The Battlestaff is the plain, unelemental magic staff that every elemental and mystic staff is built from. It requires 30 Attack and 30 Magic, allows autocast, and carries unusually good melee bonuses for a staff. On its own it has little long-term use — most players buy them in bulk as a crafting material, either to charge into elemental battlestaves or to sell on.

How to get a Battlestaff
Battlestaves are shop stock first and foremost, which is why the Varrock daily is worth doing.
Ways to obtain it
Zaff's Superior Staffs! (Varrock) — the main source. He stocks battlestaves once What Lies Below is complete, and the barrel in the north-west corner holds the discounted daily allowance from the Varrock Diary: 15 a day at easy, scaling up to 120 a day at elite.
Grand Exchange — the fastest route if you just want one, with a very large buy limit of 11,000 every 4 hours.
Fletching — cut one from Celastrus bark with a knife at 40 Fletching for 80 XP.
Other shops and drops — the Wizards' Guild magic store and Baba Yaga on Lunar Isle both stock them, and a range of monsters drop them.
Because the daily shop price is fixed and the Grand Exchange price is not, buying the diary allowance and selling it on is a long-running low-effort money maker.
Is the Battlestaff worth it?
As a weapon to keep, not really. It has no elemental effect, so it supplies no free runes, and anything you would cast with it you can cast with an elemental staff for the same +12 magic attack. Its usefulness runs out quickly.
As a material it is one of the most-traded items in the game. Every elemental battlestaff and every mystic staff starts life as one, so demand is constant. If you have the Varrock Diary done, the daily discounted stock is close to free money.
The one situation where the staff itself earns its slot is a hybrid setup: +32 strength and +25 crush are far higher than any basic elemental staff, so it can hit reasonably hard in melee while still autocasting. For real magic damage, look at a Master wand or a Smoke battlestaff instead.

Completing Varrock Diary task tiers lets you take extra discounted staves each day from the barrel in the north-west corner of Zaff's shop — 15 a day for the easy tier, rising with each further tier up to 120 a day. It is one of the better daily money-makers in the game.
Can you make a Battlestaff yourself?
Yes — 40 Fletching lets you cut one from Celastrus bark with a knife, for 80 Fletching experience. Celastrus bark comes from a celastrus tree grown in the Farming Guild.
How do you turn a Battlestaff into an elemental staff?
Cast the matching charge orb spell — Charge Air / Water / Earth / Fire Orb — on the right obelisk while carrying an unpowered orb, then use the charged orb on the staff. That gives you the elemental battlestaff of that type.
How do you get a Mystic staff from a Battlestaff?
Take an elemental battlestaff to Thormac after finishing Scorpion Catcher and pay 40,000 coins. Hard Kandarin Diary drops that to 30,000, and Elite Kandarin Diary to 20,000.
Is a Battlestaff good for training Magic?
It is fine as a starter — it autocasts standard spells and the +12 magic attack is the same as a basic elemental staff. It does not supply runes though, so an elemental staff or a Smoke battlestaff is a better long-term choice.
Is the Battlestaff free-to-play?
No. It is a members-only item, and so are the elemental and mystic staves made from it.
