max hit, the bracelet of slaughter extends the task and maximises overall Slayer experience. For a full loadout tuned to your bank and stats, use our Boss Gear Finder above rather than copying a fixed list. You can also browse the magic gear options to see where your setup sits.
Inventory & supplies
Because the chamber is very large, bringing a Dwarf multicannon is recommended to get the devils' attention — smoke devils are not immune to cannon damage. Pack the cannon parts and steel cannonballs alongside your runes for Barrage. For Ancient Magicks you want a rune pouch carrying water, blood, and death runes (a Kodai wand supplies water runes itself).
For sustained trips, players commonly bring a method to restore stats and prayer — the wiki suggests an ornate pool and jewellery box via Construction, or a ring of dueling for Ferox Enclave and Castle Wars teleports. Valuable common drops like the rune chainbody, plus fire and air battlestaves, generally offset the rune and cannonball costs over a trip.
Fight mechanics
Ranged (magical ranged) attack. Smoke devils attack only with a ranged-style attack for a max hit of 20 at attack speed 4. Protect from Missiles prevents all damage from them, so keep it on for the whole task.
The smoke. The devils sit in a smoky environment. Players not wearing a facemask or slayer helmet take 10 damage occasionally just from being in the dungeon, and the devils' own attacks then deal very rapid damage that also drains stats. This is why the facemask/slayer helmet is mandatory, not optional. A common death is misclicking off the slayer helmet (for example when checking remaining kills) or accidentally equipping a rune full helm that dropped as loot — either swap leaves you exposed to the smoke and the devils at once.
Strategy / kill rotation
The core loop is mass Barrage with a cannon for grouping:
- Run to the centre of the room and place the cannon there to start the devils attacking.
- Run around each side of the skeleton pile to the west to stack the devils together — the remains in the chamber act as walls, letting you pile devils on top of one another for fast Barrage hits.
- Keep Protect from Missiles active and Barrage (or Burst) the grouped stack while the cannon adds extra damage.
With Ice Barrage and a cannon, smoke devils can give Slayer experience rates of up to 180,000 per hour at peak efficiency, though around 120,000 per hour is more realistic. Ironmen who cannot afford heavy Barrage costs can instead lure devils with a ranged weapon such as a magic shortbow, but this gives lower experience rates.
Notable drops
SSOT note: the drops below are named from the fetched wiki drop table only. The occult necklace (1/512) is the headline unique — smoke devils, their boss variant, and their superior variant are the only monsters that drop it, and it can turn a task into a net profit. The rarest drop is the dragon chainbody (1/32768).
Reliable mid-value drops include the rune chainbody (2/128) and the fire and air battlestaves (3/128 each), which help cover supply costs. On a Konar task they also roll the brimstone key. Note the Smoke battlestaff is dropped only by the Thermonuclear smoke devil boss, not the regular smoke devil, so do not expect it here.
Common mistakes
- Going in without a facemask or slayer helmet. The smoke alone deals 10 damage occasionally and the devils' attacks drain stats — this is the fastest way to die here.
- Misclicking off your slayer helmet. Checking kills-remaining or equipping a dropped rune full helm can strip your smoke protection mid-fight; be deliberate with inventory clicks.
- Forgetting Protect from Missiles. It negates 100% of their damage, so leaving it off wastes food and risks a death.
- Skipping the cannon. The chamber is large; without a cannon to pull aggression, grouping devils for efficient Barrage is far slower.
- Trying to count them as dust devils. Smoke devils do not count for dust devil tasks.
Smoke devil Guide — FAQ
What level Slayer do I need for smoke devils?
You need level 93 Slayer and an active Slayer task. Smoke devils can only be fought while on a smoke devil task, assigned by Konar, Nieve, or Duradel.
Do I really need a facemask or slayer helmet?
Yes. Without a facemask, slayer helmet, or slayer helmet (i), the smoky dungeon deals 10 damage to you occasionally, and the devils' attacks deal very rapid damage that also drains your stats. The headgear is required to kill them safely.
What's the best way to train here?
Mass Magic with a cannon. Place a Dwarf multicannon in the centre of the room to draw aggression, group the devils behind the western skeleton pile, and Ice Barrage the stack with Protect from Missiles on. This reaches up to about 180,000 Slayer XP per hour, with ~120,000 being more realistic.
Can smoke devils drop the Smoke battlestaff?
No. Only the Thermonuclear smoke devil boss variant drops the Smoke battlestaff. The regular smoke devil's headline unique is the occult necklace (1/512), which it shares only with its boss and superior variants.
