Hallowfell

“This really fells my hallow.”

Hallowfell is a 75 Attack two-handed sword from the Mad Angel, the boss of Ardeaglais on the island of Wyrmscraig. Its passive is the reason to use it: when you hit your target, the sword can also hit up to two other nearby enemies for up to half your max hit each. That makes it a weapon for monsters that come in groups, such as melee Slayer tasks and the husks and parasites at Phosani's Nightmare.

How to get Hallowfell

There is one drop source, and the boss sits behind a quest on a Sailing island.

Ways to obtain it
Fallen From Grace — the quest on Wyrmscraig that unlocks the repeatable Mad Angel. It needs 62 Sailing, 60 Crafting, 53 Mining and 47 Runecraft, plus the quest Pandemonium.
Mad Angel — the boss in Ardeaglais, the cathedral on the south side of Wyrmscraig. Hallowfell is on its pre-roll drops at 1/127.
Grand Exchange — the sword is tradeable, with a buy limit of 100 every 4 hours.

After the quest, a necklace of passage or a slayer ring gets you back to the island, and the Ardeaglais teleport, which the Mad Angel also drops, takes you to the boss.

How the Hallowfell cleave works

When you hit your target, Hallowfell can also hit up to two more enemies, each for up to 50% of your max hit, rounded down. The extra hits check five tiles:

  • the three tiles in front of you;
  • the two tiles next to you.

Each extra hit rolls its own accuracy, and flat armour reduces every hitsplat. The extra hits must land on different enemies, so a large monster only ever takes one hit. They can reach over fences, but your main target still needs normal melee range.

In theory the cleave can double your damage, but only when every swing reaches three enemies: the full hit on your main target plus up to half on each of the other two. With one enemy in reach, there is no extra hit at all.

As a cleaving weapon it can be a cheaper, slower alternative to bursting: no runes or chinchompas, and melee experience instead of Magic. To get the most from it, attack the enemy with the most Hitpoints, gather monsters by tagging them with a fast thrown weapon, and consider a dwarf multicannon, whose accuracy benefits from the sword's high slash bonus. When 1x1 monsters are stacked on one tile in a multi-combat area, the special attack of a Dragon halberd or crystal halberd can hit up to 10 of them.

Places where monsters group up well for cleaving include twisted banshees, bloodvelds and dagannoth in the Catacombs of Kourend, 1x1 monsters such as jellies and dust devils, gryphons, elder custodian stalkers, maniacal monkeys in Kruk's Dungeon, the first wave of the Colosseum, and bandits and dark warriors in the Wilderness. For the rest of a Slayer setup, see Slayer gear.

Hallowfell vs the Scythe of Vitur

Both weapons can deal more than one hit per swing, but they work differently.

  • Area — Hallowfell checks five tiles, three in front and two next to you. The Scythe of Vitur reaches a 1x3 arc in front of you.
  • Large monsters — the scythe lands extra hits on one big target: two on a 2x2 monster, three on a 3x3 or larger one. Hallowfell's extra hits only go to other enemies, so a large boss takes one hit.
  • Extra-hit damage — on the scythe, the max hit halves with each follow-up hit, rounded down. Hallowfell's two extra hits are each capped at half your max hit.
  • Requirements and upkeep — the scythe needs 80 Attack and 90 Strength and is charged with blood runes and vials of blood. Hallowfell needs 75 Attack.

So one does not simply replace the other. The scythe does its best work against 3x3 and larger monsters, while Hallowfell pays off when separate enemies stand close to you. For single-target numbers, compare setups in the DPS calculator; the value of the cleave depends on how many enemies you actually line up.

Hallowfell FAQ

What level do you need to wield Hallowfell?
75 Attack, and that is the only skill requirement to wield it. You only need the quest Fallen From Grace if you want to fight the Mad Angel yourself.
How do you get Hallowfell?
It drops from the Mad Angel on Wyrmscraig at 1/127. It is also tradeable, so you can buy one on the Grand Exchange, with a buy limit of 100 every 4 hours.
How does the Hallowfell passive work?
After you hit your main target, up to two more different enemies can each take a hit of up to 50% of your max hit, rounded down. The extra hits look at five tiles: the three in front of you and the two next to you. Each extra hit rolls its own accuracy, and flat armour applies to every hitsplat.
Does Hallowfell hit large monsters more than once?
No. The extra hits only go to other, unique enemies, so a single big monster takes one hit per swing. The Scythe of Vitur works differently: it lands two or three hits on one large target.
Is Hallowfell better than the Scythe of Vitur?
They do different jobs. Hallowfell covers a wider area but only hits separate targets, while the scythe does its best work against 3x3 and larger monsters. The scythe also needs 80 Attack and 90 Strength, and it is much stronger once charged with blood runes and vials of blood.
Is Hallowfell a replacement for bursting on Slayer tasks?
It can be a cheaper but slower alternative to bursting. It uses no runes or chinchompas, and the experience goes to your melee skills instead of Magic.
Can Hallowfell be used in Death's Coffer?
Not at the moment: Death's Coffer will not accept Hallowfell.
Can Hallowfell hit enemies behind a fence?
Its extra hits can reach over fences. Your main target still needs to be in normal melee range.
