Water battlestaff

“It's a slightly magical stick.”

The water battlestaff is an elemental staff that needs 30 Attack and 30 Magic to wield. Its big draw is a built-in unlimited supply of water runes plus the autocast option, so you never carry water runes for spells like Water Strike or Bind. It swings at 3.0 seconds (5 ticks) and is a cheap, members-only mage weapon usually bought for a few thousand coins on the Grand Exchange.

Equipment bonuses

The water battlestaff is built for magic, not melee. Its defining bonuses are +12 Magic Attack and +12 Magic Defence, with a respectable +28 Crush attack and +35 melee Strength if you ever poke something with it.

How to get the water battlestaff

The water battlestaff is most often bought straight off the Grand Exchange, since it is fully tradeable. If you would rather make your own, there are two routes:

  • Crafting (level 54): combine a water orb with a battlestaff for 100 Crafting experience. See the Crafting guide for getting to level 54.
  • Player-owned house: at a crystal ball in your POH study, you can convert an air, earth or fire battlestaff into a water battlestaff using 100 water runes.

It also shows up as a monster drop from various sources in the game.

Is the water battlestaff worth it?

For a low-level mage it is excellent value. The unlimited water runes alone save you a lot of money over time, and the autocast option lets you fire water spells and Bind/Snare without juggling runes. With only 30 Attack and 30 Magic needed, almost any account can equip one.

When you can afford it, the next step up is the mystic water staff. You upgrade a water battlestaff into one by paying Thormac 40,000 coins (cheaper once you have completed certain Kandarin Diaries), and it gives better melee and magic bonuses while keeping the unlimited water runes. Treat the water battlestaff as the budget version of that staff.
