Vasa Nistirio Guide

Vasa Nistirio is one of the bosses encountered inside the Chambers of Xeric (CoX) raid. He is a former High Priest who, according to his examine text, was "fused with the rock and bound to the dark crystals" after a cavern collapsed on him while he investigated purple crystals of power. As a raid encounter, Vasa is not a standalone boss you walk up to on the world map — he is one of the possible combat rooms that can generate inside a Chambers of Xeric run, so reaching him requires entering the raid itself.

Vasa attacks with both Magic and Ranged, and his Hitpoints scale with the highest combat level in your party: a normal-mode Vasa has 300 HP, while in Challenge Mode that rises to 450 HP. He is best known for three things: a room-wide teleport-and-barrage special attack, a heavy boulder rock-throw, and a crystal-siphon heal that can undo your whole kill if you ignore it. This guide covers each of those mechanics and how a ranged-led team handles them.

Where you fight him & requirements

Vasa Nistirio only appears as a combat room inside the Chambers of Xeric. There is no Slayer requirement and no quest gate on Vasa himself — the gate is simply being able to enter and survive CoX. Because the raid scales its stats to the highest combat level in the party, the numbers on this page assume a maxed combat player; a lower-level team will see proportionally lower values.

When you enter the room, Vasa is initially just a pile of rocks. Approaching the pile animates him and starts the fight, and he immediately raises a purple flame at the entrance that damages any player who passes through it. The fight then opens with his special attack, so be ready before you commit.

Recommended stats, gear & style

Vasa is a ranged-meta encounter. His ranged defence is low relative to his melee and magic defence (a 2023 update even cut his ranged defence by 20 specifically to make the toxic blowpipe more consistent on him), so the team standard is to bring strong ranged gear and a fast weapon. Build a serious Ranged level and use our Boss Gear Finder above for an exact loadout — for ranged families think top-tier ranged weapons and accuracy/strength pieces rather than any single item, and browse our ranged gear page to see how the families fit together.

The one exception is the crystal phase: the Glowing crystals Vasa siphons are immune to ranged, take 66% less damage from magic, and strongly resist crush and slash, which leaves stab as the best damage type against them. Most teams keep a stab option in hand for that purpose. Note also that the Salve amulet does not work against Vasa, so it is not part of the setup. Keep your Prayer level high — this fight is a prayer-switching fight.

Inventory & supplies

This is a raid room, so your supplies come from the raid rather than a bank trip. If your team has Overloads (the CoX version), the wiki advises drinking one before entering the room so you are at full combat stats when the opening special lands. Beyond that, the priorities are simple: enough food and prayer restoration to survive the teleport barrage and the boulder pressure, and a stab weapon ready for the crystal. Solo players in particular may want to enter the room on lower health on purpose so the opening special does not kill them — more on that below.

Fight mechanics

The teleport special (crystal-glow barrage). Vasa can use this when he is at the centre of the room. He teleports everyone: half the team is flung to the edges and half is placed next to him (if you are soloing, you are always teleported to him). Players next to him are stunned and have their prayers disabled, then Vasa unleashes a magical barrage for massive damage. He is immune to attacks while charging it. The damage is calculated from the combined HP of the stunned players and then divided among everyone who takes the hit — if only one player is stunned, the hit is their current HP minus 5. Players thrown to the edges should run back to the centre and pray Protect from Magic; an unstunned player praying Magic takes no damage but still counts toward dividing the hit, which is why teams pile in. Have the lowest-HP teammate initiate the fight and stand next to Vasa so the barrage is calculated off a small HP pool.

The rock-throw (boulders). As his standard ranged attack, Vasa throws boulders at any player within 8 tiles of him — but not at players standing directly underneath him. Stand underneath and he instead applies a rapid stomp of up to 8 damage per tick. The boulders are fairly accurate and hit hard, so praying Protect from Missiles reduces both their accuracy and their strength.

The crystal siphon (the heal). After a teleport, Vasa activates one of the four crystals in the corners and walks to it. Once he reaches it he becomes invulnerable and siphons, healing 1% every 2 ticks and restoring (10% + 1) Defence. When he first reaches a glowing crystal a roughly 40-second (66- or 67-tick) timer begins, counting down only while a crystal is active. The crystal itself is immune to ranged, takes 66% less from magic, and resists crush and slash — so attack it with stab to break it before the heal completes. Since a 2023 update, Vasa only keeps the healing if he fully siphons the crystal, so destroying it in time negates the heal entirely. If you fail to break it, he deactivates it himself, returns to centre, and opens with another teleport special.

Strategy / kill rotation

The room is a loop: special → crystal → special → crystal. Open by having the lowest-HP player wake Vasa and stand next to him while the rest of the team crosses the entrance flame and prays Protect from Magic beside him to soak the opening barrage. The moment the magical attack resolves, switch to Protect from Missiles for the boulder phase, and pray Protect from Melee while running through Vasa to reposition. Pour ranged DPS into Vasa while he is attackable, then the instant he commits to a crystal, swap to your stab weapon and race the ~40-second timer to break the crystal before he heals. Repeat until he dies.

Solo is harder: you always get teleported onto Vasa and must eat the full barrage every time. The wiki suggests entering the room on lower health so the special cannot kill you, or using Vengeance to rebound the large hit back at him.

Notable drops

Vasa does not drop tradeable uniques of his own — like other CoX rooms, the real reward is the raid's overall loot table, rolled at the end of the run. On death he gives a fixed set of raid consumables every time: Nistirio's manifesto (a one-time lore book, no longer dropped once read), an Overload (+)(4), Endarkened juice (5), Xeric's aid (+)(4) (2), and Twisted (+)(4) (2). These restock your raid supplies for the rest of the run.

Common mistakes

  • Letting the wrong player initiate. The barrage scales with the stunned players' HP, so a high-HP player starting the room makes the opening hit far larger than it needs to be.
  • Ignoring the crystal. If you keep DPSing Vasa instead of the crystal, he siphons a full heal and you reset your progress — break the crystal with stab inside the timer.
  • Wrong damage type on the crystal. Ranged does nothing to the glowing crystal and magic is heavily resisted; bringing only a ranged setup leaves you unable to stop the heal.
  • Mispraying the phases. Magic for the barrage, Missiles for the boulders, Melee while running through him — staying on one prayer the whole fight gets you hit hard.
  • Walking through the entrance flame carelessly. The purple flame damages anyone who passes through it once Vasa is awake.

Vasa Nistirio Guide — FAQ

Where do I find Vasa Nistirio?

He is a combat room inside the Chambers of Xeric raid, not a standalone overworld boss. You only reach him by entering CoX, where his room may generate.

What style should I use against Vasa?

Vasa is a ranged-meta boss — his ranged defence is low and was even cut by 20 in 2023 to suit the toxic blowpipe. Use ranged on Vasa himself, but keep a stab weapon for the glowing crystals, which resist ranged, magic, crush, and slash.

How do I stop Vasa from healing?

After his teleport special he activates a corner crystal and siphons, healing 1% every 2 ticks. Attack the glowing crystal with stab and destroy it within the roughly 40-second timer. Since a 2023 update he only keeps the heal if he fully siphons, so breaking it in time negates the heal completely.

Why did the special attack hit so hard?

The barrage damage is based on the combined HP of the stunned players, then divided among everyone who takes the hit. Have your lowest-HP teammate initiate and have everyone else pile in praying Protect from Magic to split and reduce the damage.
