Dragon axe

“A very powerful axe.”

The dragon axe is a member's woodcutting hatchet that doubles as a 60 Attack melee weapon. As a tool it chops 10% faster than a rune axe (requiring 61 Woodcutting to use), making it the second-best axe in the game behind the crystal axe and tied with the 3rd age axe. Its real draw is the Lumber Up special attack, which temporarily raises your Woodcutting level. It drops from the three Dagannoth Kings at 1/128 each and from the Tempoross and Wintertodt supply rewards, and sits at well under 100,000 coins on the Grand Exchange.

Equipment bonuses

As a weapon the dragon axe offers +38 slash and +32 crush attack with +42 strength, swinging on a 5-tick cycle (3.0 seconds). It needs 60 Attack to wield.

Those are battleaxe-class numbers — fine in a pinch but well behind a dragon scimitar for real combat; the dragon axe is carried for its woodcutting role, not its damage.

How to get the dragon axe

The dragon axe is a drop, not a smith — like all dragon equipment it cannot be made from raw materials with Smithing. There are two main ways to get one:

  • Dagannoth Kings — Dagannoth Rex, Supreme and Prime each drop it at 1/128. The Kings are found in the Waterbirth Island dungeon and are the classic, reliable farm for a dragon axe.
  • Tempoross — the Extra supply crate (Tempoross) and Reward Cart (Wintertodt) can each yield one at 1/10,000.

Once you have one, you can buy or sell it freely on the Grand Exchange, with a buy limit of 40 every 4 hours. Or just grab one off the GE outright — they are cheap.

The Lumber Up special attack

The dragon axe's special attack is Lumber Up, shared with the infernal, 3rd age and crystal axes. It consumes 100% of your special attack energy to temporarily boost your Woodcutting level by +3. The boost decays one level every 60 seconds, so it is gone after 3 minutes — pop it again as needed. Using the Preserve prayer extends the duration by 50%.

Two handy quirks: the spec lets you start chopping at 58 Woodcutting (three below the axe's normal 61 requirement, though you still need 60 Attack to wield it), and — like the dragon harpoon — activating it does not interrupt your gathering if you are already chopping. Note that any boost above level 99 is capped, so the spec only matters for clue-nest odds past 99.

Dragon axe FAQ

What level do you need for a dragon axe?

You need 60 Attack to wield it as a weapon and 61 Woodcutting to use it for chopping. Using the Lumber Up special attack, you can start chopping with it from 58 Woodcutting, but you still need the 60 Attack to equip it in the first place.

How do you get the dragon axe?

It drops from all three Dagannoth Kings (Rex, Supreme and Prime) at 1/128 each, and from the Tempoross Extra supply crate and Wintertodt Reward Cart at 1/10,000. Like all dragon gear it cannot be smithed. It is also tradeable, so you can simply buy one on the Grand Exchange.

What is the dragon axe's special attack?

It is called Lumber Up. It uses 100% special energy to boost your Woodcutting level by +3 for up to 3 minutes (the boost fades one level per minute). The Preserve prayer extends it by 50%, and it does not interrupt you if you are already chopping.

Is the dragon axe good for combat?

Not really. It gives +38 slash, +32 crush and +42 strength on a slow 5-tick (3.0s) swing — battleaxe-class stats. For actual fighting a dragon scimitar is far better. The dragon axe is wielded for woodcutting, not damage.

Is the dragon axe better than the rune axe?

Yes — it chops about 10% faster than a rune axe, making it the second-best axe in the game behind the crystal axe and tied with the 3rd age axe. It also has the Lumber Up special the rune axe lacks.

How much is a dragon axe worth?

It is one of the cheaper dragon items, well under 100,000 coins. For the exact current value and its price history, check the live price and history chart above.
