Dharok the Wretched Strategy Guide
Dharok the Wretched Guide
Dharok the Wretched is the second oldest of the six Barrows brothers and one of the six wights you face inside the Barrows crypts. His crypt sits in the north-east of the Barrows area, and he is a members-only encounter with a combat level of 115 and 100 Hitpoints. His examine text reads "A vengeful spirit corrupted by dark magic."
Dharok fights with melee equipment, which is exactly what makes him so dangerous up close and so easy to dispatch from range. Because he relies on melee gear, he is vulnerable to Magic attacks — and his magic defence is genuinely poor, with a magic defence bonus of -11 on the monster page. The trade-off the whole fight revolves around is his set effect: Wretched Strength, which raises his max hit by 1% for every Hitpoint he is missing. The lower his health, the harder he hits, which is why this is a fight you win with prayer discipline, not by trading blows.
Requirements & where to fight
Dharok is fought in his crypt in the north-east of the Barrows area, as one of the six brothers in the Barrows minigame. He is a members-only monster. There is no quest requirement listed on his page to enter his tomb, but Barrows is endgame-adjacent content best attempted once you have solid combat stats and reliable food.
He can also turn up as a Slayer task — his page lists him as assignable by Konar, Nieve and Duradel, and a kill awards 115 Slayer experience. The Slayer angle matters for one specific reward, covered in Notable drops below. If you are working toward Barrows or Slayer-bossing in general, our Slayer guide covers how tasks and assignment work.
Note that a second Dharok the Wretched appears as an NPC during Desert Treasure II at the Ancient Vault (added 26 July 2023). That is a separate quest encounter — this guide covers the original Barrows brother.
Recommended stats & gear
The meta style against Dharok is Magic. He uses melee equipment and is vulnerable to Magic, and as of the 29 May 2024 Project Rebalance update he carries a 50% elemental weakness to wind spells — so the fastest, cleanest kills lean on air/wind magic. Build around a magic attacker's kit: a strong spell or powered staff, magic damage and accuracy bonuses, and enough Defence-leaning or hybrid pieces to survive a stray melee hit while you set up your prayer. For the exact loadout tuned to your stats and budget, use our Boss Gear Finder above — try the Dharok loadout directly, and browse magic gear families there rather than guessing.
Prayer is not optional here — bring the levels and gear to keep Protect from Melee running, which is the single most important defensive tool in the fight.
Inventory & supplies
The supply list is short because the fight is short when done right:
- Runes or charges for your magic attack — wind spells are the recommended primary, so stock the air runes (or staff) to sustain them.
- Prayer restoration — Protect from Melee should be up at all times, so bring enough to refill if a kill drags on. His page warns that if you run out of Prayer points it is advisable to retreat, since he can hit high and a ring of life is very unlikely to activate.
- Food — even with prayer up, carry healing for the early hits before your overhead is active and as insurance against his low-HP spike.
Fight mechanics
Slash melee attack. Dharok attacks with Slash at an attack speed of 7. His base max hit is 29. The correct response is Protect from Melee — his page states it is strongly recommended to keep it active at all times, and that you should not rely on armour to tank him because the overhead prayer is the intended defence.
Wretched Strength (the low-HP scaling). His set effect increases his max hit by 1% for each Hitpoint he is missing, which is how he reaches a max hit of 57 at 1 Hitpoint remaining. This is the whole reason Protect from Melee is non-negotiable: as you whittle him down, an unblocked hit gets progressively more punishing. Note that, as of the 8 January 2025 update, Dharok no longer deals his max hit on every successful attack after his health has been reduced — but the scaling still means a clean overhead matters most when he is nearly dead.
Strategy / kill rotation
The plan is simple and consistent: flick on Protect from Melee, stay at range, and burn him down with magic.
- Primary method: Dharok is commonly defeated with the use of wind spells, which line up with his 50% wind weakness.
- Alternatives: a trident of the swamp / seas, Iban Blast, or Magic Dart can all be used instead if you do not want to cast wind spells.
- Freezing — handle with care: you can use Entangle or Ice spells to attack him from a distance, but his page advises against it: he is likely to unfreeze on low health and may then deal a large amount of damage thanks to Wretched Strength.
Keep the overhead prayer up the entire time, watch your Prayer points, and if you run dry, retreat rather than risk a 50+ hit while he is nearly dead.
Notable drops
On the monster page itself, the only drop listed for Dharok is the Brimstone key — a tertiary drop that is only awarded if he is killed on a Slayer task given by Konar quo Maten. That is the main reason to take him as a Konar assignment specifically.
Dharok is, of course, the namesake of Dharok the Wretched's equipment — the well-known melee set built around the same Wretched Strength low-HP effect. Those armour pieces come from Barrows reward chests rather than appearing on his monster drop table, so we do not quote set-piece rates here.
Common mistakes
- Tanking with armour instead of praying. His page is explicit that you should not rely on armour — Protect from Melee is the intended defence, and skipping it invites a low-HP spike of up to 57.
- Running out of Prayer mid-kill. If your points hit zero, the advice is to retreat, not to fight on — a ring of life is very unlikely to save you from his high hits.
- Freezing him down low. Entangle and Ice spells are tempting for safespotting, but he tends to unfreeze at low health and can then deal heavy damage. The page flags this as not recommended.
- Bringing melee. He has 100 Defence and is built to be fought from range; magic is the weakness, melee is a slog.
Dharok the Wretched Guide — FAQ
What prayer should I use against Dharok the Wretched?
Protect from Melee. His page strongly recommends keeping it active at all times, because he attacks with Slash melee and can hit up to 57 when he is nearly dead. Do not rely on armour instead.
Why does Dharok hit so hard at low health?
His set effect, Wretched Strength, increases his max hit by 1% for every Hitpoint he is missing. His normal max hit is 29, but it climbs to 57 at 1 Hitpoint remaining. As of 8 January 2025 he no longer deals that max hit on every successful attack after his health is reduced, but keeping Protect from Melee up is still essential.
What is the best way to kill Dharok?
Use Magic. He fights with melee gear and is vulnerable to Magic, with a 50% elemental weakness to wind spells since the May 2024 Project Rebalance. Wind spells are the common method; a trident of the swamp/seas, Iban Blast or Magic Dart also work.
Can I freeze Dharok and safespot him?
You can cast Entangle or Ice spells to attack from a distance, but his page advises against it — he is likely to unfreeze on low health and may then deal a large amount of damage. It is safer to keep Protect from Melee up and fight him directly with magic.
Does Dharok drop anything special on a Slayer task?
Yes — he can drop a Brimstone key as a tertiary drop, but only when killed on a Slayer task assigned by Konar quo Maten. He can be assigned by Konar, Nieve or Duradel, and each kill gives 115 Slayer experience.
