Eldritch orb

“An ancient magical orb, corrupted by darkness.”

The eldritch orb is a rare drop from The Nightmare (1/960) that fuses with a nightmare staff to create the eldritch nightmare staff, unlocking the special attack Invocate — a heavy magic hit that restores 50% of the damage dealt as prayer points, capped at 120. Wielding the finished staff needs 82 Magic and 50 Hitpoints. The upgrade is fully reversible — see the live Grand Exchange price & history chart above for the orb's current value.

How to get the eldritch orb

The eldritch orb only comes from The Nightmare, dropped from her unique orb table at a base rate of 1/960 per kill, improving to roughly 1/548.7 with a full 80-player team since larger groups earn a chance at a second roll. It shares that table with the harmonised orb and volatile orb — all three roll at the identical rate, so which one drops is random. The harder solo fight, Phosani's Nightmare, also drops it, at a tougher 1/1,600.

There's no shop, reward, or crafting recipe around it — farming kills at The Nightmare is the only route in, though it's fully tradeable and noteable, so buying one on the Grand Exchange works just as well, up to the 8 per 4-hour buy limit.

What the eldritch orb does

Attaching the orb to a nightmare staff forges the eldritch nightmare staff, an untradeable upgrade that can be reverted back into its orb and staff at any time. The finished staff keeps the base staff's 15% magic damage bonus and can still autocast both standard spells and Ancient Magicks, but it also unlocks a special attack, Invocate: for 55% special attack energy it lands a heavy magic hit and restores 50% of the damage dealt as prayer points, up to a maximum of 120. Wielding it needs 82 Magic and 50 Hitpoints, making it one of the more specialised magic weapons — built around prayer-point sustain rather than raw DPS. If the staff is lost on death in the Wilderness, the killer receives both the staff and the orb.

Is the eldritch orb worth it?

The draw is Invocate's prayer restoration: special attack energy regenerates 10% every 30 seconds, so a full recharge allows one restoration roughly every 180 seconds, or every 90 seconds with a Lightbearer ring for double regen — enough for players with a solid prayer bonus to sustain protection prayers with little to no potions. It's a popular choice at the Inferno to cut down on inventory space, and during the fight against The Nightmare herself, Invocate does double damage to the totems. Since the combine is fully reversible, there's little downside to building one if a nightmare staff is already owned — compare it against the harmonised and volatile variants on the items directory, and check the live price and history chart above for the current cost of the orb itself.

Eldritch orb FAQ

What does the eldritch orb do?

It's a single-use upgrade material. Combining it with a nightmare staff forges the eldritch nightmare staff, unlocking the special attack Invocate, which restores prayer points equal to half the damage it deals.

How do you get an eldritch orb?

It's a rare unique drop from The Nightmare at a base rate of 1/960 (about 1/548.7 in a full party), or 1/1,600 from the harder solo fight, Phosani's Nightmare. It's also tradeable, so buying one on the Grand Exchange works too.

What level do you need for the eldritch nightmare staff?

Wielding the finished staff requires 82 Magic and 50 Hitpoints. The orb itself carries no level requirement to hold or trade.

How much is an eldritch orb worth?

Check the live price and history chart above for the current rate — its rarity, combined with limited daily trade volume, means prices can move quickly.

Can you undo the eldritch nightmare staff upgrade?

Yes — the combine is fully reversible, splitting the staff back into a tradeable nightmare staff and an eldritch orb at any time.

What's the difference between the eldritch, harmonised, and volatile orbs?

All three drop from The Nightmare's orb table at the same 1/960 rate and each forges a different upgraded nightmare staff. The eldritch orb's staff gains the prayer-restoring Invocate special attack, while the other two grant different effects. They aren't interchangeable, so you only need the one matching the staff you want.

Is the eldritch orb tradeable?

Yes — it's fully tradeable and noteable, with a Grand Exchange buy limit of 8 every 4 hours.

What is the eldritch nightmare staff's special attack?

Invocate costs 55% special attack energy, deals a heavy magic hit, and restores 50% of the damage dealt as prayer points, up to a cap of 120.
