Dragon hunter wand

“A wand that is uniquely attuned to draconic creatures.”

The dragon hunter wand is a one-handed staff and wand requiring 65 Magic to wield, and the only magic dragonbane weapon in the game. Against draconic creatures it raises your Magic accuracy by 75% and damage by 40%, making it the go-to spellcasting tool for wyrms, wyverns, hydras and similar dragon-type targets. It attacks once every 5 ticks (3.0s) and can autocast both Standard and Ancient spells. The wand is a rare drop from the Hueycoatl at a 1/105 rate, and trades on the Grand Exchange for roughly 14M.

Equipment bonuses

The dragon hunter wand offers +16 Magic attack, a matching +16 Magic defence, and +10% Magic damage, attacking once every 5 ticks (3.0 seconds). Its real power is the dragonbane passive rather than the raw bonuses.

You only need 65 Magic to wield it, and as a wand it leaves your shield slot free for a tome or a defensive off-hand. The +16 magic attack is modest on paper, but the +75% accuracy and +40% damage against draconic enemies is what makes it the premier magic dragon-killing weapon.

How to get the dragon hunter wand

The dragon hunter wand is a rare drop from the Hueycoatl, the snake-like boss added in the Varlamore region. It is not bought from a shop or made with a recipe, so the only way to obtain one untraded is to fight the boss.

  • The Hueycoatl has a 1/18 chance per kill to roll its unique drop table (this chance is individual per player and scaled by your contribution to the kill).
  • When the unique table is rolled, the wand comes out at an effective rate of about 1/105.
  • Because it is fully tradeable, most players simply buy one on the Grand Exchange rather than grind the boss.

Its drop rate was doubled in the 25 June 2025 update, which also widened the unique-table chance, so the wand is more attainable now than at release.

How the dragonbane passive works

The dragon hunter wand is a dragonbane weapon, the magic counterpart to the dragon hunter crossbow (ranged) and dragon hunter lance (melee). Its passive effect boosts your Magic accuracy by 75% and Magic damage by 40% when fighting draconic creatures — this covers wyrms, wyverns, hydras and similar dragon-type monsters.

  • The bonus does not apply to Elvarg or to revenant dragons, despite their names.
  • It stacks multiplicatively with a Slayer helmet (i) on task and with Elite Void Knight equipment.
  • It does not stack with the imbued salve amulet (i) — you pick one or the other.

The wand can autocast spells from both the Standard and Ancient spellbooks, so it works for everything from Ice Barrage to standard combat spells against dragon-type Slayer tasks.

Is the dragon hunter wand worth it?

If you do a lot of magic-based dragon killing — wyrm, wyvern or hydra Slayer tasks in particular — the dragon hunter wand is the strongest tool available, since it is the only magic weapon with a dragonbane passive. The +75% accuracy and +40% damage against draconic targets far outweighs its modest +16 magic attack bonus.

For general magic training or bossing against non-draconic enemies, the passive does nothing, so a Tumeken's shadow or a powered staff will out-perform it. Treat the wand as a specialist dragon-slaying sidearm rather than an all-round magic weapon. At around 14M it is far cheaper than top-tier shadow alternatives, which makes it an easy buy if dragon-type Slayer is part of your routine. See the magic gear guide and the boss gear finder for where it fits your setup.
