Crystal tool seed

“A seed to be sung into the best tools of the craft.”

The Crystal tool seed is the key component for upgrading a dragon axe, dragon felling axe, dragon harpoon or dragon pickaxe into its crystal version. You sing it into the tool at a singing bowl together with 120 crystal shards. The only drop source is Zalcano, and the other route is the Grand Exchange.

What the Crystal tool seed makes

One seed goes into one tool. At a singing bowl you combine the seed, the matching dragon tool and 120 crystal shards. The result is a crystal axe, crystal felling axe, crystal harpoon or crystal pickaxe.

What you need per tool
Levels — 76 Smithing and 76 Crafting. Each tool grants 6,000 experience in both skills.
Materials — 1 Crystal tool seed, the dragon version of the tool, and 120 crystal shards.
No levels? Conwenna or Reese can sing it for you. That costs 60 extra shards per tool, so 180 in total.

The finished tools start with 10,000 charges and lose one charge each time they give you an item. Each crystal shard adds 100 charges, up to a maximum of 20,000. Taking a crystal tool apart gives you back the dragon tool and the seed, but you lose all the shard charges.

A dangerous death in PvP turns a crystal tool back into its dragon version, which drops for the killer, and the charges are lost. Keep that in mind before you wear one in the Wilderness.

How to get a Crystal tool seed

The seed is a rare drop, and it is also tradeable.

Ways to obtain it
Zalcano — her drop rate is 39/8,000.
Grand Exchange — it is tradeable, with a buy limit of 100 every 4 hours.

The seed is only part of the cost. You also need the dragon tool and 120 shards (or 180 if an NPC sings it for you). Add up all three before you decide.

Is the Crystal tool seed worth it?

It depends on how much you gather. For the pickaxe, an uncharged crystal pickaxe mines like a dragon pickaxe, and a charged one is about a 3% Mining speed gain over a Dragon pickaxe, before you count waiting for ores to respawn or walking to new rocks. That is a small gain for a large cost, so the upgrade suits players who already spend many hours on one skill.

The crystal pickaxe needs Song of the Elves to make, and 71 Mining to use. To wield it you also need 50 Agility and 70 Attack. The dragon tools it replaces include the Dragon axe and the Dragon harpoon. Check the levels for the tool you want first.
