Sotetseg Guide

Sotetseg is the fourth encounter in the Theatre of Blood, the team raid in Ver Sinhaza. Lore-wise it is a dark beast that has been corrupted through Haemalchemy, though it does not count toward a dark beast Slayer task. You meet it as a raid room, not a standalone boss, so everything below assumes a Theatre of Blood team clearing the encounter together.

The room comes in three difficulty tiers. On Normal mode Sotetseg is combat level 995 with 4,000 hitpoints; Entry mode is level 336 with 2,240 hitpoints; and Hard mode is level 1,195 with 4,000 hitpoints. Hitpoints scale with party size, so a smaller team faces a proportionally smaller health pool. The fight is less about raw DPS and more about reacting to three things cleanly: the ricochet projectiles, the damage-split big ball, and the death maze. Get those right and the room is short.

Requirements & where to fight

Sotetseg lives inside the Theatre of Blood, so there is no quest gate and no Slayer requirement specific to it — you reach it by progressing through the raid. It is the fourth of the Theatre's encounters. The room is a 14×15 tiled arena, and Sotetseg stands immobile in the northern section while your team fights from the floor in front of it.

Because it is a team raid room, the practical requirement is the Theatre of Blood itself: a coordinated group, the supplies to survive several rooms, and the combat stats to clear them. Pick your difficulty by your team's experience — Entry mode for learning, Normal for the standard clear, Hard mode for the extra mechanics and rewards.

Recommended stats & gear

Sotetseg is most vulnerable to magic: its magic defence is far lower than its melee defence (a magic defence value of 30 versus 70 against stab, slash, and crush on Normal mode). That makes a magic setup the go-to style for the room, while ranged is the standard fallback that also keeps you at a safe distance from its melee.

For the exact best-in-slot items at your stats and budget, use our Boss Gear Finder above rather than copying a fixed list. In general you want your strongest accurate magic or ranged weapon, the matching offensive armour family, and prayer gear so you can flick the overhead prayers this fight demands. Sotetseg's defence can be lowered to a minimum of 100, so defence-reducing specs from a teammate speed up the kill.

Inventory & supplies

This is a raid room, so your inventory is whatever you carried into the Theatre of Blood: food, brews, restores, and your prayer supplies. The Sotetseg-specific drain on those supplies comes from three sources — chip damage if you misread a projectile, the big ball if your team fails to split it, and the maze if anyone steps on a wrong tile.

  • Prayer potions / restores — you flick overheads constantly here, so prayer is the resource most likely to run low.
  • Food / brews — to cover the big-ball hit and any maze mistakes.

See our Prayer guide if you want to drill the overhead-switching that this room rewards.

Fight mechanics

Ricochet projectiles. Sotetseg launches small red projectiles that you block with Protect from Magic. When one strikes a player it splits into two more that ricochet to other players — one grey, one red. The grey projectile is blocked with Protect from Missiles and the red one with Protect from Magic, the same as the original. Failing to protect against an attack blocks your protection prayers for 3 seconds; note that Retribution, Smite, and most importantly Redemption still work during that window. Up close these projectiles cannot be tick-eaten, but at a distance it is possible.

The big ball (damage split). After launching 10 projectiles, Sotetseg fires a slow-moving large red ball at one player. It can deal up to 188 damage (scaling with party size). If other players stand within a 3×3 area of the targeted player, the damage is dispersed among them — so the team stacks on the target to share the hit. The ball is tick-eatable. On Entry mode the ball deals about 15 damage solo and roughly 80 in a group; on Hard mode Sotetseg fires two balls at once.

The death maze. At 66.6% and 33.3% hitpoints, Sotetseg drags a single player into a shadow realm. That player must follow the red path along the tiled floor and enter the portal at the end to return, taking 1–3 chip damage every 7 ticks (4.2 seconds) while inside. Everyone in the arena must walk the same path, but they only see the transported player's current position as a red glow on the floor. Standing on a wrong tile deals 6.67% of your current hitpoints + 15 damage every tick (11 in Entry mode). A red vortex also chases the party and damages everyone if it catches up. On Hard mode all but one player is sent into the realm and the maze is divided among them, and the tornado appears earlier if the remaining player walks past the third row of tiles.

Melee. Sotetseg's attack styles are Crush and Magic at attack speed 5. On Normal and Hard mode its standard attacks can hit up to 45 with melee and 50 with ranged or magic (20 melee and 22 ranged/magic on Entry mode). Its melee is not tick-eatable, and unusually the hitsplat lands one tick after the attack — so staying out of melee range with a ranged or magic setup removes that attack entirely.

Strategy / kill rotation

The clean clear is a loop: prayer-flick the projectiles, stack for the ball, walk the maze, repeat. Keep Protect from Magic up for the red projectiles and switch to Protect from Missiles the instant a grey ricochet is heading at you — mis-praying just one chains into a 3-second prayer block, so accuracy beats speed.

Every 10 projectiles, regroup so the whole team is inside a 3×3 of the ball's target and eat the split hit together; a solo'd ball can deal up to 188 and is the most common way to lose a player here. When the maze fires at 66.6% and 33.3%, the arena team mirrors the glowing tiles exactly while the transported player rushes the portal. Lean on magic for the damage between mechanics, have a teammate drop Sotetseg's defence toward its 100 floor, and the room ends quickly.

Notable drops

Sotetseg's room-specific table is short. Every kill awards The shadow realm book (always, once — it stops dropping after you read it). Beyond that it drops a long bone at a rate of 1/400 and a curved bone at 1/5012.5. The Theatre of Blood's headline rewards come from the raid's completion chest rather than from Sotetseg itself.

Common mistakes

  • Solo'ing the big ball. Standing apart from the target instead of stacking means one player eats up to 188 instead of the team sharing it.
  • Mis-praying the ricochet. Leaving Protect from Magic up against a grey projectile (or vice versa) blocks all overheads for 3 seconds — remember Redemption still fires in that window.
  • Drifting off the maze path. A wrong tile costs 6.67% of current HP + 15 every tick, which stacks fast; copy the glowing tiles exactly and keep moving ahead of the vortex.
  • Sitting in melee range. The melee hit isn't tick-eatable and lands a tick late; fight from distance with magic or ranged to delete it.

Sotetseg Guide — FAQ

What is Sotetseg weak to?

Magic. Its magic defence is much lower than its melee defence (30 versus 70 against stab, slash, and crush on Normal mode), so a magic setup is the most effective. Ranged is the common alternative because it also keeps you out of melee range.

How do I survive the big red ball?

Stack with your team. After every 10 projectiles Sotetseg fires a large red ball at one player for up to 188 damage (scaling with party size). If teammates stand within a 3×3 of the target, the damage is split among everyone, so grouping up turns a lethal hit into a survivable one. The ball is also tick-eatable.

How does the maze work?

At 66.6% and 33.3% hitpoints one player is pulled into a shadow realm and must follow a red path to a portal. Everyone in the arena walks the same path but only sees the transported player's position as a glowing tile. A wrong tile deals 6.67% of your current HP + 15 per tick, and a vortex chases the party — so mirror the glow exactly and keep moving.

Does Sotetseg count for a dark beast Slayer task?

No. Sotetseg is a dark beast corrupted through Haemalchemy, but it does not count toward a dark beast Slayer task. It is purely a Theatre of Blood encounter.
