Eclipse atlatl

“A powerful thrown weapon forged from an eclipse.”

The Eclipse atlatl is a two-handed ranged weapon from Varlamore: Part One that requires 75 Ranged, 50 Attack and 50 Strength to wield. Its standout quirk: max hit scales off your melee Strength bonus, not ranged strength, while accuracy still uses your ranged bonus. It throws atlatl darts at a fast 4-tick (2.4s) rapid cycle, and is obtained from the Lunar Chest in Neypotzli at roughly 1/224. It trades around 1.5M on the Grand Exchange.

Equipment bonuses

The Eclipse atlatl gives +87 ranged attack and an unusual +40 melee strength bonus, the stat that actually drives its damage. It attacks every 4 ticks (2.4 seconds) and needs 75 Ranged, 50 Attack and 50 Strength to equip.

That +40 melee strength is the whole point: unlike normal ranged weapons, this atlatl rolls its max hit from melee strength gear, so a high-strength setup can out-damage classic ranged kit against low-defence targets.

How the Eclipse atlatl works

The Eclipse atlatl is the most unusual ranged weapon in the game. Despite the throwing animation, the wiki notes it is technically a bow, not a thrown weapon. It fires atlatl darts as ammunition, which can be retrieved with an Ava's device just like arrows.

Its defining trait: max hit is determined by your melee strength bonus, while accuracy is still based on your ranged bonus. That makes it the only ranged weapon that wants melee strength gear. Unlike normal throwable darts that hit light ranged defence, the atlatl targets the enemy's standard ranged defence, like arrows do.

Because of this, end-game ranged gear like Masori is not best-in-slot here. Against low-defence enemies it performs better with high-strength items (amulet of strength, dragon boots); against high-defence enemies, ranged-accuracy tribrid pieces win out. Its strength scaling uses visible Strength boosts (potions count) but it does not benefit from melee prayers, while ranged prayers boost both its accuracy and damage. It also reads the melee bonuses from the slayer helmet and salve amulet.

How to get the Eclipse atlatl

The Eclipse atlatl is a possible reward from the Lunar Chest in Neypotzli, the reward chest for the Moons of Peril in Varlamore: Part One. The chest is opened after defeating at least one of the three Moons, and the atlatl drops at a rate of 1/224.

It is tradeable, so most players simply buy it on the Grand Exchange for around 1.5M rather than farming the Moons. You also need a steady supply of atlatl darts as ammunition, which the Lunar Chest hands out in bulk alongside the weapon. Browse more gear on the items list.

Eclipse special attack & set effect

The Eclipse atlatl has a special attack called Eclipse that costs 50% special attack energy and requires the full eclipse moon armour set to use. The attack is magic-based, performed at melee distance, and lands with a 50% accuracy bonus. Atlatl darts do not need to be equipped to fire it.

If the target is burning (from the eclipse set effect or a burning weapon), the special consumes the remaining burn damage, adding it to your max hit and half of it to your minimum hit, capped at 50. The matching eclipse moon armour set effect gives successful atlatl hits a 20% chance to inflict a Burn, dealing 10 burn damage over 24 seconds, stacking up to five times.

Eclipse atlatl FAQ

What level do you need for the Eclipse atlatl?

You need 75 Ranged, 50 Attack and 50 Strength to wield it. The Attack and Strength requirements were added on 27 March 2024; at release it needed only 75 Ranged.

How do you get the Eclipse atlatl?

It's a possible reward from the Lunar Chest in Neypotzli (the Moons of Peril reward chest in Varlamore: Part One) at a rate of 1/224. Since it's tradeable, most players just buy it on the Grand Exchange.

Why does the Eclipse atlatl use Strength instead of Ranged for damage?

It's a deliberate, unique mechanic. Its max hit is rolled from your melee strength bonus, while accuracy still uses your ranged bonus. This means it pairs with high-strength gear instead of normal best-in-slot ranged equipment.

What is the Eclipse atlatl's special attack?

Its special is called Eclipse, costing 50% energy and requiring the full eclipse moon armour set. It's a magic-based hit at melee range with a +50% accuracy bonus that consumes any remaining burn on the target to boost your max hit, capped at 50.

How much is the Eclipse atlatl worth?

It trades for roughly 1.5M on the Grand Exchange, with a buy limit of 15 every 4 hours. Check the live price and history in the chart above.

Is the Eclipse atlatl good?

It's strong and cheap against low to medium defence monsters, where its strength-scaling lets affordable gear out-damage pricier ranged kit. Against high-defence enemies its accuracy falls off and traditional ranged weapons pull ahead, so it's a situational tool rather than an all-round best-in-slot.

Update history
