The Red salamander is a live Hunter creature you wield as a two-handed weapon. It attacks with slash, ranged or magic from melee distance, and it needs 60 Attack, 60 Ranged and 60 Magic. It is the third of the five salamanders and burns tarromin tar as ammo. It suits a mid-level account that wants to train several combat skills with one weapon.
Equipment bonuses
The salamander gives +37 slash attack, +47 ranged attack and +49 strength, with 0 for stab, crush and magic attack. The magic damage figure is hidden: it is 77, which drives the Blaze hit. It has no defensive bonuses.
Requires 60 Attack, 60 Ranged and 60 Magic · two-handed · attack speed 5t / 3.0s (4t on Flare) · attack range 1 · members. Its standout numbers are the +37 slash, +47 ranged and +49 strength shown above.

How to get the Red salamander
You catch it or you buy it. Either way you also need tar to fuel it.
Ammo: the salamander burns tarromin tar, made from tarromin and swamp tar at 39 Herblore. It is used up as you fight, in the same way as bolt racks.
Risk: because it is a live creature, an unprotected salamander runs away if you die.
How the Red salamander works
One weapon, three attack styles. Scorch uses slash and trains Strength, Flare uses ranged, and Blaze uses magic. Each style rolls its own accuracy from the matching attack bonus, so gear that lowers Ranged or Magic attack will hurt those styles. Experience is normal combat experience, with a smaller Magic amount per hit.
All three styles have to be used at melee range. This limits the point of the ranged and magic modes. It does still allow safespotting from behind fences and across diagonals.
Blaze uses a hidden magic damage figure of 77 for this salamander. At 60 Magic, the maximum hit is 13.
Is the Red salamander worth it?
It lets you train Strength, Ranged and Magic with one weapon, from the third rung of the salamander ladder (the first two need less Hunter and lower combat levels). If it runs away after a death, you buy or catch another.
It is not built for high damage: its +49 strength matches a rune longsword. The next two steps up are the black salamander and the Tecu salamander, the strongest of the group. Compare the red salamander with the weapons in melee gear before you commit to the Hunter and Herblore work.
