The Kodai wand is the strongest wand in Old School RuneScape, a one-handed staff requiring 80 Magic to wield. It attacks at 4 ticks (2.4s) and gives +28 Magic attack with +15% Magic damage. Equipped it grants unlimited water runes and a 15% chance to negate rune costs on offensive spells, and can autocast Ancient, standard and Arceuus spells. It is created by combining a Kodai insignia (a Chambers of Xeric reward) with a master wand, and trades around 76M.
Equipment bonuses
The Kodai wand offers +28 Magic attack and a +15% Magic damage boost, the best of any wand in the game, alongside small +20 Magic defence and +3 slash/crush defence. It attacks at 4 ticks (2.4 seconds) per cast and needs 80 Magic to equip.

Other bonuses
Those bonuses, plus unlimited water runes and the 15% rune-saving passive, make it the premier off-hand-free spellcasting wand for both standard and Ancient Magicks.

How to get the Kodai wand
The Kodai wand is not a direct drop. It is created by using a Kodai insignia on a master wand. The chatbox confirms the wand is empowered "with the darkness of Xeric's Kodai wizards," and the process cannot be reversed.
- The Kodai insignia is a reward from completing the Chambers of Xeric raid.
- A master wand is bought from Mage Training Arena reward shops or off other players.
- Both the finished wand and the insignia are tradeable, so you can simply buy a Kodai wand on the Grand Exchange for around 76M instead of raiding.
Originally the completed wand dropped from the raid; since 12 January 2017 the insignia is awarded instead, letting players sell the component separately.
Passive effects & mechanics
The Kodai wand's value comes from three passives stacked on top of its +15% Magic damage:
- Unlimited water runes — while equipped, the wand supplies the water-rune component of any spell for free, so water-based spells (and combo spells) never consume water runes.
- 15% rune-cost negation — every offensive spell cast has a 15% chance of using no runes at all, cutting long-term supply costs.
- +15% Magic damage — increases the maximum hit of every spell, the highest flat damage boost of any wand.
It can autocast Ancient Magicks, standard spells and Arceuus combat spells. When paired with the tome of water, water spells use the tome's accuracy and damage bonuses while also drawing on the tome's soaked page charges.
Is the Kodai wand worth it?
For dedicated mages the Kodai wand is the best-in-slot wand, beating the master wand and Nightmare staff line on damage thanks to its +15% Magic damage and free water runes. As a one-handed weapon it leaves the shield slot open for a tome of fire, arcane spirit shield or elidinis' ward, which is why it remains a staple for the Boss Gear Finder magic setups.
Its main rival is the two-handed Tumeken's shadow, which triples magic bonuses but costs far more and blocks the shield slot. For most content where you cast Ice Barrage, Fire Surge or Ancient spells with a shield equipped, the Kodai wand offers the strongest, most rune-efficient option for its price.
Kodai wand FAQ
What level do you need to wield the Kodai wand?
You need 80 Magic to equip the Kodai wand. This was raised from level 75 in the 11 May 2022 Equipment Rebalance.
How do you get the Kodai wand?
You combine a Kodai insignia with a master wand. The insignia is a reward from the Chambers of Xeric raid; the master wand comes from the Mage Training Arena. Both pieces and the finished wand are tradeable, so you can also just buy it on the Grand Exchange.
What does the Kodai wand's passive do?
While equipped it provides unlimited water runes and gives a 15% chance of negating rune costs when casting an offensive spell, on top of its +15% Magic damage boost.
Does the Kodai wand have a special attack?
No. The Kodai wand has no special attack. Its strength is its passive effects and +15% Magic damage rather than a spec bar move.
Is the Kodai wand better than Tumeken's shadow?
It depends on the content. Tumeken's shadow triples magic bonuses and hits harder, but it is two-handed and far more expensive. The Kodai wand is one-handed, so it keeps your shield slot free and is far cheaper, making it the better value pick when you want a shield equipped.
How much is the Kodai wand worth?
The Kodai wand trades for roughly 76M on the Grand Exchange. Check the live price tracker above for the current value, as raid-reward items fluctuate.
What is the Kodai wand's attack speed?
The Kodai wand attacks at 4 ticks, which is 2.4 seconds per cast — the standard speed for staves and autocast magic.
Can you reverse a Kodai wand back into a master wand?
No. Combining a Kodai insignia with a master wand is permanent and cannot be undone, so the master wand is consumed in the process.
Update history
The Kodai wand now requires level 80 Magic to wield instead of level 75 Magic.
The wand received a 15% chance of negating rune costs when casting offensive spells, as it was originally intended.
Kodai insignia is now received as a reward instead of the completed wand. All wands obtained prior were unaffected.
