OSRS DPS Calculator — FAQ

How does this OSRS DPS calculator work?

It uses the standard Bitterkoekje DPS formulas — the same math the OSRS Wiki publishes for melee, ranged, and magic combat. For each attack the calculator computes:

  1. Effective level = floor(stat × prayer multiplier) + style bonus + 8 (+ Void bonus)
  2. Max hit = floor(0.5 + effective Strength × (str bonus + 64) / 640), then multiplied by gear-set bonuses (Slayer Helm, Salve, Inquisitor's, etc.)
  3. Hit chance from your accuracy roll vs. the target's defence roll
  4. DPS = (max hit ÷ 2) × hit chance ÷ weapon attack speed in seconds

Inputs come from your equipped items (stats stored in this site's item database) and the selected target NPC (defence levels and HP from the OSRS Wiki).

What's the difference between max hit and DPS?

Max hit is the largest single hit your setup can roll on a perfect-accuracy attack. DPS is your average damage per second — max hit × hit-chance × attack-speed.

A higher max hit doesn't always mean higher DPS. A weapon with a 4-tick attack speed and 30 max hit beats a 5-tick weapon with 35 max hit at most accuracy levels because of the higher attack rate. The Toxic Blowpipe and Twisted Bow win specifically on attack speed and accuracy scaling.

Does this calculator account for the Slayer Helmet (i)?

Yes. Tick the "On Slayer task" checkbox and equip an Imbued Slayer Helmet or Black Mask (i). Melee gets +16.67% (× 7/6) accuracy and damage. Ranged and magic get +15%.

It does not stack with the Salve amulet. Against undead the calculator uses the Salve bonus instead.

How accurate is this vs. in-game DPS?

It uses the same formulas the OSRS Wiki publishes for melee, ranged and magic, and it includes the effects that change the result most:

  • Twisted bow accuracy and damage scaling against the target’s Magic level
  • Scythe of vitur extra hits on larger targets (up to 3 hits, each at half the damage of the one before)
  • Slayer helmet (i) and Salve amulet bonuses, the Inquisitor’s set bonus on crush, and dragon hunter weapons against dragons
  • Bolt special effects such as Ruby bolt procs, averaged per shot

What it does not model yet is the damage of special attacks themselves. Real kills usually take longer than the time shown, because the figure assumes you never stop attacking.

Why is my DPS lower against this target than expected?

Three common causes:

  1. You picked the wrong attack bonus type. Slash on a target with high def_slash but low def_stab will under-perform. Check the Wiki's defence table for the target.
  2. The target has a stat that punishes your style. Pestilent Bloat has 600 magic defence; nothing magic touches it. Aviansie have 200+ Magic level which the Twisted Bow scales against (good thing) but a Trident is wasted (bad).
  3. You're wielding gear with negative offensive bonuses for that style. Armadyl on melee tasks gives a negative melee attack bonus — your accuracy drops if you wear it.
How do I improve my DPS for endgame OSRS bosses?

Priority order for any non-Ironman build:

  1. Imbued Slayer Helm — if your task list overlaps the boss
  2. BiS weapon for the style — Fang for stab, Scythe for slash on size 2+, Tumeken's Shadow for magic, Twisted Bow for high-magic targets
  3. Body + legs — Torva > Bandos > Fighter Torso for melee; Masori > Armadyl > Black D'hide for ranged
  4. Amulet — Salve (ei) on undead, Torture for melee, Anguish for ranged, Occult for magic
  5. Gloves and boots — Ferocious Gloves and Primordial Boots are the biggest per-GP DPS gains in the slot

Use the BiS Calculator to see the full ranked list per style.

Does the calculator work on mobile?

Yes — all panels stack vertically on smaller screens, a pinned bar keeps your live DPS in view while you edit gear, and tapping any equipment slot opens the item picker. Save the page to your home screen for offline reference; everything calculates client-side, no server round-trips.

When will special attack DPS be supported?

Not yet. The damage of special attacks such as Dragon claws, the Armadyl godsword and Voidwaker is not modelled.

What a special attack does to the target is supported: choose Dragon warhammer, Elder maul, Arclight or Accursed sceptre under Target defence reduced (after spec) and the DPS figures use the lowered stats. Magic DPS changes only with the Accursed sceptre, because it also lowers the target’s Magic. Twisted bow scaling, Scythe of vitur extra hits, Tumeken’s shadow’s magic bonus and dragon hunter weapons are already part of the normal DPS.
