Volatile orb

“An ancient magical orb, corrupted by darkness.”

The Volatile orb is a rare drop from The Nightmare. You use it on a Nightmare staff to make the Volatile Nightmare staff, which adds a hard-hitting special attack called Immolate. The orb itself does nothing on its own and cannot be worn, but it is tradeable, so it is also something you can buy.

How to get the Volatile orb

The orb is a boss drop, but it is tradeable.

Ways to obtain it
Grand Exchange — tradeable, buy limit 8 every 4 hours.
The Nightmare — the volatile orb drops at 1/960 per kill, improving to 1/548.7 in the largest parties.
Phosani's Nightmare — the volatile orb drops at 1/1,600.

The Nightmare rolls its orb table separately from its armour, mace and staff table. The orb table also contains the eldritch and harmonised orbs, each at the same rate, so one orb drop is not necessarily the one you want.

What the Volatile orb makes

You use the orb on a Nightmare staff to make the Volatile Nightmare staff. It needs 82 Magic and 50 Hitpoints to wield.

The staff's special attack is Immolate. It costs 55% special attack energy, has 50% extra accuracy, ignores runes, and treats the hit like a spell: the base max hit scales with your visible Magic level up to 58, and the staff's +15% magic damage is applied on top. The max hit is 66 for a 98+ Magic player with just the staff.

The staff still autocasts standard spells and Ancient Magicks. For wider magic setups, see magic gear.

Is the Volatile orb worth it?

It is worth it if you want a magic weapon with a big special attack and already have, or plan to get, 82 Magic. You need both the orb and a Nightmare staff, and both are tradeable.

Compare it with the other two orbs before you buy. The eldritch orb is aimed at Prayer restoration, and the harmonised orb at faster casting. The volatile orb is the damage-special option. Compare the orb's price with the base staff on the price tracker.

Volatile orb FAQ

What does the Volatile orb do?
You use it on a Nightmare staff to make the Volatile Nightmare staff. That staff gets a special attack, Immolate, that uses 55% special attack energy and does not use runes.
How do you get a Volatile orb?
It drops from The Nightmare at 1/960 per kill (up to 1/548.7 in the largest parties), and from Phosani's Nightmare at 1/1,600. You can also buy it on the Grand Exchange, with a buy limit of 8 every 4 hours.
What are the other Nightmare staff orbs?
The Eldritch orb adds a Prayer-restoring special attack, and the Harmonised orb removes the staff's Ancient Magicks autocast but speeds up casting from 5 ticks to 4.
What Magic level does the Volatile Nightmare staff need?
82 Magic and 50 Hitpoints. The plain Nightmare staff needs 72 Magic.
Can I take the Volatile orb back off the staff?
Yes. The upgraded staff can be reverted to its tradeable parts at any time. The upgraded staff itself is untradeable.
What happens to the staff if I die in the Wilderness?
Your killer receives both the staff and the orb.
How hard does the Volatile Nightmare staff special hit?
The base max hit depends on your visible Magic level, up to 58, then scaled by the staff's 15% magic damage bonus. At 98 Magic or higher with only the staff, the max hit is 66. Gear and prayers raise it from there.
Can you still use the staff's normal spells?
Yes. The Volatile Nightmare staff autocasts standard spells and Ancient Magicks, same as the base staff.
