Best in slot gear for Wyrm (current meta)
This setup is computed live from the same wiki-sourced combat stats and monster data that power our OSRS DPS calculator — so it tracks the current meta instead of going stale. Pick your combat style above and it ranks every viable weapon and armour piece by damage per second against Wyrm, factoring in the boss's defences, size and any elemental weakness.
Not at maxed stats? Lower any level on the left and the recommendation re-ranks instantly — requirement-gated gear drops out automatically. For the full ranked list per slot, open the BiS calculator; to pit two specific items against each other, use Gear Compare.
Wyrm Strategy Guide
Wyrm Guide
Wyrms are draconic creatures found on the lower level of the Karuulm Slayer Dungeon in Mount Karuulm, requiring level 62 Slayer to kill. They are combat level 97 with 120 Hitpoints, and an attempted recreation of the ancient war-wyrms by the Dragonkin Karuulm. Although they carry the dragon attribute, they do not require any form of dragonfire protection, which makes them far more forgiving than true dragons. They attack with both Melee and Magic but never breathe fire, so the main thing to plan around is the dungeon's burning floor and their magic attack. Killing one is required for the Hard Kourend & Kebos Diary and counts as an Easy Combat Achievement.
Requirements & where to fight
You need level 62 Slayer to harm a wyrm, and a wyrm task can be assigned by Chaeldar, Konar, Nieve, or Duradel. They live only on the lower level of the Karuulm Slayer Dungeon beneath Mount Karuulm.
The fastest way down is the fairy ring code C-I-R south of the mountain, or a direct teleport to Mount Karuulm using Rada's blessing 3 or 4. The dungeon floor is searing hot, so unless you have finished the Elite Kourend & Kebos Diary, you must wear boots of stone, boots of brimstone, or granite boots to stop the extreme heat rapidly burning you. With the Elite diary done you can skip the special footwear entirely. If you are still levelling the prerequisite, our Slayer guide walks through unlocking higher-level tasks like this.
Recommended stats & gear
Wyrms are weak to earth magic (a 50% weakness) and also have notably low stab defence and low heavy-Ranged defence, so the meta leans on those soft spots. The Wiki documents two clean approaches.
- Ranged from range. If you attack a wyrm from a distance it will only use its magic attack, turning the fight into a pure-magic encounter you can pray against. Pair a Ranged weapon with magic protection — either Protect from Magic or armour with high magic defence such as dragonhide — and you have a low-risk method. See our Ranged guide and Ranged gear picks.
- Magic, exploiting the earth weakness. Their 50% weakness to earth spells rewards a magic loadout; our Magic guide covers the spellbook side.
Wyrms are also vulnerable to dragonbane weapons — the dragon hunter lance, dragon hunter crossbow, and dragon hunter wand all get a bonus against them. For exact best-in-slot picks for your account, use the Boss Gear Finder above rather than guessing.
Inventory & supplies
This is a light task, so the inventory is simple. Bring your boots of stone / brimstone / granite boots if you have not finished the Elite diary (the single most important item here). Pack food and prayer potions sized to your defence and method, and if you go Ranged bring magic-defence-leaning armour or the runes for Protect from Magic. Keeping your prayer topped up matters more than raw food because, ranged correctly, the only damage you take is the magic attack. Manage your prayer points with help from our Prayer guide.
Fight mechanics
When you find a wyrm it will be slithering idle on the ground. Once attacked it levitates and begins fighting back — but it can still be hit with melee in either state. It has two attacks:
- Magic attack (max 13). Its ranged threat and the only attack it uses if you stay out of melee distance. Pray Protect from Magic, or stack high magic defence, to neutralise it.
- Melee attack (max 10, Slash). Only used when you stand next to the wyrm. The clean way to avoid it is simply to attack from a distance — at range the wyrm drops the melee option and uses magic only.
Two quirks to know: wyrms do not require any dragonfire protection (they never breathe fire), and a dwarf multicannon cannot be set up in the area — you get the message that the electricity is too powerful. They are also fully immune to poison and venom. When a wyrm drops back to its idle stance it clears any burn effect on itself.
Strategy & kill rotation
The lowest-effort routine is to attack from range with magic protection up, let the wyrm fight back with magic only, and pray it down. If you are on a Slayer task you can lean into the dungeon's safespot: lure an idle wyrm from the eastern alcove of the second island into a corner and range it from outside its 6-square magic range. Note that idle wyrms re-idle after several hits without retaliation and may wander out of the safespot, so a weapon with a 5-tick attack speed (such as a magic longbow or rune crossbow on rapid) helps re-aggro it the instant its re-idle animation ends. If a wyrm slips into the northern corridor you can set up a second safespot along the second island's north-western edge, six squares from the corner. Pay some attention either way so you do not chase a wandering wyrm into its attack range.
Notable drops
Every wyrm always drops wyrm bones, so a wyrm task doubles as steady Prayer training fuel — bank them or bury them. Note that a wyrm killed in its idle form will not drop regular bones.
The headline uniques are the dragon sword and dragon harpoon — wyrms are the only monsters in the game to drop either. They also drop the dragon knife and dragon thrownaxe. All four uniques share the same rarity: 1/10000 off-task, improving to 1/2000 while on a wyrm Slayer task, so taking the task is well worth it. Konar tasks add a chance at a Brimstone key. The render engine's drop table above lists the full loot and rates; check the live GE price tracker for current unique values.
Common mistakes
- Forgetting the boots. Without the Elite Kourend & Kebos Diary, going down without boots of stone, brimstone, or granite boots means the floor burns you rapidly. This is the number-one wyrm mistake.
- Bringing dragonfire gear. Wyrms never breathe fire and need no dragonfire protection — an anti-dragon shield or dragonfire shield wastes a gear slot here.
- Trying to cannon them. A dwarf multicannon simply cannot be placed in the area, so do not waste the trip carrying one.
- Standing in melee on a magic-protect setup. If you want the pure-magic fight that Protect from Magic covers, you must attack from a distance — stepping adjacent re-enables the melee attack the prayer does not block.
Wyrm Guide — FAQ
What Slayer level do I need to kill Wyrms?
Level 62 Slayer. Wyrm tasks are assigned by Chaeldar, Konar, Nieve, and Duradel.
Do I need dragonfire protection for Wyrms?
No. Despite the dragon attribute, wyrms do not require any form of dragonfire protection — they never use a fire-breath attack. You do, however, need boots of stone, boots of brimstone, or granite boots for the hot floor unless you have completed the Elite Kourend & Kebos Diary.
What are the best drops from a Wyrm?
The standout uniques are the dragon sword and dragon harpoon — wyrms are the only monsters that drop them — along with the dragon knife and dragon thrownaxe. Each is 1/10000 normally and 1/2000 while on a wyrm Slayer task. Every kill also gives wyrm bones for Prayer XP.
Can I safespot Wyrms?
Yes, while on a Slayer task. Lure an idle wyrm into a corner of the second island's eastern alcove and range it from outside its 6-square magic range. Re-aggro it with a 5-tick weapon (magic longbow or rune crossbow on rapid) so it does not re-idle and wander off.
