Best in slot gear for Vespula (current meta)
This setup is computed live from the same wiki-sourced combat stats and monster data that power our OSRS DPS calculator — so it tracks the current meta instead of going stale. Pick your combat style above and it ranks every viable weapon and armour piece by damage per second against Vespula, factoring in the boss's defences, size and any elemental weakness.

Vespula Strategy Guide
Vespula Guide
Vespula is one of the bosses encountered in the Chambers of Xeric, Old School RuneScape's first raid. The wiki describes her as a parasitic wasp from the Abyss that Xeric and his followers stumbled upon when attempting to open a new dimensional tear. Her examine text reads: "Queen of the Abyssal Vespine. Her lifeforce is sustained by her connection to the Abyss."
As a raid encounter room, Vespula has no fixed combat level (listed as N/A) and her stats scale to the party. With maxed combat stats she has 200 Hitpoints in a normal raid and 288 Hitpoints in Challenge Mode. She is a members-only boss released on 5 January 2017 alongside the Chambers of Xeric. Vespula is unusual among CoX bosses because the fight is far less about raw DPS and far more about protecting the lux grubs she shares the room with — mismanage them and the encounter spirals quickly.
Where you fight her
Vespula is not a standalone boss you travel to — she is one of the possible boss rooms inside the Chambers of Xeric raid. You only meet her as part of a raid run, so the requirement to fight her is simply having access to the Chambers of Xeric. Because she is a members boss inside scalable raid content, her stats (Hitpoints, attack and defence levels) are scaled to the party rather than being a fixed value, and the figures quoted in this guide are for a player with maxed combat stats.
Her examine note and lore tie her directly to the Abyss: her lifeforce is sustained by her connection to it, which is the whole reason the abyssal portal in the room matters — the portal, not Vespula's own health bar, is what you ultimately have to destroy.
Recommended style & gear
This guide will not list exact best-in-slot items — raid loadouts shift with team size and what else you have left in your inventory. Instead, anchor your choices on what the encounter actually punishes, then use our Boss Gear Finder above to build a tuned setup.
- Vespula has a 50% weakness to fire spells (added in the May 2024 Project Rebalance combat changes). If you bring magic, fire spells are her sharpest weakness — see our Magic guide and magic gear page for how to put that into practice.
- While she is flying she can only be harmed by magic, ranged or halberds — regular melee does not connect until she lands at 20%. Her melee defence is effectively zero (the wiki lists 0 stab, 0 slash and 0 crush defence; her magic defence is 70), so a long-reach halberd is extremely accurate against her even while she is airborne; see our melee gear page for the halberd families that matter.
- As of the 6 August 2025 combat tweaks, halberds can now do damage to Vespula while she is flying, which is useful for hitting her without standing directly underneath.
- Her own attacks are Ranged and typeless, so understand what's coming in via our Ranged guide even though your job is mostly grub-management rather than tanking her.
Inventory & supplies
The one fight-specific supply the encounter demands is Medivaemia blossoms — these are used to feed the lux grubs and restore their health, which is the core of keeping the room under control (covered in the mechanics section below).
Beyond that, treat Vespula like any raid room: bring whatever your wider Chambers of Xeric supply plan calls for. One thing the wiki makes clear you should not waste effort on is poison — Vespula is immune to both poison and venom (100% resistance to each), so weapons or specs that rely on poison damage do nothing to her.
Fight mechanics
When the encounter begins, Vespula spawns alongside four lux grubs and an abyssal portal. She is not aggressive when you enter, but retaliates with rapid Ranged attacks once attacked — these can inflict poison starting at 20 damage (the highest possible amount) while she simultaneously stings the grubs. Her max hits are 14 with Ranged, 8 with the Stomp, and 20 with the Sting; her attack speed is 3.
The lux grubs (protect them). As Vespula stings the grubs, their health depletes. If a grub's health is allowed to fully deplete, it transforms into a vespine soldier, which attacks with melee and inflicts poison starting at 15 damage. Worse, while alive these soldiers heal both Vespula and the abyssal portal — so letting grubs die actively prolongs the fight. You restore a grub's health by feeding it a Medivaemia blossom.
The 20% land window. Once you bring Vespula down to 20% of her health, she lands on the ground for around 20 seconds. During this window the abyssal portal can be safely attacked, and destroying the portal is what ends the encounter.
The enrage trap. If the portal is attacked while Vespula is still flying (i.e. not in the landed window), she enters an enraged state — flying rapidly back and forth in front of the portal and stinging anyone in melee range for 5–20 typeless damage. Anyone standing directly underneath her is instead stomped for 2–8 damage every tick. She stays enraged until the portal is no longer attacked, then resumes normal behaviour. (Trivia: her eyes turn red when enraged.)
Kill rotation
Putting the mechanics together gives a simple loop:
- Keep the grubs alive first. Watch all four lux grubs and feed Medivaemia blossoms before any of them hit zero — a dead grub becomes a vespine soldier that heals Vespula and the portal, so prevention is far cheaper than the cleanup.
- Damage Vespula down to 20%. While she is flying she can only be harmed with magic (fire spells exploit her 50% fire weakness), ranged, or a halberd (which stays accurate because her melee defence is zero) — regular melee will not connect yet. Keep hitting her until she drops to the 20% threshold and lands.
- Burst the portal only during the landed window. When she lands for ~20 seconds, switch all damage onto the abyssal portal. Destroying it ends the room.
- Never touch the portal while she's flying — that triggers the enrage state and the typeless sting/stomp damage for no benefit.
- The 29 November 2023 changes mean Vespula now guarantees an overload when you clear the room, on top of the other supplies listed below.
What she drops
Vespula does not drop combat uniques — her rewards are supplies that help the rest of your raid. From the wiki drop table, clearing the room always gives: Transdimensional notes (a one-time book, no longer dropped after reading it), two Xeric's aid (+)(4), one Revitalisation (+)(4), one Prayer enhance (+)(4), and one Overload (+)(4). Every one of these is an Always drop — there are no rare rolls on this table. Note that the guaranteed overload was specifically added in the 29 November 2023 Chambers of Xeric changes.
Common mistakes
- Letting grubs die. The single biggest error — a depleted grub becomes a vespine soldier that heals Vespula and the portal, undoing your damage. Feed Medivaemia blossoms early.
- Attacking the portal too soon. Hitting the portal while she's still flying enrages her and rains typeless sting/stomp damage on the team. Wait for the 20% land window.
- Trying to poison her. She is 100% resistant to poison and venom, so poison-based weapons and specs are wasted on her.
- Standing underneath her during enrage. If she does enrage, the stomp hits everyone directly beneath her every tick — step out from under her.
Vespula Guide — FAQ
How do I actually kill Vespula?
You don't kill her by emptying her health bar — you damage her to 20% of her health, at which point she lands for about 20 seconds, then you destroy the abyssal portal during that window. Destroying the portal ends the encounter.
Why do the lux grubs matter?
Vespula stings four lux grubs throughout the fight. If a grub's health fully depletes it becomes a vespine soldier that attacks with melee, poisons from 15, and heals both Vespula and the portal. You keep grubs alive by feeding them Medivaemia blossoms.
What is Vespula weak to?
She has a 50% weakness to fire spells (added in the May 2024 Project Rebalance). While she is flying she can only be harmed with magic, ranged or halberds — and because her stab, slash and crush melee defence are all 0, a halberd is very accurate against her; regular melee only works once she lands at 20%. She is immune to poison and venom.
What does Vespula drop?
Only supplies, all as guaranteed (Always) drops: Transdimensional notes (a one-time book), two Xeric's aid (+)(4), one Revitalisation (+)(4), one Prayer enhance (+)(4), and one Overload (+)(4). There are no rare uniques on her table.
