How to get the twisted buckler
The twisted buckler is obtained as a possible unique reward from the Chambers of Xeric, the raid released alongside it on 5 January 2017. It is not bought from a shop or made with a skill — it only drops from the raid's reward chest.
Chambers of Xeric uniques are awarded from the raid's reward roll rather than at a single fixed drop rate: the more points your team banks during a raid, the higher the chance of rolling a unique, and the twisted buckler is one of several items that can appear on that unique table. Because the chance scales with points and team size rather than being a flat 1/x rate, most players simply farm Chambers of Xeric runs over time or buy the buckler off the Grand Exchange for around 15M coins.
Is the twisted buckler worth it?
For ranged combat, the twisted buckler is the strongest shield-slot item available. Its +18 Ranged Attack and +10 Ranged Strength are unmatched by any other shield, so any setup that uses a one-handed ranged weapon — a crossbow such as the dragon hunter, Armadyl or Zaryte crossbow, or a thrown weapon — gains accuracy and damage by filling the off-hand with the buckler instead of leaving it empty.
It is not a universal pick, though. Two-handed ranged weapons like the twisted bow occupy both hands and cannot use a shield at all, so the buckler is irrelevant there. And on the defensive side its +26 Magic Defence is strong but not the best in slot — the dragonfire ward and spectral spirit shield beat it for pure magic tanking. Where it shines is the combination: top ranged offence plus solid all-round defence in a single shield, which is exactly what one-handed-crossbow bossing wants.
How the twisted buckler fits the ranged meta
When it launched in 2017 the twisted buckler offered no Ranged Strength at all — it was an accuracy-and-defence shield. The 30 June 2021 Equipment Rebalance changed that, raising its Ranged Strength from +0 to +10, which turned it from a niche accuracy off-hand into a genuine damage upgrade for one-handed ranged setups.
Today it sits as the off-hand of choice for crossbow-based ranged gear setups in raids and bossing. Pair it with a powerful one-handed crossbow and the buckler adds both the accuracy to land hits and the +10 Ranged Strength to push each hit harder. Its only real competition in the slot comes down to whether you can spare a hand at all — if your weapon is two-handed, the shield slot stays empty regardless of how good the buckler is.
