Ranger boots

“Lightweight boots ideal for rangers.”

Ranger boots are a rare reward from medium Treasure Trails (clue scrolls) and need 40 Ranged to wear. They give +8 ranged attack with a light defensive spread, making them the third-best Ranged footwear by ranged attack bonus. They are not a power item — that +8 is modest — but they are one of the genuine status pieces in the game, fetching around 30M almost entirely on rarity and prestige. For raw endgame DPS, pegasian boots beat them, but ranger boots stay a prized flex worn by many mid-game rangers.

Equipment bonuses

Ranger boots offer +8 ranged attack and a small all-round defensive bonus — +2 stab, +3 slash, +4 crush and +2 magic defence — at a requirement of just 40 Ranged. They carry no ranged-strength bonus, so they sharpen your accuracy rather than your damage, and they take a -10 magic attack penalty like most Ranged gear.

The defining number is the +8 ranged attack: the third-highest of any boots, behind only avernic treads and pegasian boots — which is why they remain relevant despite their age and low requirement.

How to get Ranger boots

Ranger boots are a rare reward from medium Treasure Trails (medium clue scrolls). They cannot be bought from a shop or dropped by a monster — the only in-game source is opening medium clue caskets, though you can always buy a finished pair off the Grand Exchange.

The drop rate is 1/1,133 per reward slot. Each medium clue gives 3-5 reward slots, which works out to an effective rate of about 1/283.6 per casket. They are the most valuable single drop obtainable from medium clues, which is why they command such a high price.

Ranger boots are part of the ranger kit and can be stored in a treasure chest / costume room, so collectors can keep them without taking up bank space.

Are Ranger boots worth it?

It depends on what you want from them. As a combat upgrade, ranger boots are a minor one — +8 ranged attack with no ranged-strength bonus barely moves your DPS over cheaper alternatives. You are paying roughly 30M for accuracy, not power, so for pure efficiency they are hard to justify.

As a status and prestige piece, they are one of the most recognisable items a ranger can wear. Their price is almost entirely rarity and prestige — they have been a sought-after clue reward for two decades. For most mid-game rangers they are a flex worn alongside far stronger weapons and armour.

For true endgame Ranged the answer is pegasian boots, which are stronger and remain tradeable. But ranger boots are not really replaced by them — they are kept and shown off. If you are kitting out a ranged setup, check what actually moves your numbers with the Boss Gear Finder and browse the rest of the best-in-slot Ranged gear before spending on prestige.

Upgrading to pegasian boots

Ranger boots are the base item used to make pegasian boots, among the best Ranged footwear in the game. With 60 Runecraft and 60 Magic, you combine ranger boots with a pegasian crystal to create pegasian boots, which carry a much larger bonus and a ranged-strength stat, and stay tradeable.

The catch: this process cannot be reversed. Combining consumes the ranger boots entirely, so you are trading away the prestige piece for the stronger upgrade. Many players keep their ranger boots as a collectible and buy a separate pegasian crystal pair for actual bossing rather than sacrificing them.

Ranger boots FAQ

What level do you need to wear Ranger boots?

You need 40 Ranged to wear ranger boots. There is no other skill requirement to equip them.

How do you get Ranger boots in OSRS?

They are a rare reward from medium Treasure Trails (medium clue scrolls). There is no shop or monster drop — you either open them from medium clue caskets or buy a finished pair on the Grand Exchange.

What is the drop rate of Ranger boots?

The rate is 1/1,133 per reward slot. Because each medium clue gives 3-5 slots, the effective chance is roughly 1/283.6 per casket. They are the most valuable single drop from medium clues.

How much are Ranger boots worth?

Around 30M on the Grand Exchange, though the price moves with demand. Their value comes almost entirely from rarity and prestige rather than combat power — check the live GE price for the current figure.

Are Ranger boots still good?

For accuracy, yes — their +8 ranged attack is the third-highest of any boots. But they have no ranged-strength bonus, so they add little DPS. They are mainly worn as a prestige piece; for top-end Ranged power, pegasian boots are stronger.

What are the best Ranged boots in OSRS?

Pegasian boots are among the best Ranged footwear, with avernic treads slightly ahead on ranged attack. Ranger boots sit just below them by ranged attack bonus, making them the third-best Ranged boots overall and the strongest you can get without an expensive crystal upgrade.

Can you turn Ranger boots into pegasian boots?

Yes. With 60 Runecraft and 60 Magic you combine ranger boots with a pegasian crystal to make pegasian boots. This is irreversible — the ranger boots are consumed, so you cannot get them back afterwards.
