Abyssal lantern

“A lantern containing power from the Abyss.”

The Abyssal lantern is a Runecrafting item for the shield slot, not a combat one. It has no combat bonuses. You light it with six logs and the type of log decides the effect: more runes per craft, better odds in Guardians of the Rift, or essence pouches that stop degrading. It comes from Guardians of the Rift, and you can also buy it with abyssal pearls.

Equipment bonuses

Every bonus on the lantern is 0, and the table above confirms it. Its value is the effect from the logs, set out in the sections below.

How to get the Abyssal lantern

The lantern is a Guardians of the Rift reward, and you can buy it with abyssal pearls.

Ways to obtain it
Rewards Guardian — you get it by searching the Rewards Guardian after Guardians of the Rift. The rate is 1/700 per search.
Temple Supplies shop — sold for 1,500 abyssal pearls. It was added there on 19 August 2026.
Apprentice Felix — also sells it for 1,500 abyssal pearls through dialogue.

The lantern is untradeable. If you destroy a lit one, you will have to get another from the Rewards Guardian.

What each log does

You light the lantern with six logs. Each type needs its own Firemaking level, and that level cannot be boosted. Coloured logs give the same effect as normal logs.

  • Normal logs (1 Firemaking) — +10% portal talisman chance. Minigame only.
  • Oak (15) — 5% chance to double contribution points, and a 5% higher point cap. Minigame only.
  • Willow (30) — +5% runes crafted. Works outside the minigame.
  • Maple (45) — +20% portal talisman chance. Minigame only.
  • Yew (60) — 10% chance to double contribution points, and a 10% higher point cap. Minigame only.
  • Blisterwood (62) — +20% blood runes crafted. Works outside the minigame.
  • Magic (75) — +10% runes crafted. Works outside the minigame.
  • Redwood (90) — essence pouches no longer degrade, and the oak and willow effects apply too. Works outside the minigame.

The rune bonuses count only the base runes from a craft. Scar extracts and blood essence are not included.

Is the Abyssal lantern worth it?

For anyone who does Runecrafting or Guardians of the Rift, it is a useful piece of kit. It costs a shield slot and nothing else, because the combat bonuses are 0. If you fight with it equipped you give up a real shield, so swap it in for Runecrafting.

Which log you can use depends on your Firemaking level. At 75 or higher, magic logs give +10% runes crafted, including outside the minigame. At 90, redwood logs stop essence pouches from degrading and also give the oak and willow effects (+5% runes), so you trade some extra runes for the pouch benefit. For combat shields, see the best in slot gear page, and browse other items in the item list.

Abyssal lantern FAQ

What does the Abyssal lantern do?
Once lit with six logs, it gives a Runecrafting benefit that depends on the log type. Some effects only apply inside Guardians of the Rift, and some also work when you craft runes elsewhere.
How do you get the Abyssal lantern?
From searching the Rewards Guardian after Guardians of the Rift. The rate is 1/700 per search. You can also buy one for 1,500 abyssal pearls from the Temple Supplies shop or from Apprentice Felix.
How do you light the Abyssal lantern?
Use six logs of one type on it, with a tinderbox in your inventory and the Firemaking level for that log. That Firemaking level cannot be boosted, and lighting it gives no Firemaking XP.
Which logs give extra runes with the Abyssal lantern?
Willow (30 Firemaking) gives +5% runes, magic (75) gives +10%, and blisterwood (62) gives +20% blood runes. Redwood (90) stops essence pouches from degrading and adds the oak and willow effects.
Does the Abyssal lantern work outside Guardians of the Rift?
Some versions do. Since the 19 August 2026 update, a lantern burning logs with an effect beyond the minigame works elsewhere. The willow, blisterwood, magic and redwood effects do. The normal, oak, maple and yew effects only help inside the minigame.
Can you change the logs on a lit Abyssal lantern?
Yes. Use the Extinguish option, then use six logs of another type on it. You can only have one lantern lit at a time.
Can the Abyssal lantern be used as a light source?
Yes. A lit lantern works as an equippable light source, and it also works as a lantern for lantern harpooning.
What happens to spare Abyssal lanterns?
Apprentice Felix will take extra lanterns in exchange for 100 abyssal pearls each.
