Tormented Demon Guide

Tormented Demons are extremely powerful demons released on 10 July 2024 with the While Guthix Sleeps quest. The Wiki describes them as demons "bound into a state of perpetual agony, healing their bodies as they burn," summoned by the Mahjarrat Lucien after he teleports away the Stone of Jas during the quest. They can be found throughout the Ancient Guthixian Temple once While Guthix Sleeps is complete.

They are combat level 450 with 600 hitpoints and attack with every combat style, so beating them is a test of prayer-switching and timing rather than raw gear. They count as greater demons for Slayer tasks (assigned by Chaeldar, Nieve, and Kuradal) and, as demons, are vulnerable to demonbane weapons. Players farm them mainly for the tormented synapse and burning claw drops, which fuel high-tier demonbane gear.

Requirements and where to fight

The only hard requirement is completion of the While Guthix Sleeps quest, which unlocks access to the Ancient Guthixian Temple where the demons live. The Wiki recommends high combat stats in at least two styles — broadly Attack 75+, Strength 75+, Defence 70+, Ranged 70+, Hitpoints 75+ and Prayer 70+ (74 for Rigour, 77 for Augury) — plus Magic 82+ if you want to use Dark Demonbane and good magic defence.

Two optional quests sharply improve your kills: Shadow of the Storm gives access to Arclight, and A Kingdom Divided unlocks Dark Demonbane. Both are demonbane options, and demonbane gear is the single biggest power lever at this boss. The quickest way into the temple is a Guthixian temple teleport scroll, which the demons themselves drop at a rate of 1/12; alternatively you can reach it via a games necklace to Tears of Guthix and a lit sapphire lantern.

Recommended stats and gear

The defining rule here is simple: every weapon that is not classed as abyssal or demonbane deals 20% reduced damage against tormented demons. That makes demonbane melee — Arclight, Emberlight, and the demonbane spells — the meta core of almost every setup, with melee being the strongest style overall thanks to Arclight's accessibility. The Wiki also gives them a 30% elemental weakness to water spells (added 25 June 2025), so water-based Magic is a genuine option, and ranged works with less switching but lower damage.

Because the demon switches protection prayer roughly every quarter of its health, you need at least two combat styles ready so you can keep attacking off-prayer. The Wiki's loadouts pair a demonbane main weapon with a strong, slow Crush melee or Heavy ranged "punish" weapon for the moments its fire shield is down (more on that below). Rather than memorising an exact item list, plug your levels and budget into our Boss Gear Finder above — it will build the right demonbane-led switches for your account.

Inventory and supplies

This is a long, attrition-style fight, so bring sustain. The Wiki's max setups carry 1-2 Divine super combat potions, 6-8 Super restores, and 4-6 high-healing food such as manta rays; budget setups swap in Super combat potions, Prayer potions or Super restores, and 10-12 sharks.

You also want a special-attack weapon (the Wiki suggests burning claws, dragon claws, or a dragon dagger on budget), Guthixian temple teleports plus a banking teleport such as a house tablet, and a rune pouch / Book of the dead stocked for the spells you intend to use — Mark of Darkness, Dark Demonbane, Demonic Offering, Death Charge, and Thralls all see play here.

Fight mechanics

Rotating protection prayers. Tormented demons can pray against and attack with every combat style, hitting a max of 31 with their standard attacks and up to 45 with their special attack. Every 150 health lost since their last swap (about 25% of their max HP) they change their overhead prayer to the last style you damaged them with, and stop attacking for 6 ticks (3.6s). This is why you bring two styles — when they pray against your current weapon, switch to the other to keep dealing damage.

Fire bomb bind. Roughly every 60 ticks (36s; 10 attacks) the demon briefly binds you in place and disables run, then drops two fire bombs — one on your tile and one on a random adjacent tile. You have 2 ticks (1.2s) to move clear before they explode for 40+ damage. Ctrl-click still lets you run while bound, and standing in the open (not against a wall) guarantees there are safe tiles to step to. The demon always changes combat style right after this attack.

Fire shield. The demon usually carries a fire shield that reduces non-demonbane / non-abyssal damage by 20%. It drops the shield after your first attack and after every fire bomb, and it stays down until you hit it once. That brief unshielded window is where slow Crush melee or Heavy ranged "punish" weapons land huge bonus hits, so timing your slow weapon into it is the core DPS trick.

Defencelessness. About 30 ticks (18s) into the fight the demon becomes defenceless — its back flames go out and your attacks have 100% accuracy until your first hit after the next fire bomb. This is the ideal moment to fire a special attack or your most accurate weapon.

Strategy and kill rotation

Open by attacking with your demonbane weapon to immediately knock the shield down, then exploit the early unshielded hit with a slow Crush or Heavy ranged punish weapon for big damage. Keep your overhead protection prayer matched to the demon's current attack style, and watch which way it moves after each fire bomb to read the next style: if it walks toward you it will melee; if it stays back it uses magic or ranged.

Throughout the fight, alternate your two weapon styles so that whenever the demon prays against one, you swap to the other and never waste damage. Save your special attack and most accurate weapon for the defenceless windows (100% accuracy). React to each fire bomb by stepping off the target tiles within the 2-tick window, and re-drop the shield with your next hit. The Wiki notes you can fight up to three demons at once for faster kills, but this is much harder — a third demon adds extra fire bombs that force constant movement, so solo-target kills are the safer default while learning.

Notable drops

The reason to grind tormented demons is the two uniques. The tormented synapse (rate 1/500) is used to create high-tier demonbane weaponry, and the burning claw is collected in pairs to build the burning claws — a special-attack weapon the Wiki places between the dragon dagger and dragon claws in power, but more effective against demons.

Beyond the uniques, every kill always drops infernal ashes, and the table also includes the handy Guthixian temple teleport (1/12) for fast return trips, plus rune gear, runes, herbs, and high-healing supplies. The full drop table with exact rates is shown above.

Common mistakes

  • Using non-demonbane weapons as your main. Anything that is not abyssal or demonbane takes a flat 20% damage penalty here — Arclight, Emberlight, or demonbane spells should anchor your setup.
  • Bringing only one combat style. The demon swaps protection prayer every ~150 damage; without a second style you stop dealing damage every time it prays against you.
  • Standing against a wall during fire bombs. Bombs only land on valid tiles, so tight corners can leave you no safe square to step to. Fight in the open and Ctrl-click to move while bound.
  • Wasting the shield-down window. The unshielded hit gives slow Crush or Heavy ranged weapons a large bonus — missing that timing throws away your best damage.
  • Ignoring the defenceless phase. When the flames go out you have 100% accuracy — that is the time to spec, not when the shield is up.

Tormented Demon Guide — FAQ

What do I need to fight Tormented Demons?

You must have completed the While Guthix Sleeps quest for access to the Ancient Guthixian Temple. The Wiki recommends roughly Attack/Strength/Hitpoints 75+, Defence/Ranged 70+, and Prayer 70+. Completing Shadow of the Storm (for Arclight) and A Kingdom Divided (for Dark Demonbane) is strongly recommended for demonbane gear.

What are Tormented Demons weak to?

As demons they take full damage from demonbane weapons, while every non-abyssal, non-demonbane weapon deals 20% reduced damage. They also have a 30% elemental weakness to water spells (added 25 June 2025), making water Magic a viable option.

How do the protection prayers and fire shield work?

The demon swaps its overhead prayer to your last damage style every 150 health lost (~25% of its HP), so bring two combat styles. Its fire shield cuts non-demonbane damage by 20% but drops after your first hit and after each fire bomb — that brief unshielded window is when slow Crush or Heavy ranged weapons land big bonus damage.

Why kill Tormented Demons?

For the two unique drops: the tormented synapse (1/500), used to make high-tier demonbane weapons, and the burning claw, two of which combine into the burning claws special-attack weapon. They also drop the Guthixian temple teleport at 1/12 for quick return trips.
