Tome of fire

“An ancient tome containing the secrets of fire magic.”

The Tome of Fire is an off-hand book from the Wintertodt reward cart that needs 50 Magic. When it holds pages it gives you unlimited fire runes and makes standard fire spells hit harder. For anyone who casts Fire Surge or Fire Wave, it removes fire runes from the cost and adds damage at the same time.

Equipment bonuses

The table is small: +8 magic attack and +8 magic defence, the same for the empty and charged book. The value of the tome is its effect, which needs pages: free fire runes and a damage boost to standard fire spells.

How to get the Tome of Fire

The tome comes from Wintertodt and is filled with pages.

Ways to obtain it
Wintertodt reward cart — a rare roll when you search the cart after scoring at least 500 points. Fighting the Wintertodt needs 50 Firemaking.
Grand Exchange — the empty tome is tradeable. A tome with pages in it is not.
Charge it — add burnt pages or searing pages. Each page gives 20 charges, and the book holds up to 1,000 pages. You cannot mix the two page types in one tome.

Ironmen and anyone with a spare can also trade an empty tome to Ignisia at the Wintertodt camp for 250 burnt pages.

What the Tome of Fire does

With at least one charge, the tome counts as an unlimited source of fire runes while equipped. Non-combat spells that need fire runes, such as High Level Alchemy, use no charges at all.

Standard-spellbook fire spells (Fire Strike, Bolt, Blast, Wave and Surge) deal 10% more damage against NPCs and 50% more against players, and each cast uses one charge. Other spells that need fire runes, such as Iban Blast or smoke spells, still get the free runes but no damage boost and use no charges.

Searing pages add one more effect: the minimum hit rises from 0 to 10% of the spell's max hit.

Is the Tome of Fire worth it?

If you cast standard fire spells, yes. The free fire runes alone save a lot over a long trip, and the damage boost is a bonus on top. If you mainly use other spellbooks, the tome gives no damage boost. It still supplies fire runes for spells such as smoke spells, so weigh that against the other shield-slot options on magic gear.

Note the 29 May 2024 change: the boost against NPCs dropped from 50% to 10% to make room for elemental weaknesses, so older guides overstate it. Use the DPS calculator to check it against your own setup.
