Mage's book

“The magical book of the Mage.”

The Mage's book is a shield-slot book that needs 60 Magic and no Defence level. It gives +15 Magic attack, +15 Magic defence and a 2% Magic damage bonus, which makes it an off-hand for low-Defence mages. You earn it in the Mage Training Arena, and it is tradeable.

Equipment bonuses

The book has three bonuses of note: +15 Magic attack and +15 Magic defence, plus +2% Magic damage. It has no melee or Ranged defence at all, which is the trade-off for needing no Defence level.

How to get the Mage's book

The book is a reward from the Mage Training Arena minigame, and it can also be bought because it is tradeable.

Ways to obtain it
Mage Training Arena — hand in pizazz points from all four rooms: 500 Telekinetic, 550 Alchemist, 6,000 Enchantment and 500 Graveyard.
Time needed — it takes about 5.3 hours on average when you play efficiently with the best spells.
Grand Exchange — the buy limit is 15 every 4 hours.

Earning the points yourself uses law, nature and cosmic runes for the spells in each room, so compare that rune cost with the Grand Exchange price.

Mage's book vs other Magic shields

The book ties the Ancient wyvern shield at +15 Magic attack, but the wyvern shield wants 70 Magic and 75 Defence plus Dragon Slayer I started, and carries negative melee and Ranged attack bonuses. The book has none of those requirements.

Above it sit the Arcane spirit shield (+20 Magic attack, 3% Magic damage, 75 Defence, 65 Magic and 70 Prayer to wield) and the fortified Elidinis' ward (+25 Magic attack, 5% Magic damage, 80 Magic, Defence and Prayer). Both also add real melee and Ranged defence the book lacks.

The Malediction ward needs 60 Defence and gives +12 Magic attack, +15 Magic defence, 2% Magic damage and real melee defence. The book has more Magic attack, the ward has the defence.

The Book of the dead also sits in the shield slot, but it gives only +6 Magic attack and +3 Prayer, and is needed to cast resurrection spells.

Is the Mage's book worth it?

Yes if you want +15 Magic attack without a Defence requirement. It suits combat pures for that reason. Once you can wear an Arcane spirit shield or better, those are the upgrade and the book becomes a stepping stone.
