Nihil horn

“The horn of a proud nihil.”

The nihil horn is a rare drop from Nex, the Zarosian general fought in the God Wars Dungeon, and it is one of two items needed to upgrade an Armadyl crossbow into a Zaryte crossbow — the other being 250 nihil shards. Nex drops the horn at a rate of 1/258, and since it cannot be equipped or worn, its only purpose is as a tradeable upgrade component and collection log entry. See the live Grand Exchange price & history chart above — it is one of the most expensive single-item boss drops in Old School RuneScape.

How to get the nihil horn

The nihil horn has exactly one source: Nex, the Zarosian general fought in the God Wars Dungeon. She drops the horn at a rate of 1/258 per kill. There is no shop, quest reward, or alternate creation recipe — every nihil horn in the game has come from a Nex kill.

Because the drop rate is low, most players simply buy the horn on the Grand Exchange rather than farming it directly.

What the nihil horn is used for

The nihil horn exists for one purpose: upgrading an Armadyl crossbow into a Zaryte crossbow, a ranged weapon upgrade. The recipe combines the Armadyl crossbow itself, one nihil horn, and 250 nihil shards into the finished weapon.

Because the horn cannot be equipped, worn, or used in combat on its own, it has no purpose outside of this single upgrade recipe. Its only other role is as a tradeable Grand Exchange commodity and a collection log entry from Nex.

Is the nihil horn worth buying?

Since the nihil horn only has one use, whether it is "worth it" comes down to whether you want the Zaryte crossbow upgrade. Check the live price and history chart above for the current rate — demand for it tracks demand for the finished crossbow, since the two are bought together with 250 nihil shards.

For collection log hunters, the horn is also tracked as its own unique drop from Nex, so some players buy or farm it purely for log completion rather than the upgrade.
